Their plans to explore the Kingdom had started earlier than he had anticipated. And under very different circumstances too. He had feared the day would come yet he had hoped to never see it happen. Rick was dead and now they were forced to be on the run once more. Their destination required them to cross the seas again. Ashax, a province he had only read about in one of the many books his sire had owned. He had never seen it for himself. Normally he would feel excited and curious, but now he couldn’t take his mind off of the reason why they were here.

Because it hadn’t been their choice. On board the ship he had felt somewhat safe. It had only been him and Lexa, some other passengers and the crew of the boat. There was no way Isabella could sneak up on them there. But now they were in Sunfall he felt the urge to constantly look over his shoulder. She had tracked him down once. She was very capable of doing so again. As they walked down the streets in search of a tavern he glanced at Lexa from time to time. As usual she hadn’t shared any of her emotional or personal thoughts. She only did so when she was not in survival mode. He held back a sigh. She was strong, unbreakable, and he was a mess. If it hadn’t been for her he would have stopped trying from the moment he had found out his father had been killed. But now her survival instinct was rubbing off on him. If he could only find the same strength in his heart as she possessed, they would have been closer to an actual solution.

Long ago, Lexa had accepted that life wasn’t anything more than just surviving. Her own survival only mattered for as long as her people needed her, for her only purpose was to guide them to the future they deserved. For as long as Mother would place faith in her, she would lead them. But things changed the day she had met Mort and she had found that there was more in life to care for. Now, there was someone who threatened him. It brought back the woman she had once been, the warrior who wouldn’t stand down until the fight was over. If Isabella thought she stood any chance, Lexa would show her differently.

The Stormy Edge, or Sunfall to be more precise, was their next stop. Fleeing from a fight was nothing Lexa had ever done before and she refused to live that way. Luckily, Lexa had been taught to win the war, not the battle. To win this war, they would retreat and come up with a plan. Because this was the last time they were going to run. Dressed in black with various weapons attached to belts and scabbards, Lexa immediately attracted the attention of every guard - and commoner - in the city. Her expression was back to that stern look she had before, where the war was unfolding in front of her at any given time. She was ready to respond to anything - ready to kill if need be. But the moment she looked over to Mort, that expression softened a bit as she showed him the faintest of smiles.

They would get through this.

The price he had paid for the mistakes he had made was heavy. He had lost his brother, his father, his home. He had lost all he had except for one important person. The most important person in his life. He would not leave her side again. She was in her own protective mode right now, but so was he. He would not let anything happen to her. He would not let Isabella close. Even though he was not nearly as skilled as Lexa, and he knew she could take care of herself without his help, he had adapted a mindset of being protective too. He would let no one near her that could potentially cause her harm. He had seen her almost lose a battle once before and he would never let it get that far ever again.

Losing her was the scariest thought. Because she had been there after his brother had been killed, and she had supported him through his father’s death. If he lost her, then who would pick up the pieces of his heart? Who would carry them, protect them, until he was ready to make it whole again? With her he felt safe. He wanted to keep her safe too. Their gaze met as she caught him staring, but the faint smile curling around her lips told him she didn’t mind. He carefully reached out for her hand and entangled his fingers with hers loosely as they walked. ”I’m sorry you have to go through all this because of me”, He finally broke their silence. He had struggled with those guilty feelings for a while now. She deserved so much more than to be hunted down by a lunatic like Isabella.

Lexa wasn’t one to hold a grudge, did not easily grow angry. It had been the way she had been taught. After all, the Commander could not hold a grudge. She couldn’t be angry towards what someone had done, as she needed to be able to see it all from an outsider’s perspective. For the first time in her life, she failed to do that. Isabella raised an anger inside of him, a storm raging inside her chest. Lexa was sure that, if put face to face, she would not be able to stand down. She would not stop until the woman was dead. Because after all she had done, she deserved not to walk this earth any longer. She lived to torment anyone who was in her way.

The touch of his skin was cold, yet would always feel warm. Lexa looked forward again, listening to the apology he spoke. “It is not you who is hunting us,” she replied. “You did not do any of this,” she went on. To her, it made no sense to apologise for something you hadn’t done yourself. He couldn’t help that this woman was obsessed with his sire. And she was sure that, whatever God looked over the people outside of her own, did all of this for a reason. “I chose to stay by your side. I will not regret my decision,” she went on, finally looking at Mort again. “So let us find an end to this.” She softly squeezed his hand as she spoke. That was all they needed to think about now. A way to end this.

She was his strength. Words he had said to her that day they had gone up the mountain to visit the temple of her Mother. Ever since he had looked at her in his time of need. She was a warrior, a survivor. Above all she was worth fighting for. He did not have a particularly impressive set of skills but he knew that he would try. He would try until he could no more. He wanted to give her the opportunity to build a new life here because she made him feel alive like no other person ever could. For that to be possible they would have to stop Isabella once and for all.

Hence why they had come here. Even beyond death his father was still helping them. They only needed to find this contact he had spoken of long ago. Only in their last resort could they call upon him, in a final attempt. But he wanted to carry his own weight this time. He wanted to show Lexa she had not made a mistake by staying by his side. ”I will make sure you don’t regret it”, He said with a faint smile. He was not the violent type but Isabella had pushed him way too far. ”Apparently all we need to do is leave a note in a tomb on some graveyard”, He then said, pulling his hand through his hair and resting it on the nape of his neck. ”Sounds ominous, doesn’t it?” He chuckled, half-amused and half-nervous. What kind of man spent his nights at a graveyard waiting for people to leave notes?

There were many times where Mort did not make much sense to Lexa. She always put it on cultural differences, not minding it at all. It was curious to see the way he tried to come up with things, as well as his completely different approach to most things in life. He kept her off her toes, ready to face the world with anything other than a sword in hand. He was the reason she was able to step back and take a look at the world around them, seeing its beauty rather than its danger. Even if just for a moment, he could make her think about living, rather than surviving. Even now, as she looked up at him and, for a moment, was reminded of why she did all of this. He told her that he would make sure that she wouldn’t regret it, which simply caused her to nod. “So will I.

It did sound a bit ominous. “A graveyard?” she echoed. What a strange place to meet someone. How poetic. Find the dead to keep death away. She leaned into him a bit as they walked, letting out a soft sigh. She was tired. Tired of running and tired of being chased. It was time for them to rid the world of Isabella, so that they might live in peace. “It can’t be worse than the temple we visited,” she mused, remembering their adventure and running into the Guardian. That had been quite something. “If your sire knows them, I’m sure it will be alright,” she soothed him, hoping to calm his nerves. She didn’t share them. She was curious, but more than anything, ready to get this over with.

The instructions had sounded rather vague. He was unsure of what they would find at the end of this trip. It was the promise of help that had eventually convinced him to take the leap. Hope that they would find someone who was able to stop Isabella. Though he was a bit sceptical, for the first time ever. He couldn’t believe anyone out there was smarter or stronger than his father. He also realised well enough that he had to try. Failing was not an option. Not anymore. There was simply too much at stake. Because now he had to keep Lexa safe, among with the few other friends he had left.

As they were walking he repeated the instructions to her. He nodded when she echoed his words. A soft laugh escaped his chest by her mention of the temple. ”No more creepy stalkers”, He nodded in agreement. That.. Commander’s obsession with Lexa had been quite odd. He smiled softly as she leaned into him. Her next comment made him feel more at ease too. ”Yeah, they have to be good people”, He agreed. Rick always knew best. ”We have a few hours to spare until midnight. You want to get a room somewhere? Rest up a bit?” He asked her. The journey had been long and tiring, even for him. He couldn’t imagine how she was feeling.

No more creepy stalkers. Lexa hummed in amusement. “And even she wasn’t that bad in the end,” she told him. While the girl had been creepy for sure, neither of them had gotten seriously hurt. The girl had simply protected something that was incredibly important to her. Lexa was sure that, if anyone were to enter her home, she would put the fear of the Gods inside their bones and make them regret ever entering what was hers. Surely, she would be considered the creepy one in that case.

Mort agreed that those people had to be good, after which he offered to get a room somewhere and get some rest. Lexa nodded. “I could use that,” she admitted. “We got a long night ahead of us,” she hummed. If they were going to leave a note at some damn cemetery, she doubted that she would get any normal amount of sleep. As she was already running on reserves, it would soon break her up and she needed every bit of energy if she was going to tear Isabella apart.

The guardians living in the mountains had triggered his curiosity. So much so that he had visited their village. He had asked Lexa’s permission, of course, but in the end he had been quite adamant. He had wanted to figure it out by himself, because he knew her judgement had already been made. She did not see what he saw because she was blinded by her faith. He had learned a lot in that mountaintop village. Both about himself and the guardians inhabiting it. ”No, she wasn’t”, He therefore agreed. She had been scary as fuck, attacking him not once but twice, but eventually he had some comprehension of her motives.

His suggestion to rest up first was met with a nod. ”Say, would you be able to sleep in a cemetery? If it wasn’t for us leaving a note so someone will probably show up. If it was just a quiet graveyard in the middle of nowhere?” He curiously asked her. She wasn’t the type to scare easily, but he wondered if she wouldn’t out of principles or something. He then spotted a sign saying the building on their left was an inn. He gently pulled her into the direction of the door. That was faster than he had imagined it to go. Life had been difficult lately, he was glad this seemed to go smoothly for once. He sure wouldn't complain.

Yes, the woman had been an experience to deal with. Lexa, however, firmly believed that she had wanted nothing but to protect what she believed in. This was all a warrior could ever do. Lexa might be the hero in her own story, she was the villain in another. This was true for everyone, for every cause and for every hero. To sit down and not fight was never an option, and thus one was to accept this truth. To know that the books of history might write you as a villain or hero, depending on which side won the war.

Leave it up to Mort to ask the strange questions. He asked her if she would be able to sleep in a cemetery if they were not waiting for someone. This was a question she did not need to think about. “No,” she answered. To her, it was strange to bury the dead. “The dead should be burned,” she explained. The thought of a cemetery made her terribly uncomfortable. The only people whose body would be preserved, as happened in temples, were those who had created a movement. Their body needed to stay on earth until their goal had been achieved, so their spirit could see and finally be put to rest.

For a moment he almost forgot what they were about to do. He just walked beside her towards a place to get some rest, having a normal conversation. A Mort-level kind of normal conversation, that was. He even managed to look past the obvious warrior-mode expression and signs she was radiating. By now he was used to seeing her like that. In the beginning it had scared him, slightly; but it had also been what had attracted him to her in the first place. She was strong, a guiding light, always pulling him back to shore when he threatened to get lost out at sea. Beneath that rough appearance a kind heart was hiding. She had her own opinions, her own point of view, but aside from all that she cared deeply about the ones she had sworn to protect.

It was because of the safe feeling she provided he felt comfortable enough to put the trouble in the back of his mind for a bit. By asking questions he got to learn more about her, and there was nothing else he loved more than getting to know her better. He nodded at her answer. ”Oh, I see”, He said. ”Well then let’s make sure you get some proper rest before we go, yeah?” He smiled at her, after which he surprisingly took the lead and walked into the tavern first.

The dynamics of their relationship, and his personality for that matter, did not at all explain why he suddenly put himself in that role. But he did, and he hoped she would accept it. He felt like a part of him had changed. He wanted to take care of her as well, not always be the one having to be taken care of. The universe knew he would fail, hard and often, but he would learn eventually. So far, he managed to get them a room for the night, even though they would spend it at the cemetery later. After all the agreements were made they were handed a key to the room. He thanked the innkeeper and went upstairs. Once in the room he looked around curiously. ”In the seconds I manage to ignore the trouble we are in I could almost think we are on a vacation”, He softly smiled at her. One day he hoped they would actually be able to enjoy travelling together, like they had planned before.

Sometimes, Lexa found herself wondering what Arawn would think of her situation. To see the man by her side, who was anything but what people would have expected her to fall for. Yet, Lexa had not been all that surprised. It was never physical strength that appealed to her, as one could train to become strong. Anyone could, if they just put their mind to it. A kind heart, however, could not be created. A heart as pure as his, no matter how many would ever try to taint it, was so unique in a world so cruel. She found herself mesmerized by it, wondering how someone so pure could exist in the same world that had forced her to kill her own friends. The world truly worked in mysterious ways and he was there to remind her that it wasn’t all bad.

As a girl, she was taught not to fear death. Instead, Lexa had accepted it as part of life. However, when dead, the soul lived on unless burned and sent to the heavens. If a body was buried, the soul was trapped forever. A cemetery, as such, made her slightly uncomfortable, knowing so many souls were trapped in the very floor underneath her feet. As such, she would not be able to rest in a place like that and Mort suggested to get some rest before they would head out, to which she gladly nodded. That sounded good.

While one would not see it, Lexa always paid attention to her surroundings. She did not look around at every movement, but instead paid attention to the sounds and other people. If someone was following them, she would know. But when Mort entered the tavern first, she threw one last look over her shoulder, to see if there was any face she would have seen back at the docks as well. When she decided there was none, she followed Mort, to listen in silence as he arranged a room for them.

After following Mort upstairs, she looked into the room and rested her head against his shoulder, letting out a deep sigh of relief as she could finally feel her muscles relax, away from the people. Only when she was with him and him alone, could she enter a state of rest. She knew he would notice if anyone would come closer. He would keep her safe and that was a feeling she had never known before. “Soon,” she whispered as she closed her eyes for a moment. When she opened them again, she looked at Mort with aspiration in her eyes. “Soon all of this will be over.” And she truly believed this to be true. Isabella was not going to be a part in their lives for much longer.
