THE GLADE

The Glade is mostly a wetland area in between the Highlands and the Crownlands. There are many rivers and lakes to be found here, along marshes and swamps. Sapphire Keep, the capital city, lies in the centre of the largest lake in Avalance, which only proves how much the people here know of the waters and how to use them properly to their advantage. The winters here can be fairly cold, while the summers are mild except for the southern parts of the region. The Glade can be treacherous terrain to any who is not accustomed to it.

Within these lush but marshy lands, many creatures have adapted to the harsh life in the wetlands. When travelling through the Glade you'll find bears, snakes, bobcats, lynxes, foxes and many other hunters who thrive in these conditions. They hunt the deer, elk, boar, minks and beavers. If lucky you may also spot the white pelt of a unicorn in the shadows, as a few live within the deep forests of the Glade. Below the water surface a whole other world exists, consisting of newts, fish, turtles, salamanders and other amphibians. At the seashore many have spotted sirens and when going out to the ocean there are sea serpents, dolphins and sharks circling people's ships.
The flora of the Glade thrives just as much as the fauna, having adapted to the wet conditions. Cyprus trees live in freshwater swamps. Freshwater marshes contain grasses, wildflowers and shrubs. Many plants grow under water or on the top of the water, helping the habitat to hold on to water, which keeps local rivers and streams from flooding.

The Glade was quickly inhabited after the snow moved away, leaving room for farms and villages. Those who built there, never left. The same villages and families have stayed here ever since the very beginning. Only the Big House has ever changed; a change they weren’t too keen upon at first. The people in the Glade aren’t fond of change or outsiders, much rather keeping to themselves. This shows in how their capital city is built; surrounded by water, with the ability of locking themselves away from the outside world completely. To each other, the people in the Glade are friendly, but a new face will have to earn their trust and show that they are willing to earn the respect, rather than get it for free.

The old Great House of the Glade lost its rightful heir to the last war, leaving this area for the taking. While many showed their interest to rule this lands in the name of the King, the King had other plans. His most loyal Knight, a friend even, had lost his eye in the war, being unable to function as the King's Guard. So, he named him Lord of the Glade. And from there on, this family has had an amazing relationship with the king, ruling their province in times of peace.
