The clicking sound of her high heels on the clean stone floor seemed to be recognized, as Mathieu Deveaux spread his arms in enthusiasm, to greet his daughter. ‘Élise, darling, you are well on time as always!’ he told her enthusiastically, moving past her to put some more kinds of food on the table.
A brow was raised by the brunette as she eyed the courses that were set upon the large dinner table. A thick soup, made of different kind of thick plants found in the Highlands. There was a plate filled with what looked like deer meat and different kinds of sauces spread around them. The salads were in the many; some covered with nuts, others holding different kinds of fruits. An expensive meal. And while she realised this was for her dear brother’s nameday, she couldn’t help but feel that it was… a bit excessive.

She took place at the dinner table, moving her hand through her thick brown hair. ‘Darling! Delphine! Élise is here,’ her father announced and it didn’t take long for her mother to arrive too. Jules had always looked like their father. They had this eyecolor that she could not quite describe. Many women had fallen for her father when he was younger, though he had only seen one. Her mother was a graceful woman, with thick brown hair like Élise had. Her eyes were a pale blue and it was of no surprise that the men fell at her feet. It was very clear that Jules did not look like her, though Élise did show quite some resemblance.
‘Élise!’ The woman walked up to her daughter, her feet moving as gracefully as if it was part of a dance, before she pressed a kiss on the forehead of her daughter, taking place on the opposite side of the table. That was… unusual. Usually, she sat next to her mother, while her father sat next to Jules. This time, her father took place next to her.

Today was going to be a strange day.

Finally. After several weeks spent on the back of a horse, sleeping in taverns and having his bed warmed by the local fair maiden, he had reached his ancestral home. The building looked the same as he had expected it to. An image formed by years of memories about the place he had grown up at. How he had climbed the tree several meters to the right of him, against the wall. His mother had begged him to come down, but Jules had enjoyed it too much. Testing the strength of the branches of the tree, to make sure he could climb just that little bit higher. How he had chased the prized hunting dog of one of the associates of his father, until the poor animal had enough of the young boy endlessly pulling his ears, and had jumped into the arms of his owner, causing the man to ungraciously fall backward.

Jules, second son of the Head of the House, was home.

Servants looked up at him in confusion, staring at the young man sitting in the saddle of a large, black stallion. It had been more than a year since he had been at the property owned by Mathieu Deveaux. He had changed, quite a lot. So much so that no one recognised him right away. His signature smirk tugged at the corners of his mouth. Perhaps it was the way he smirked, or the smugness that radiated off of his face; but suddenly they all knew who had appeared on their doorstep. The life of the party, the young man who would celebrate his eighteenth birthday.

A few days had passed since he had arrived. He had kept to himself most of the time, knowing that he would probably only see his mother and older sister at the dinner organised in honour of his name-day. When the moment arrived, Jules had made his way down to the hall where his family would gather to celebrate. He was guided inside by a servant, a wide smile on his face as he made eye-contact with his relatives for the first time in a long while. His father was the first to get up and walk up to him to greet him. ”My son. I hope your day has been entertaining”, He said. ”Do not worry, father. I have been enjoying my day”, He replied with a nod. His mother greeted him next. ”Look at you, how you have changed”, She uttered perplexed. ”It is good to see you, mother”, He replied after embracing the woman in a warm hug.

Next up was his sister. She had changed as well, apparently. He doubted he would recognise her straight away if he had met her in the streets at random. He grabbed the hand of his older sibling in between his both, squeezing it affectionately. ”Élise. I have missed you”, He said with a bow of his head. He felt sentimental about the fact that his family had gathered here today, to be grateful for his existence.

To the eyes of a stranger, this family would be naught but shere normalities. A happy couple with two children. While the children did not look alike, they both looked like one of their parents, fitting in perfectly. They were well fed and while there, of course, were fights and other shenanigans, they did not seem out of the ordinary.

Then, there was the part that even her mother did not know of. How, in order to achieve their goals, sacrifices had to be made. Élise had turned the castle in the mountains into her home and did things there, which her mother should never find out. For she would not be able to understand, would not see that sacrifices were to be made for the greater good. She probably believed that those parasites had a soul, still. It was sad, but she would rather have her mother live in oblivion. That way, they could all be happy. And one day, Élise would rid the world of the pest that was known as the Undying.

When her eyes fell upon Jules, she could feel her heart stop. His beautiful skin; ruined with the dark ink of the poor. The word that was written on his eyebrow was barely legible and the tattoo on his neck looked like someone had puked on it. Why did the eye have wings? What kind of drug had they been on when that was designed? All she could do in this moment, was gasp. Yet, her parents did not seem to mind.

Jules, you look like a zebra.

Her comment was followed by his laughter, chiming through the room. ”A zebra? Haven’t heard that one before”, He chuckled once he was done. He could see why though. The resemblance with the stripes on his throat, it was uncanny. His skin wasn’t nearly as covered as that of a zebra, who was half white and half black. Maybe one day. He did not plan to stop collecting ink any time soon. Over the years, it had become a part of his lifestyle. Hanging around with pirates sure had had some bad influences on the young teen, but of course he was blind to those. To him, it was all an opportunity at becoming better in his skills. An opportunity to train his talents.

The tattoos were not the only sort of ritual he had picked up. His faith was another major aspect of his life now, but he had not told his relatives about that yet.

Perhaps for the better. It wouldn’t make sense to them anyway. Only those who had been at sea for a long time, could understand the motives of a believer of the Drowned God. Nowhere else than out at sea could you feel the presence of the powerful deity he worshipped. For those who had lived in the mountains for most of their life, it would sound like he was crazy. So he wisely kept his mouth shut about the matter. When his father urged him to sit down, his amber eyes found the empty chair next to his mother. A slight frown appeared, but he did not ask any questions.

Once he sat down, servants flooded the room again and filled their plates and glasses, before retreating so they could start their meal. He waited politely for his father to take his glass. At least he still remembered basic standards when it came to dinners like this one. As expected, Mathieu picked up his glass to give a short speech. He wondered if he was going to mention anything special, as turning eighteen was seen as reaching adulthood after all.

How could he do what he had done? Never would the brunette understand his decision to ruin his god given skin with the filth he called tattoos. She had nothing against tattoos, but what he did seemed like anything but art. It was no way of expression, just… as if he tried to show off, with as much skin ruined as humanly possible. It was vile and it was against the will of the Goddess of the Sun, she was sure of it. There was no way the bright-shining sun would ever want one to encloud their skin in darkness like he did.
Jules, however, laughed. He did not seem to take it seriously like she did, causing her to frown. Maybe they could cut them away still. The one on his neck not. Would it be able to burn it off? Perhaps. She had never tried and couldn’t say that she was fully aware of how tattooing worked. It was worth a shot.

When her father lifted his glass, the table fell silent. ‘Enough bickering, Élise,’ the man told her, smiling as he looked at his daughter. He knew they weren’t bickering. All things considered, Jules and Élise got along well. While they had their moments (like every pair of siblings does), they were there for each other when needed. And while she would punch him in the face when he was annoying, she would tear open anyone else who tried to do the same.

‘I am so glad to be with my family on this day,’ the man smiled softly. ‘It is rare for us to gather like this. Your mother and I wish we got to see you more often,’ he said, his eyes moving from Élise to Jules. Élise couldn’t help but nod, knowing that she had been absent for far too long. But, work was pressing. She spent days, if not weeks, locked up in that tower, reading books until she could no longer see.

‘Today, we celebrate the 18th nameday of Jules Winter.’

His sister was exactly the same in one regard. Her strong opinions, and the way she voiced those, had remained as he remembered it. It was a tactical insult. She hid it behind innocent words, but he picked up on it anyway. He just didn’t let it touch him. She could judge all she wanted. Perhaps it was for the better that he wouldn’t mention the fact that he had strayed away from the faith he had been raised with. He honestly didn’t want to find out what she would have to say about that. For now, he wouldn’t let her negative attitude ruin the whole mood though. This was the first time in a long while they were all gathered together, and how much he loved being out in the world by himself, he still loved his family dearly. He would always be glad to come back home.

Apparently his father felt the same about his family being together for once, as it was a rare occasion now. It was a pity, but at the same time logical development. Children grew up, went their separate ways. Looking to find a place in this world, a sense of purpose, belonging. He had found his at sea. Just like his sister, he nodded as well. When his father was done talking, he expected him to open up the meal, but he didn’t. Instead, his mother surprised him by scraping her throat softly, to draw his attention. ”Your father and I wanted to make this day special. We have made arrangements and..”, She paused and picked up a piece of parchment from the table. ”You have always been my son, now also in name”, She said, her eyes twinkling proudly as she handed him the paper.

“From this day until your last day, you are Jules Deveaux, son of Mathieu Deveaux and Delphine Lenier.”

It didn’t happen often that he was speechless. But in that moment, he sure was. ”I.. I don’t know what to say.. A thank you doesn’t cut it”, He said, looking from his mother to his father and back to the Royal Decree. ”I am blessed to be born into this family”, He then smiled. His father lifted his glass once more, after which he took a sip. The sign that they could start eating and drinking themselves now.

The night had progressed, with more food and drinks, but eventually his parents had excused themselves. It was getting late, and they were tired. After wishing them a good night, he was left with Élise. His amber gaze trailed her features. ”Do tell, what have you been up to lately?” He asked. He took a sip of his wine while he kept observing her reaction. He knew he wasn’t the only one keeping secrets from his parents after all.

Never would she have expected her parents to do what they did, yet they had. The words of her mother caused a smile to appear on Élise face and her earlier insults for her brother, seemed to be forgotten in the sweetness of this moment. Never had she cared much for the fact that he was not a fullblood brother of hers. Where they fought like real siblings, they had also always cared for each other that way. He carried a different surname, but he carried their father’s blood and her mother’s love.

Yet, today that would change. The paper he had said enough. A soft smile around her lips, only sweetened the words that she was about to speak. “And we are glad to have you, little brother.” Her eyes found her mom, her dad, and she knew that this would not change a thing. Not for them; but for Jules it could. No longer did he carry the name of a bastard. It might even be that this house would be his upon their father’s death. After all - Élise was a woman. He was the rightful heir now. But, while she loved her father dearly, that was not something the man had thought of. He expected her to marry a Lord, preferably one of a bigger House. That was the place of a woman in a man’s world.

The evening went by slow, yet too quick to comprehend quite well. They shared a meal, talked, laughed and spent the time together, like a family would. She loved days like these, where she didn’t feel like the weight of her life’s work rested on her shoulders. Where she could hang with her family, forgetting about the time passing by. It was a welcome change of pace, though one that she could not get used to. Because nothing lasted for long, that much she knew.

And when their parents left the table, she was left with Jules alone. A smile pulled at her lip as she shrugged softly. “I have been… working on a project,” she told him. The little shimmer in her eyes spoke more than a thousand words ever could. “Elayne has learned so much,” she informed him. Elayne; her father’s gift. A red headed girl who resided in the tower. One who had the curse of death magic. An interesting magic that Élise would love to learn all about.

So, what about you?

It wasn’t like he had ever felt like a bastard in this household. Everyone had treated him like the son of Mathieu and Delphine. His bastard surname was just that, a meaningless annoyance. By legitimising him, that was the only thing that changed. He was now officially a Deveaux on paper too. It didn’t make him feel any different. Of course he felt honoured, but he knew that his family would love him the same as they had done before. And he appreciated that more than a surname. Perhaps it would open some new doors for him though. A new opportunity to explore, once he would eventually leave his ancestral home again.

That was for later, however. For now, he wanted to enjoy the company of his sister some more. Now their parents had gone to bed, they had time to catch up on subjects they had avoided during dinner. Like how her so called ‘projects’ were going. He knew what went on in that tower of hers, was better kept a secret. If the local authorities were to find out, they would punish her severely. He didn’t miss the shimmer in her eyes as she mentioned her newest achievements.

”And so have you, I assume?” He asked her. He swirled the dark red liquid around in his glass. Of course he could have expected the question to be returned to him too. ”I have learned quite a lot myself too”, He grinned at her. He took a deep sip of his drink before leaning backwards in the chair a bit more. ”My acquaintances started to bore me, so I shifted my attention to strangers”, He explained. ”It’s much more of a challenge when it’s harder to predict the response of people, instead of knowing with certainty how they are going to react”, He went on. He had still a lot of room for improvement, which was not a bad case. At least he had something to do then.

Élise had always been fascinated by science. A lot of people were, but most weren’t nearly strong enough to do what was necessary to learn. When someone died, she would cut him open and check everything there was inside. She knew how the human body worked and what part of their inside was where exactly, knowing how they were connected and what they looked like when cut open. It was a knowledge most would not ever need, but it fascinated her. Because, why would you not want to know what was inside of every single person?

Jules too, seemed to have learned a lot on his recent trips and Élise nodded in excitement. She loved learning! Even as a child, she had spent so much time reading, learning words most kids her age would never dare to spell. She had been a quick learner too, destined for great things. Or, so her father had told her. He decided to get her into his business, teaching the young girl about his trades. She had learned to bend rules and defy morality, to accomplish that which only she could.

The unexpected is amazing, is it not?” she asked with a smile. “So have you been making yourself useful, dear brother, or have you spent your time pillaging and sailing without purpose?” she asked him with a soft smile. Somewhere, her mind longed for an adventure like that too, to sail off and find places she had never seen before. Her mind was like an endless pit, which swallowed all the information around her, yet it hungered for more and more. There was never enough time to learn and even when she set to just chill, she ended up spending time with her head in the books, or practicing some potions she had not yet managed to make successfully. The wicked never seemed to be able to rest and by now, it was very clear that she was wicked in more ways than she dared to admit.

The practises of his sister were questionable. Her so called projects were not at all ethical. Then again, he was probably the last person on this earth who could call her out on her morals. His own were pretty fucked up too. And in a way, he could see why she did it. He could sense her motives, perhaps because they were similar to his. Constant improvement, becoming an expert on matters and keep on learning and learning new facts. It was an insatiable thirst he shared with her, though it manifested in different ways. Hers was hard science, his was more social psychology. But they both used their talent to benefit for themselves.

And their father’s business.

Of course he knew about it. It would take a blind person not to see the shady practises going on. Not that his lovely mother was stupid, but she loved her family just too much to admit it. Or, that was his guess. However, no one had ever told him about it directly. It was always kind of left in the dark. He had never asked about it either. Because he felt like there was a reason as to why he was not in on it, or in on it yet. But he knew she was. So when Élise asked him if he had made himself useful, he smirked. This was the cue he had been waiting for. ”I can make myself useful from time to time, dear sister. I wish father would acknowledge that, more than I wanted him to legitimise me”, He said, casting a line for her to come clean about it. Or she wouldn’t. He didn't really know what to expect. The unexpected was truly amazing indeed.

She remembered the day her father had told her about his business. It had been a meeting between him and a very important man. He said the man was his eyes and ears of the Crownlands. When they met, Élise found out that the man was only about twenty years old. He was handsome - incredibly so. And he had his eyes on her from the very moment they met. As instructed, Élise did nothing but smile, laugh at his jokes and nod as he spoke to her.

Her father told her that making a deal with the young man had never been as easy as it had been that day. The young man was a womanizer. One who was too arrogant to make a deal with a man, but place a pretty girl in front of him and he was lost. Most people were not that shallow; not nearly as much. But, it was the introduction to his business. Her father explained everything. How he paid people in different ways. Most were a trade of knowledge. Captains who gave him intel of everything they heard, while her dad taught them in trades. Children who told him what they heard on the streets, in trade for potions made by Élise that could aid their sick parents. Her father told her that she was made to do this. That she could turn everything so much better. And she had. He had made her work for it. She crafted potions and poisons, spoke to his clients and traveled across the country. When she had free time, she continued her own research. And it all proved worthy. Because they underestimated her. Those who were too arrogant to trust her father, were too shallow to distrust her.

And then there was Jules. Oh, how she would have loved to have him with her. Brother and sister against the world. It would have been a fairytale, now wouldn’t it? But her dad had told her otherwise. Jules did not have what she had. He didn’t have the calmth, he didn’t have what it took to convince people, without turning it ugly. And as they grew older, Élise had come to understand. Now that he had ruined his skin, she felt like people would sooner distrust him than to trust him.

For the first time ever, he asked. The brunette let out a soft sigh, shaking her head. “Father knows you are useful, Jules,” she told him, a soft smile on her lips. It was the same smile she wore when she talked to strangers. One he, as her family, would barely recognize. “But we are all very different and everyone has their own purposes,” she followed up. “I am sure he is proud of you and your travels.” She did not want to explain it, so she twisted her words. Because that was what she had practiced for years now.

GO DOWN A SAVAGE

Never had he felt like he was less of a son than Élise was the daughter of house Deveaux. He had realised more than once how lucky he had been to have been born to Mathieu. He had never had any reason to complain. He had gotten all the opportunities a normal child would have gotten, despite his last name. He had been offered to squire to a knight. Not an extremely famous one, but one that was respected among his equals nonetheless. He had declined. Because, on a way deeper level, there was a difference between him and his sister. It was true, he had always gotten whatever the heart of a child could desired. But he, he was no normal child.

Because this was not a normal family.

And yet he had not been part of that what he truly desired to be part of most. Doubt had settled in his heart. He had the feeling like he was not good enough, that he hadn’t deserved it. And he had blamed it on the strange dreams that haunted him. He had always felt, or feared, that his father knew. That he could see in his eyes that there was something wrong. Something off. His temper was bad, his patience was thin and his talents were limited. For a very long time, he had believed that to be the truth.

But then, how could he have judged him for that? How could he have kept him in the dark for so long? He had tried really hard to prove that he had what it took. That he was dependable, that he could be an asset to his father just like Élise was. It was an insecurity and it was killing him inside. Especially when his sister tried to defuse the situation with her tricks. She never smiled at him like that. ”But he has never told me mine, has he? There is no plan for me, his poor bastard son”, He replied in a cold tone. If he thought he could mislead him with nice gifts, then he was sorely mistaken.

Élise was not an angry person. She did not often let emotion get the best of her. It was rare for her to get mad or sad, but she could feel victorious. Never truly ecstatic, however. Her mind was like the Golden Hills, while his was more like the Burning heights. Hers was calm, with some bumps and a ray of sunshine. It looked beautiful. His, however, was filled with jacked ups and downs. It was fire - it was pride. It was a dangerous place, yet it served its purpose. They were so different, yet so alike.

His words were the first thing in ages to anger her, though it was ever so slightly. She wiped the fake smile off her face and raised her brows at the boy in front of her. For at this moment, that was what he was. Not a man. Not worthy of participating in the family business. He was the angry boy he had been years ago and the angry boy that he would be for years to come.

Do you honestly think it has anything to do with you being a bastard?” she asked, her voice filled with fire as she did. “Because you are wrong. You know he is giving you everything we have. From the moment he legitimized you, this House was yours.” Perhaps he hadn’t thought of that. He was the heir to everything now. Not her. Not anymore. She took a moment of silence and took a deep breath in, before blowing the air out again and speaking on.

He did not make a plan for you, because you haven’t proven yourself.” Her voice was calmer this time, as she spoke word for word, to try and make what she was telling him more clear.

On his travels, he had tried to reinvent himself numerous times. Seek the origin of his anger and destroy it. What he had found though, had not made him feel very hopeful of actually ever getting there. In foreign territory, he had met people who had different beliefs. People who had different values and cultures. People with other stories than the ones he had heard every night before going to bed. And it had made so much clear. It had frightened him though. Because he knew that it was a part of him that he would probably never completely understand, nor control.

It had nothing to do with him being a bastard. He didn’t care about that at all. At least not the name part. It was the heritage that bothered him. It was the fact that, according to the research he had done, his condition was a trait that was passed down by blood. His father didn’t have it. His sister didn’t either. So he had long concluded it must have been his mother, a whore, who possessed the blood of dragons. It was she who had passed it down to him, meaning that he would never truly be the son his father had wanted. And he doubted the man himself knew why he acted like he did, where that sometimes strange behaviour and inexplicable outbursts of anger came from.

It was in that moment that he saw a spark of that in her eyes too. The ever so calm Élise, angered by her brother. It was a rare sight, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that if he hadn’t been her blood, she would have punished him for it like they did here in the North. Now, she only laced her tone with a fire. She had a point. The House was his. But that was not what he wanted. He wanted his empire. “I know he loves me. I know he cares for me and wants the best for me. But he also makes me feel stupid because I can’t figure out how to prove myself, and that in itself means I fail”, He said through gritted teeth. He wanted it really bad, but he had no clue how to achieve it.

Jules was always stuck in that where they differed. He knew he was loved, yet he seemed to try and find out why he was so different from his sister. In this process, there was a lot lost. He didn’t see things like she did. He focussed on one thing, blind to others. Yet she sat back and watched things unfold before responding to them. This was why her father had trusted her and not him. One day he would understand.

You don’t see it, do you?” she asked, her brows furrowed in disbelief. “You focus on how he makes you feel stupid because you can’t figure it out,” she told him. “Have you ever sat down and tried? Have you ever asked him why?” she continued. The young woman shook her head, a sigh leaving her in an effort to lose the tension that had crawled into her muscles.

You focus on the differences and forget how much we share in common,” she calmly told the boy. “You change your ways when it is around father.” At least, that was what she saw. “You go out into the world and take your chances, you don’t let anyone tell you no,” she explained to her brother. “Yet, here you wait for him?” Her voice was filled with disbelief. She wouldn’t have. Her father had not chosen to allow her into the tower. She had followed him. She had begged to take one book each time, until he allowed her to stay there. Everything she had, she had fought for. Because that was the Deveaux way. They turned no’s into yesses, because a no was never good enough. “If you want to prove your worth, then just do it.” She knew how. Did he?

GO DOWN A SAVAGE
go down fighting。

In the old days, his blood would actually have meant something. In the time of dragons and dragonriders, his magic would be considered a blessing. Now it was useless, and it made him feel cursed rather than blessed. His temper had gotten in the way before, and he knew it would eventually happen again. There was nothing he could do to stop it though. It just flared up inside of him and he could not extinguish that flame entirely. Even now, with his own sister, he felt the urge to lash out at her. It was only because he badly wanted to prove himself, that he managed to keep it down, for now. If he kept it inside of him too long, however, at a certain point he would reach his limit. The longer he waited, the more nuclear his outburst would be.

Now was not the time though. He wanted to listen, hoping she had the piece of the puzzle he was still missing to finally see the bigger picture. Because she was right. He didn’t see it. He just shook his head when she asked him. Her advice was to just do it. Not consider his father’s opinion and choose his own path. Take what he wanted, like he did in any other situation. He let her words sink in for a while, as they sat in silence. His gaze was pointed towards the glass he held, but he wasn’t focussing on that. He was clearly in thoughts. After a bit, he frowned lightly, making his final decision. ”I will go talk to him tomorrow. I will tell him I want to learn what he needs me to know in order to be useful to him. And I will tell him I only want his brightest prodigy to teach me”, He said, a smirk tugging at the corners of his mouth. Hopefully she wouldn’t mind if he tagged along next time she ventured out herself. And if she did.. Well, this time he wouldn’t let anyone tell him no.

Jules looked more like their father than she did, though she had never complained about this. Having taken after her mother, she had a soft skin, with hazel eyes and a kind face. Her hair was like a storm; wild and untamed, yet it seemed to look beautiful no matter which way she wore it. Curled or straight, loose or tied up, it always seemed to look good. Her brother looked more stern, which was something she was glad to miss. Her kind looks had made her seem trustworthy, something her father had taught her to use to her advantage.

Finally, mister Stubborn seemed to understand. He told her that he was going to tell their father that he wanted to learn and that he would only accept one person to teach him. Élise took the bridge of her nose between thumb and index finger, staying quiet for just a second. After, she shrugged. “I needed someone to accompany me to the Ruby Bay anyhow,” she told him with a smile. “Guess we are going on a trip, little brother.

This would be interesting.

GO DOWN A SAVAGE
go down fighting。

All these years he had contemplated on the right course of action. It had caused him to leave the house and go out into the world, looking for ways to prove to his father he could be useful to him and his business. Whatever he had tried, it had never brought him to the point where his father had informed him officially. And now he finally had found the courage to speak up about it, he had a clearer view on what to do. Élise advised him to treat this situation as he would do any other. Just go after what he wanted and let no one stop him in the process.

So, that was exactly what he would do.

Knowing his own weaknesses, he realised that he still had a lot to learn. He also knew that he would not listen to a lot of people on this planet. His parents and his sister were the only ones he could take criticism from and actually try to improve after. In his mind it was obvious who he wanted as his teacher. She didn’t seem too excited about it, but in the end she shrugged anyway. Jules grinned when she said they would go on a trip to Ruby Bay. ”Now this is something I’m looking forward to, big sister”, He said, after which he drank the content of his glass in one go. ”I will inform father in the morning. Goodnight to you”, He added. He then got up and left the room. He would sleep well knowing he was finally making progress.
