Wineport grew smaller and smaller every hour they were longer on the way. The city he stayed at for months was now nothing anymore. Jupiter didn’t think it would feel so strange, but it did. Wineport was home to, a home where he had hated the people but also got to respect them. The home of his wife. But knowing he was traveling to Cear Scion made all of those thoughts fade. After weeks of recovering and months of living here, he would finally see his family again. There was nothing that mattered more. To just have a little bit of peace, to find some comfort and time to heal.

Where a big part of the army already sailed back home Jupiter and Ophelia road with a small group of soldiers through the Glade back home. His arm was in a sling, hurting like hell but he didn’t show it on his face. The only sign of his slow recovery was his pale expression. As they left the cities of the Glade behind the weather started to feel more like him. Jupiter looked aside to Alec who kept his promise and guided him to the border, leading him home. It was one of the things he would be forever grateful for, for this man and his undying loyalty to the Freyr’s. But he wasn’t only a Lord commander, for Jupiter he became a friend to. ‘The weather is changing.’ He noticed. The wind became colder. And the further you looked, the whiter the image became. Home.

As long as a Freyr would remain in Wineport he needed to remain as well. That was his sworn duty. And he wasn’t going to put his duty next to him. Even though his heart ached to go back to Willa, more and more each day. But he had kept his own emotions at bay. Just spending time with Jupiter whenever he wasn’t spending time with the Vigneron’s, keeping an eye on him. Because that was expected from him or that was what he expected from himself. But eventually the day had come that they had left the Vigneron castle. Riding back out to the North and a part of him was stoked about it. Yet a whole other part already felt the hurt crawl back in.

Alec rode out front of the small group, flanked by another knight. Every once in a while he did glance over his shoulder to see how Jupiter was doing. But the pale expression didn’t seem all too grand. Eventually the Commander fell back a little bit, riding next to the young man a faint smile on his lips. Their surroundings began to change and he grinned softly. The north would always be home. ’We’re getting closer. I think about a day and a half ride.' He softly hummed, if they kept up this pace which wasn’t too fast or too slow. ’Might I suggest we spend the night in one of the inns along the road?’ He had no problem with sleeping out in the open, but given what happened to him last time he travelled these roads he’d rather harbor Jupiter and Ophelia somewhere safe.

Jupiter looked forward to the moment he could embrace his brother, to witness little baby Mercury, to be in his own room with his own bed. To recover. But how much he wanted to go home, he left things behind to. Like Alec, their Lord Commander. The man had done nothing more than be there for Jupiter. To serve the Freyr’s like he had been doing for years. Depending on someone like him was rare, because they come and go. But not Alec, Alec had been here for years. And his loyalty had never wandered off.

He tried to keep his focus on the road, on Ophelia. But the longer they sat in the saddle the harder it was to concentrate. He could feel his heart pulse in the wound. He was tired, in pain, and Alec noticed it. He rode his horse aside that of Jupiter. A day and a half ride. Jupiter nodded, looking aside to the lord commander. When he suggested an inn Jupiter nodded again. ‘That’s a good idea.’ He agreed. There were inn enough, a bed would do him actually good. Not that he had slept well ever since they departed from Wineport. ‘We get some food, we sleep.’ He turned looked to his other side to Ophelia who seemed to agree. The rest did too. Jupiter breathed out, looking aside to Alec again. ‘Do you know the region and it’s people well?’ He asked. Alec was the only one he trusted. Once they were crossing the border he knows the way well enough, but until then this was unknown territory.

If things weren’t how they were Alec would’ve gladly gone with Jupiter to Caer Scion. But he just couldn’t. Not with the pain that the place actually held. The only moment he would ever return there was with Willa by his side and he doubted that she ever wanted to set foot back there. Though that wasn’t the main concern when it came down to his marriage. If anything his main concern was if their love could still be salvaged after everything.. He knew he still loved her but honestly he had no clue what was going on in Willa’s mind, not even after their short abrupt meeting months ago.

The other took his suggestion well and he softly smiled. It would be better for the lot of them if they got some rest. Alec felt the wound on his shoulder pound as well, but it was probably nothing compared to what the young Freyr must be feeling right now. But he wasn’t going to address it. ’Exactly, maybe even a hot bath if we are lucky.’ He shortly grinned at the man trying to lighten the air again. When the question came if he knew the region he shortly frowned for a moment. ’I just to patrol the area a lot, lots of people around that you want to get in contact with actually. But there are a good couple of inns around here.’ Maybe keeping the little detail about him being abducted not so far from here to himself. ’Nothing will happen to us here if that’s what you’re worried about. Too many soldiers.’

To find an inn to rest seemed to be the best plan. Jupiter could do this in one go if he wanted to but not now. He felt like dropping off his horse any moment and Ophelia saw that. But she kept it to herself. She would worry about his state when they were alone. No, he needed to be a leader, for the small group of soldiers traveling with them. Tomorrow Alec wouldn’t ride with them, if he wasn’t able to think clearly there was a change they wouldn’t make it in one piece. Pain could be quite the silent killer.

A hot bath. Jupiter looked over to Ophelia who road on the other side of him, she smiled softly, like the idea of getting out of these clothes and enjoy some warmth. Jupiter didn’t need a bath as much as he needed something else. So he asked Alec if he knew the people, the surrounding. He looked aside to the man as he answered. He slowly nodded, watching a village in the distance as Alec went on. He immediately shook his head. ‘I trust our men, you,’ he paused, looking back to the village. ‘I need something against the pain.’ He then said, slowly looking back aside him. His voice was soft. ‘Do you know a good alchemist or physician around?’ He then asked. Some rest would do him some good but he hoped to travel the last part through the North with less pain than he had now.

An inn would be most welcome that was sure. His shoulder was getting more then sore as well and even though he wanted to be back in the Evergreen as fast as he could. He wasn’t going to put his duty and the promise he had made in front of that. The border was close enough, but he’d rather see Jupiter safe and sound at that border, so they could ride out in one straight go for the capital. This Freyr needed to go home, there was no discussion about it. It would do him good to be home, to rest up in his own bed surrounded by his family. But first, some well deserved rest for the whole lot of them.

When the other spoke of trust he smiled shortly, nodding respectfully. His ask didn’t came fully unexpected, a smile lingering around his lips. ’I’ll ride out to the village and fetch you something.’ He nodded, yeah he knew an alchemist there. One that had helped him ages ago when he had gotten hurt on a hunt, nothing severe but well. ’I’d ask to come with, but I’d understand if you wanted to remain by your wife her side.’ He smiled softly. More than understand even. Sure, the inn was a place to be trusted and they had their men but he wanted them both safe and sound and preferably together as well. ’If not, meet me in the bar here in about half an hour hm?’

The closer they got to the border the more exhausted it becomes for Jupiter. Maybe it was his shoulder or maybe it was a simple thought that he was almost home. He arched for a few weeks of rest between walls he knew, with the family that he trusted. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust the Vignerons but they would never be able to replace what the Freyr’s were to him. His loyalty still laid home. If Apollo wanted to go to war against the people he had lived among for months, he simply would. Because that was his duty to his house, how bad that may be for Ophelia to hear.

Jupiter wasn’t one to quickly show his vulnerabilities, he wasn’t one to ask for help quickly either. But he did it, because he otherwise wouldn’t make it. And after Alec his troubles throughout the weeks it was only logical he turned to him. ‘Thank you.’ He said as soon as Alec said he would ride ahead. As he got on Jupiter shortly looked at Ophelia. ‘You go,’ he smiled. Alec understood. Even with one arm out of function, he wasn’t planning on leaving Ophelia undefended. Even with her guards around. Jupiter nodded to Alec his words to meet each other at an inn. ‘I will.’ A short exhausted smile came on his lips as one of the other guards took over from Alec, leading them to an inn they were able to rest. Jupiter hardly had the strenght to get out of the saddle himself before they went in. A room, a bed, decent food. He could see the relief on his wife’s face as much as he felt it himself.

The journey back home wasn’t one that was easy. Not for the battered men that were sitting on the back of their horses. But it anything they would be going home that was what drove them in the end. While Alec was in fact riding away from the person he considered home. Made him feel more than conflicted about it, but it was his duty to escort them safely back to the Highlands. It was the least he could do for Jupiter. A young man he counted among his friends now. Making his connection to House Freyr that much stronger even while he was away from the capital in the north.

’I’ll be back soon, get some rest and something to eat hm?’ He smiled at the young man. And soon enough he rode away on the stallion. Towards the little village that he had come across ages ago. The ride itself wasn’t that long, but for the alchemist to gather what he specifically asked for that took a while. Making Alec stroll around the village for a little while, talking to the people who brought to his attention that things weren’t going to well around these parts the last couple of weeks. Which wasn’t good. After what felt like ages, but was only a small hour later he was riding back, vials safely put away in his saddlebag riding back to that very inn. Keeping an eye out for the bandits that had been talked about by the villagers but he didn’t come across them, for which he was grateful. Putting his horse in the stable, he eventually walked in, greeted by the warmth and a nice glass of ale already waiting for him. Looking around for Jupiter.

Jupiter rarely showed himself as weak. But he saw no other option for it was written all over his face. His man understood that, everybody with a wound like this shouldn’t be sitting on a horse. He knew Ophelia wasn’t agreeing with all of this but Jupiter wanted to go home. He looked aside to Alec, nodding to his words. Food and rest, almost sounded like music in his ears. They looked at how Alec road off before they all diverted course to one of the inns.

After making sure the others got everything they had and Ophelia found herself a servant who could help her with a bath Jupiter went back down, finding himself an empty table. His eyes went over the people, people who looked at him in suspicion, others friendly. Jupiter would never be comfortable in an inn that wasn’t up North. The innkeeper brought him some food as Alec walked in and he ordered another plate for the lord commander. As soon as Alec found him a servant came to bring with another plate. ‘I thought you would like some food too.’ He shortly smiled. Now that Alec was here he found a way of relaxing his body, which made the pain almost worse. He wasn’t really hungry, he just needed to rest. But given both Ophelia and Alec wouldn’t agree he at least tried.

Alec would never come to think about this as doing that little extra. If anything the man wanted to be sure that Jupiter at least would get a good night’s rest. He needed it for the rest of the ride to come. Since Alec wouldn’t travel much further into the Highlands then he already had. Maybe just a bit, but he was needed elsewhere as well. He needed to find his wife if anything. Set things straight or at least try. It was time that he faced his inner demons and he could only do that with Willa at his side. So as he was riding back to the inn, he went a bit slower. Keeping an eye on his surroundings. But right now he couldn’t see any weird things for that matter so he urged the white steed to go faster.

Stepping in and shaking the cold off him. Surely missing his normal attire right now. He had forgotten to take an actual cloak with him so that was an error on his end. But as a plate of food was waiting for him Alec smiled softly. ’Thank you, it’s needed.’ Starving to say the least. Shortly he eyed the plate of the other and hummed. ’Not hungry I assume?’ It wasn’t something he didn’t understand, yet he would need the food to fuel his body if anything. But well, he was only going to suggest it not force him. That wouldn’t work anyway. ’How are you feeling? Truthfully?

It was like some kind of comfort that fell down upon his shoulders the moment Alec walked into that inn. He breathed out, watching the man approach the table before he sat down. Jupiter hadn’t touched his food, his pale skin not only signaled he was born up north but it also said he was tired and most of all, in pain. So he knew how weak his position was. For that, he hadn’t regretted the promise this lord commander had made to lead him to the border.

He shortly smiled when Alec eyes his own plate. Most of them would be hungry. Jupiter carefully leaned back, ignoring the wave that runs over him. ‘No.’ He admitted when Alec looked at his plate. ‘Means you can eat for two if you want to.’ He smiled again. But as the other asked how he was feeling the smile slowly died away. He looked to a couple walking in before he looked back to the lord commander. ‘Not good.’ He admitted. ‘Ophelia will change my bandages later but if I can’t,’ he signed, letting the other in on his vulnerabilities. ‘If I can’t control the pain I won’t be making it home.’ He admitted. The pain was eating at his energy. But also at his sleep. He wasn’t able to sleep, let alone rest. Every move he made woke him up again. So he hoped Alec had found something, for both their sakes.

The other didn’t look to good to be fair and it was worrying him that was for sure. But he didn’t want to voice it in that way. Mainly because he didn’t want Jupiter to feel even worse than he probably already was. A soft smile lingered around his lips as he spoke those words. Making him shortly sake his head. ’Your wife would have my head. Besides, if anything you have to eat something Jupiter to gather some strength for the road ahead.’ Not untrue. Alec would lead hm to the border and then would leave him in the capable hands of his men. But they could only do so much, if the person in front of him was actually refraining from eating then it wouldn’t end good.

But as he spoke plainly about how he was feeling he softly nodded. Understanding his words. Shortly frowning. ’Luckily for you, I can’t let that happen.’ He spoke a hint of worry in his voice as he looked at the other, faint smile curling around his lips. Reaching for three vials in his pocket placing them on the table. Two of them had the same yellow color, while another had a deep dark blue hue. ’Yellow is for the pain, blue is for sleeping. Only a few drops of the blue and you’ll be sleeping through the night. Same goes for the yellow. But you can have up to a good ten to twelve drops a day if you’re travelling.’ He looked at the other. ’No more, or you will meet an untimely end.’ Alec pressed him on the heart because well, he didn’t want the other to take too much. Meaning, he’d tell Ophelia about this as well. After saying that, he started eating. ’The woman also said, that it works best after you’ve eaten. And no, this is not me saying that so you’ll eat.’

Ophelia would have his head. Well, he would believe that if she didn’t already love him that much. A tired smile came on his lips as he looked back down to his plate. But he really wasn’t hunger. The pain and exhaustion dominated everything he felt otherwise. Maybe when he slept for a while … he should have listened to Ophelia, and just stay a little longer in Wineport. He took a piece of breath, tearing a piece from it, chewing so very slowly. He didn’t even taste it. He almost felt like a child, forced to eat. But they were right, he had to or he wouldn’t make it back to Cear Scion.

He shortly chuckled over the words, squeezing his eyes as he held on to his painful arm. His eyes adjusted to the three vails he placed on the table. Yellow and blue. Jupiter reached for the yellow one, looking at it while Alec explained their use and how much he could take. ‘It looks like poison.’ He noticed before placing them back down. ‘Thank you.’ He nodded, still looking at the vails. He better left that in Ophelia his capable hands. He couldn’t resist another tired smile as Alec continued. ‘Already working on it.’ He said, staring down his plate. He took another bite, staring at the vails. He had never taken a potion before. ‘I will be never able to suppress my gratitude in actions. But you know that house Freyr is always here for you.’ He said, looking back to Alec. ‘My brother will hear from this.’ He continued. Alec did way more than he should have. And for that, he would be rewarded.

The other had reached for a piece of bread and he softly smiled as he started eating as well. Because yes, he had been starving and unlike the man in front of him the pain wasn’t getting to him as much apart from an uneasy feeling in his shoulder. But that was it. He looked at him from time to time and hummed. Jupiter was alive. He had fulfilled that duty at least. He could only hope for the young Freyr that he would heal from the wounds he had, that he would recover completely and be ready for battle again one day. Not that he was expecting any more battles right away but in the end no one could be sure about that.

’Too much of the blue and you won’t wake up anymore. So I expect you listen to me on this.’ Alec informed the other. A short smile resting on his lips. If anything he was sure that Jupiter in fact would listen to him on this matter. And well, he’d tell Ophelia as well so she could keep an eye on it too. The other was slowly eating and well that’s all that he could ask right now. Shortly he shook his head as the other continued. ’It’s only my duty to help out any Freyr.’ Which was true. It was his duty, yet he saw them as family as well. He’d give up his life for them if asked. ’I can’t say when I’ll be back in Caer Scion, but I hope to see you there soon enough.’ And his brother. Maybe not his newborn cousin that would be too much even for him. But there was a part of him that was dying to go back.

Jupiter hated it. To rely on potions and herbs that could be unreliable, have side effects, could do more damage than their intended purpose. But he had to. If he didn’t take something against the pain he wouldn’t be able to rest properly. And if he didn’t get some sleep he wouldn’t survive the next day without collapsing. As he watched the poitons he listened to Alec his instructions. It looked too colorful to be taken, blue, yellow, what if he would get poisoned?

He looked back to Alec, nodding. ‘I’m listening.’ He stated with a serious look. Jupiter wasn’t stupid, he trusted Alec, he trusted Ophelia and both of them were in charge of his health now. He wasn’t planning on dying anytime soon, otherwise, he would just have stayed on that battlefield. There was probably a soldier who would help him out of his misery there. Jupiter looked down on his plate, forcing little food in his body before he paused and leaned back again. He shortly smiled. Men like Alec were rare these days. As he continued Jupiter his gaze drifted to the other people in the inn. ‘You know winter will be harder to travel, we won’t blame you if you stay south with Willa, it’s safer.’ He explained. Being on the road in full winter was dangerous. And winter was coming. Jupiter was only home to recuperate, what his future held was still unsure.

Potions, he wasn’t a big fan of them either to be fair. But thanks to Vesper, thanks to the Grace who had helped him out. He was more trusting towards them and well he knew the person who made this particular set of potions as well so that was also a big plus in the end. But it wasn’t for himself. No, he pressed Jupiter into being cautions with these kind of things. Mainly because well, he didn’t want to lose the young Freyr. That would be an utter shame. As he spoke that he was listening he shortly smiled while continuing to eat.

‘I doubt that Willa wont want to come up. To visit the baby’s grave..’ The man spoke softer. ’No winter can stop her then.’ Because he was quite certain that eventually when all sadness, possible anger was settled she’d want to visit. Off course he hoped that she’d make up her mind to travel sooner rather than later. But that was her call to make in the end. ’I need to see if Manea hasn’t slaughtered all our men.’ He shortly grinned, leaning back as he finished his plate ordering a drink for himself shortly glancing at Jupiter. ’Hey mate? Take care of that wife of yours hm?’ He kenw Jupiter was an honest men, a man that certainly seemed to be in love with his wife. If anything that was something that should be protected at all cast. He had let it slip out of his fingers and he had been miserable ever since.

Their pride, both as Freyr’s and highlanders prevented them from reaching out to things like this. Up north they learned to bite through the pain, to endure what the gods bring down to them. But Jupiter couldn’t believe that being stabbed only to survive, followed by a fever of infection was a sign he should now die at the hand of a potion. If he needed to die the gods had all their chances in doing so. So while he looked at the potions he accepted the idea of taking them, knowing it wouldn’t only settle his pain but also fasten the travel he was in. Because with this pain it seemed to take ages.

When Alec pointed out that Willa wanted to see the baby’s grave he only nodded shortly, compassionate. He softly smiled when he said that winter wouldn’t be able to stop her. But you didn’t need to be stupid about it either. During winter traveling became almost impossible up north. He didn’t want Willa to endure that. When he spoke about Manea however he couldn’t help but let out a sarcastic chuckle. ‘That would be Manea yes. You better ask yourself if she isn’t slaughtering you for taking so long.’ He said. He didn’t like Manea, never did. But she was a value to house Freyr, the best there was under the woman. He respected her for that, but he would never show her. When Alec said he should take care of his wife there was a short confusion in Jupiter his eyes. ‘Offcourse.’ He said, still watching Alec with certain confusion. ‘I give her a promise the day she married me, you know I’m one to keep promises.’ He said with a confirming nod. He didn’t know what the future would hold, but it would be with Ophelia, it always would.

Jupiter seemed to be accepting of the potions. Which he could only recommend. It was what was needed for him to bring this journey to a good end. It would help him and that was the most important part in the end. His eyes shortly wandered outside, the snow was already ascending upon them. Yet nothing as bad as they were used to. This kind would clear out in the morning, yet it would harden the ground together with the frostier winds here. A short sigh slipped. Oh, how he missed it here. But it wasn’t his time to return, not yet.

Winter wouldn’t keep Willa away. If anything it would make her even more stubborn then she already was. Another one of those traits he loathed yet loved at the same time. Love, such a peculiar thing. The sarcastic chuckle the other let go off made him raise a brow. ’Well, she almost killed me before I left so you could be right about that.’ He chuckled softly. If anything that had been entirely his fault and he knew it. But at that time he just didn’t see straight, he couldn’t distinct right from wrong and that was a very dangerous position to be in. ’I’m one to keep promises as well Jupiter.. Look where that made me end up huh?’ Softly he hummed. But he wished nothing but the best for both Jupiter and Ophelia, they deserved it. ’Love is a strange thing.’ He spoke on a softer tone. Very strange if you asked him. ’Can I ask you something about you two?’ Maybe he shouldn’t though. It was rather private and in the end none of his business. But he was curious.

You only got to know the people around you by spending time with them. And despite he knew Alec to be a loyal commander to house Freyr, he also proved to be a friend. Where Rayan had saved him from the brick of death Alec was the one who had watched over him during his time in Wineport. Who brought him where he was today. Without him, Rayan and Ophelia he probably wouldn’t even survive it. And now they were on their way home and he hoped Alec would follow soon.

Jupiter, how tired he was, couldn’t help but chuckle about the comment Alec made over Manae. It wasn’t a secret that both of them never seemed to agree. When he said she almost killed him before he left made Jupiter shortly smile. ‘Don’t think you need to worry if she was the one training your men.’ He pointed out. His half-sister was skilled, as skilled as Apollo was. But the subject changed a little as Ophelia became the center of their conversation. Jupiter didn’t fully understand but he listened anyway. He only nodded at the words, yes, he understood that. ‘It’s fragile, if it isn’t building you it surely breaks you.’ He agreed with the words. Love was strange but it was the only thing he was fighting for. The love for his family and Ophelia. When Alec asked him if he could ask something Jupiter slowly squeezed his eyes. ‘Yes?’ He said with some confusement. Everybody knew Jupiter hated personal questions. So depending on the answer there would be an answer or not.

It was inevitable that he would one day return to the North. It was his home that was one thing, always had been. But a part of the place he called home was the woman that had disappeared to the Evergreen when everything had come crumbling down. And if one thing, he couldn’t return to home without her. His heart just couldn’t take that simple matter and dismiss it. So no, maybe not today but he was hoping before winter or right after winter depending on how things would actually go. But that was something he didn’t need to burden Jupiter with, he already had enough trouble of his own.

’Oh, I’m not worried about that. Just about the fact about how many she leaves alive to actually tell the tale.’ Alec chuckled softly and looked at the other. There was no doubt that Manea would do her job, if anything she was cut out to do just that. Softly he nodded at the words of the other. And oh, how it had almost broken him. How he had been on the verge of actually giving up weeks ago now. The young Freyr looked at him and he shortly hummed. Good, thin ice for sure but well maybe he’d get an answer. He wouldn’t know if he didn’t try right? ’I don’t need an answer, this is just curiosity at its finest. But, did you love her? When you two married I mean, or did it grown into that after?’ He had lowered his voice, there was no need that the rest of the people here needed to know this. He didn’t need to know this. But if anything, arranged weddings like this they tended to only love each other at a later point in time.
