She knew that the warden of the north would be in their castle for a few days, but that did not mean that the normal work did not need to continue. If there was no hunting, then they would have no food or they would notice it later on. So she got up at about the same time as she normally would and got dressed in some clothes which were easy to move in. If they had dinner with the warden of the north, she would put on one of her dresses, but when it came to hunting they were just not the right clothes. Once she had grabbed her hunting gear, she opened the door and stepped outside her room. Now she just needed to make it outside without crossing paths with someone who would stop her from going out, telling her there was something else she could better be doing. Maybe she could find a guard who wanted to go with her, so she could use her spiritwalking for once and not just her bow when it came to hunting.

His plan was to stay for a couple of days, observe the people around the castle and hear from them how they experienced the current state of their lives. If they were happy with how stuff was organised, if they were confident in their ability to survive the upcoming winter. Even in warmer seasons, the weather up North could be harsh. Apollo wanted to make sure his people were as strong as they could possibly be. Not only would that reward him with their loyalty, when the time came to go to war, his army would consist of capable warriors.

Before he could do all that, the man wanted to go check upon his horses. He knew they would probably be taken care of properly, but he would not be worthy to own a horse if he didn’t go check in person. On his way outside, he ran into someone who could only be of the same kin as the Head of House herself. The red hair didn’t lie about it. Apollo pulled up his brow for a second. ”Early morning for you, my Lady?” He asked her. She looked like she was on her way to somewhere too, so he hoped he didn’t interrupt anything of importance.

Her hope of not coming across anyone while going outside was soon shattered when she heard a voice. She had ran into the person whom she might have wanted to run into the least at the moment. "Lord Freyr." She greeted the man with a small bow. She had known the man was in the castle, but she had not expected to run into him here. She knew it was best to be honest with the man, even if he might not approve of it. "For hunting starting early is best." She told him. She was definitely not the only woman who hunted in the Skarsgård house, but she had no idea how this was for the Freyrs. Their house had a lot of spiritwalkers too who could hunt, which was quite useful she had experienced herself. Being an animal yourself without having to rely on weapons felt a lot more natural.

The woman greeted him back with a short bow, but it didn’t seem like she was too eager to talk to him for too long. Which he did not take personal, of course. It was obvious she was not up this early just for the pleasure of it. Soon enough he learned she was on her way to hunt. A soft smile tugged at the corners of his lips. ”I agree”, He said with a nod. ”Are these woods safe enough to go all by yourself?” He then asked. Back in Caer Scion, hunting parties would consist out of at least four people. It was a rule he had enforced even more strict when he had become the new Lord. After the ambush had taken the lives of his Lord Father and their other guards, he refused to take any risks anymore. The Ironwood Forest was a dangerous place to wander all alone.

She did not exactly know what to expect, but for him to ask if it was safe enough to go on her own was something she did not expect. The woods were of course never really safe, but if an predator tried to hurt her she had different ways of making sure she got not hurt. "I would not say safe exactly, since there are predators which we also use to hunt with." But all the same they could take advantage of them by using their spiritwalking. But spiritwalking wasn't her only way of defending herself, she was quite good with the bow and as long as something did not surprise her she could take them out with a bow too if needed. "I use either spiritwalking to protect myself from them or the bow." She could handle a sword too, but she just preferred not to. "Is it different with the Ironwood forest?" There might be more animals there after all and with it different kinds of predators.

It pleased him that even the family that occupied this castle worked together with their people to bring food on the table. In Caer Scion, it was not abnormal for him or one of his siblings to join a hunt either. It raised morale and loyalty, after all. Plus, it was a nice way of relaxing from time to time. Especially for him. He had a lot of his mind at all times, except for when he was hunting. Then he could completely clear his thoughts for a while. A welcome change of pace. Though in all honesty, he tried to avoid the Ironwood Forest, preferring the plains East of the capital. He nodded when she explained the White Wood was in general safe, if they paid attention to other predators.

”You use spiritwalking for hunting as well? That’s interesting. I never heard of that before”, He said, clearly fascinated by the idea. ”The Ironwood Forest is unsafe in different ways. There are gangs of criminals hiding in there, who have a habit of attacking people that pass through for their gold and belongings”, He explained with a frown. It was a plague, really. Even after sending his troops to chase them away or capture them, they kept coming back to cause trouble.

The ironwood forest had criminals in it. It was good to know, they could watch out for them if they ever had to pass through it. "The Ironwood forest is not as far north as the white woods, which might be why the criminals stay there." Most people packed a lot of things to travel north after all, since they did not know what they could find there. With that they were easy targets for criminals, who are more familiar with the woods. A small smile crept onto her face when she got an idea. She did not know if lord Freyr would accept, but she could always try. "Would you like to see how we hunt with spiritwalking?" If he accepted she could show him how they worked and he could be there to protect her own body while she was inside an animal or they could take a guard with them, since he was de warden of the north after all.

The plague of criminal gangs in the Ironwood Forest was one that had been around for quite a while now. He could remember, as a little boy, how his father would send out his troops to clear out the woods. They were good at hiding, however. Plus, they had spies everywhere, to warn them when the Lord sent out a regiment of his warriors. By the time they arrived at a camp, it was empty. When he had squired under Ser Gillian, he had joined those patrols quite often. His last encounter with the highwaymen was the day he had lost his father, and when the North had lost its Warden.

Apollo shook that thought and focussed on Lady Lora. ”Indeed. It’s a plague we can’t seem to get rid of. But I won’t bother you with what troubles me. It is my job to solve this issue and I swear to the Gods I will”, He said with a faint smile. After that, she suggested he’d tag along to see how the whole spiritwalking hunting worked. His eyes sparked with interest again and he didn’t really hesitate. ”It would be an honour”, He replied. ”Allow me to get my bow then. Might as well make myself useful. I’ll meet you at the gate?” He said. It was a nice opportunity he would surely not decline.

It might be true that it was not of their concern what was happening in the Ironwood forest, since when they traveled south they did not need to go through it. But she could understand why it was hard for Caer Scion, since it lay close to it and some travelers from the south did go through there without even knowing that there were criminals there. If she was honest, she hoped lord Freyr would ask for help when he needed it, but she somehow doubted it. So for now she decided to let it rest, focusing on the answer to her answer. She was somehow a bit glad that he decided to go with her. She could explain with words how spiritwalking worked with hunting, but showing it was a lot easier. She was a little surprised that he offered to get his own bow, but she nodded. "I will see you at the gate then, my lord." With a small bow she turned around and left for the gate. Once outside, she made sure everything was ready and walked to the gate. They could go by foot or by horse, but she had not asked lord Freyr which one he preferred, which was why she was waiting on foot, but had made sure the horses could be ready in a minute if needed.

THE RISING SUN

Unexpectedly his day had taken a turn. He had not thought he would go out hunting today, yet here he was. Back in the chamber that had been prepared for him he changed his clothing to an outfit more appropriate for hunting. While travelling, they usually dispatched a small hunting group, not more than a few people, who would hunt for a meal when they set up camp. So every member of his guard, including himself, had a hunting bow in their standard equipment. He assembled the bow and tensed the string properly. With a quiver of dark grey arrows he walked over to where he had agreed on meeting her. She was waiting for him by the gate, as promised. ”Do you plan on going far? For a longer trip I’d rather go by horse, if you don’t mind”, He said. With the weather ever changing, he wouldn’t like to be caught in a sudden snowstorm.

She waited patiently by the gate, knowing it might take lord Freyr a bit of time to prepare. Meanwhile she went over the hunting spots in her head and if she wanted to be able to show what she wanted to show him, then it would be better to go a bit farther into the forest. Her gaze went to the man when he came walking over and nodded to him. "Lets go by horse then. It will also be easier to carry things that way." She signaled to the stable boys to ready the horses and soon enough the two horses were ready for them. She climbed onto her horse and waited till lord Freyr had climbed onto his horse, before she made her horse move through the gate and out of the castle. She steered her horse in the right direction and kept a good pace, but not too fast. She turned to look at the man, making sure he followed her. "We have different hunting spots here, but not all of them have some predators nearby." After all they did use the predators to hunt. Still it was a bit of warning to lord Freyr too, since those animals were still predators. She halted her horse, when she thought they had come to a good spot. She got off her horse and tied the animal to one of the trees, waiting for lord Freyr to do the same.

At last, he was ready to go. He was actually really curious to see this hunting technique in action. He had seen how a spiritwalker took possession of animals, of course. His own kennel master was one. Though a strange individual, his abilities made him exceptionally useful. He hadn’t seen him actually hunting like an animal though. Perhaps he did that on his free time. He wouldn’t be surprised really. The man was more animal than human at times. Either way, he joined Lady Lora at the gate and she concluded they would be better off going by horse.

The stable boys had their horses ready in a whim, and he gently gave his a pat before mounting it. He hung his quiver on the designated loop, attaching it safely to the saddle so he had his hands free to shoot. He encouraged his horse and joined the redhead by her side as she showed the way. ”I see”, He nodded. ”What animals work best for hunting?” He asked, while he as well got down from his horse and tied it to a tree nearby. He picked up his quiver again, pulling one arrow out already, though he would probably not need it.

Once the man had tied his horse to the tree she took a moment to look around. "We mostly use wolves and lynxes that live here to hunt on smaller animals." She answered his question. "Near this place there's a lynx." She told him. She had already noticed the traces of the animal, which meant it was close. She sat down on one of the roots of a tree with her back to the tree, so she would not fall over. After all, if she did not do this, her body would probably fall to the ground. "I can trust you to protect my body?" It might have been better if she had asked him earlier, but this was quite an important part.

THE RISING SUN
sets the horizon ablaze。

As he dismounted his horse, his gaze wandered around the forest for a few seconds. He inspected his surroundings, knowing well enough that there were predators around. It was exactly the purpose of their visit to this particular hunting spot after all. She couldn’t show how she hunted using her spiritwalking abilities if there were no animals to warp into, now could she? That meant that he had to stay alert too though. He couldn’t put his attention on her alone with wild animals lurking about. At least today he didn’t really have to worry about people with bad intentions sneaking up on them. Animals were predictable. They usually left people alone if they were left alone themselves.

The young man followed his companion as she explained they mostly used wolves and lynxes, to hunt smaller animals. He nodded in understanding. ”Makes sense”, He said. He wondered if a group of spiritwalkers could for example take over a pack of wolves to hunt bigger prey. That would require more coordination though. And for that, they needed communication. He didn’t know if they could communicate with each other when in the body of the animals. Keeping a group of humans on the same target was a challenge already, so he could imagine it was even harder for spiritwalkers.

When the redhead found a sturdy tree to lean against, she sat down and made herself as comfortable as possible. Apollo checked the tension of his bowstring again, and he could feel the weight of his battle axe on his hip. ”Of course, my lady”, He said with a reassuring soft smile. He knew the risk a spiritwalker took each time they left their own body, so he would not leave her here unattended.

She had not expected anything less from the man and so she only nodded, before she leaned a bit more against the tree, making sure she would not fall over. She searched for the place where she knew the lynx was and not long after her eyes rolled back and her mind got transferred to the lynx. For a moment she tested everything out, making sure she had full control over the animal. After all, untrained spiritwalkers mostly did not have this kind of control over the animal they took over. Which was of course why they were trained to learn and do this. At first it had felt a bit weird taking over a body that was not human, but soon she had gotten used to it and now it felt like second nature. The only thing which was harder while you were in an animal was communicating. Especially when they were in a group, but sometimes they did do it when they wanted to catch bigger animals, but when she was alone, she kept it to smaller animals.
Once she was sure everything was fine she went back to where lord Freyr was, making sure to not seem threatening, since he might see her for a predator who was trying to attack them. She did keep her distance though, just in case. What she loved the most about animals, was their sense of smell. It was many times better than that of a human and with it she could easily detect the scent of rabbit. She dropped into a crouch and started following the scent trail, soon enough she saw a rabbit sitting not too far away. She tensed her muscles, getting ready for the jump and once she was sure she could make it, she pushed of the ground. Stretching out her front paws with the nails ready to grab the rabbit. The rabbit had sensed her, but too late, so before it had the chance to escape, she bit its neck through. With her catch dangling from her jaws, she walked back to where Apollo was and put the rabbit down there. She already had her senses finding a possible next prey.

THE RISING SUN
sets the horizon ablaze。

The second her mind left her body, he could see how her eyes turned white and how her muscles were limp. She had been leaning against the tree for support, for the better. Else she would’ve tipped and fallen over for sure. He wondered how it felt. What it was like to occupy another body. Was the mind of the animal still in there when a spiritwalker used its body? Or was it gone for a while? It must for sure be weird to be less tall, he figured. That sudden change of perspective on the world, he didn’t know if he would get used to it. Perhaps it was a matter of practise. He trusted she at least knew what she was doing.

That assumption got confirmed when suddenly a lynx appeared at the edge of the open spot where he was waiting. The animal didn’t come any closer, and kept its body language non-threatening. He quickly realised this had to be her. His pale gaze followed the animal as it disappeared again. Not too much later, it came back, now carrying a rabbit carcass between its teeth. He picked it up where it had been dropped and inspected the clean bite that had ended its life. ”Impressive”, He said to the lynx, hoping she could still understand him. He proceeded to tie the legs of the prey together, so it would be easier to carry later on.

At first it might have been weird to get used to the fact that you had to walk on four paws and that everything was different when it came to the senses. After all most were sharper then when it came to the human senses and you might get overloaded by all he different things you can suddenly hear and smell. She nodded to the man before leaving again, but staying close just in case. She caught a few more rabbits and brought them back to Apollo before taking the lynx a distance away before releasing the animal. A lynx was a predator after all, so it might attack them if she let it go too close to them. Her eyes slowly started to focus again and she looked at lord Freyr, making sure she was fully back before she pushed herself up with the help of the tree. "So, what do you think?" She asked with a slight smile. After all a lot more than this was possible. Animals were formidable when you knew how to use them. Of course there was another way how you could use this, but that was not something she liked doing. You could take over an animal and keep it still while another person killed it, but she hoped she would never need to use that.

THE RISING SUN

Though he was curious as to what it felt like, he was also not that convinced about the fun of her technique. It was very effective, that was for sure. In an environment like the White Wood it was for sure a benefit to be able to catch as many rabbits as she was showing him now. When he went out to hunt though, they were usually with a larger group to hunt bigger animals. He used hunting as a way to relax. Almost like a hobby. If they came back empty-handed, no one would go hungry anyway. So there was less pressure on them to come back with a decent catch. If they did though, he always enjoyed the feeling of euphoria and victory that came with shooting down for example a moose.

With the need for food here though, her way of hunting was clearly the superior one. With his bow and all the good will in the world he would have never caught as much rabbits as she had piled up before him. After a while of no lynx showing up, he suddenly heard how her human body stirred. Apollo turned around and granted her a faint smile. ”I am glad you invited me to come along, Lady Lora. I am surprised by how effective this is”, He replied to her. ”Say, could you track down other targets? Humans, per chance”, He continued. Her display of skill had sparked an idea. With a bit of luck he had found a solution to the problem that was the Ironwood Forest.

It was effective, that was for sure. But she could not help but be a little surprised with his next question. Of course she could track down a human if needed. Especially with the heightened senses of an animal. Humans did try to cover their tracks often, but smell was one of the things which was hard to get rid of. But it was also possible to use a bird to see from above. "I am glad that you did not think it was a waste of time and just Lora is fine my lord," She said. After all he was the one from a high house, while hers was just a small house and she was not even the head. It was also for the fact that they were here with just the two of them and no one was here to hear. "About the tracking of humans. It is possible, scent is one of the easiest to follow, since most animals have a better sense of smell. The use of birds is also possible to track them by sight." And of course animals could be used to fight too, but Lord Freyr had only asked about tracking.

THE RISING SUN
sets the horizon ablaze。

Their earlier conversation about the Ironwood Forest and then the display of her skills as a spiritwalker had made him put one and one together. It could be a very interesting new approach to the problems they were facing with the gangs of criminals hiding in the forest. The challenge was to locate them without them knowing they would send out the garrison to capture them. They always managed to get away long before they arrived. If they could track them down first, unseen, they would have a better chance. Lady Lora, who had mentioned he could just call her by her first name from now on, explained how it was certainly possible. In more than one ways. ”Interesting. I was wondering if a skilled spiritwalker, or multiple, could assist us in tracking down the criminals in the Ironwood Forest. That way, they are not alarmed long before we arrive to arrest them”, He explained his question to her. Maybe they could finally solve that issue once and for all.
