In this very moment, nothing was more important than protecting the Queen, the future Queen and the princess. Three of the most important people to the Kingdom were found in this room, the others in another. Putting them all together would have been simply stupid, like cattle waiting for a predator. No, the decision to split them up had been made purposefully, with the King’s Guard standing to protect Jeran, while Joseph and Samuel would take care of the women.

Joseph grabbed his sword from its hilt, slowly - the metal shimmering in the light as he turned his wrist, feeling the weight of the blade in his hand. His job as a knight, as the King’s Guard, had never truly stopped. As his Hand, Joseph was always by his side, and whenever a single person would raise a hand to the man, he would be there to stop it. The King, to him, was not only the most important man of Avalance - he was his friend. And his family was as good as his own. If he would need to give his life today to protect this family, then the letters for his children were already written.

In their perfect silence, he could hear the footsteps nearing them. Five, maybe six men heading their way, walking quickly. “Three…” Joseph started counting down, his eyes focussed on the door as he readied his stance, feeling the weight of the blade in his arm. “Two…” The footsteps were near now and he heard how they halted in front of the door. A hand was placed upon the door handle and it slowly moved. “One.” With that, he gave the door a kick and sent one of the men flying back, revealing the others.

Five.

Walking away from Faolan, all the while the castle quaked from the explosions within the city, was one of the hardest things she had to do up until now. Quietly she looked over her shoulder again, before he disappeared around a corner. It broke her heart to realise that this might be the last time they saw one another, for neither of them know how this war would end for them. How it would end for the side they were on. Splitting up was difficult, but neccessary. They couldn’t all be in the same room, and thus, she was to be protected in another room, alongside with the queen and the princess.

The hand of the king and the king’s brother were the ones assigned to protect them. Two men she knew they could trust, yet, she could never fully trust anyone anymore after all that happened. Her gaze drifted from Joseph to Samuel, as they stood in front of the door, holding onto their swords. Quietly, she looked to her side, where Manuela and Aldwena were standing. Footsteps were audible outside of the door, closing in on it. The woman dug her nails into the palm of her hand, turning her head back to the door. They were coming.

Three. She took in a deep breath. Two. Once those doors flew open, there was no turning back. Hell would be unleashed upon them, and she could only hope that the two men protecting them would turn out to be the victors. A hand was put on the door handle on the other side, she could see it twitch down only slightly. One. With impact, Joseph kicked the door open, sending one of the men behind it flying back.

Five. Five against two. She could feel herself holding her breath, her back hitting the far end of the room. Did that mean the odds were against them? Her hands found its way over her dress, brushing over the knife attached to her leg underneath it. Basilton had given it to her. Just like he had taught her how to hold one too. And even though she hoped she would never need to use it, it was a reassurance to know it was there if she did.

Five. He could take two. Samuel could take two. But, even then, there would be one guard left. One too many. This was a difference that could mean the end of everyone in this room. By overwhelming one by putting three against him, they could easily kill either him or Samuel. Then, the other would be left with five against one. It would be the end of them. Joseph clenched his jaw as he looked at the men in front of him, cursing Jeran that he hadn’t been able to spare a single other guard for this room. It could’ve meant they would win. Now, it would all fall on their shoulders. “If one of them gets closer,” he warned Costia, whom he would try to protect, “don’t hesitate.” Samuel would protect Manuela and the queen? Well, they would just have to get through them both to get to her.

The first one to step into this room will meet his maker,” Joseph growled as he took a step forward, the sword shimmering in the light as he did. His sword was forged from the best metal up North, with engravings of gold in its Hilt. It combined into a sword worthy of its name, Eclipse. As, in the religion up North, the eclipse was the warning of the end of the world. His Eclipse would mean the end of someone’s world.

Joseph stepped sideways to create distance between himself and Samuel, deciding it was best to split the group of enemies up in two. Three came his way, while two stepped up to Samuel. He assumed they knew very well who he was. Kill the King’s Hand and be another step closer to the throne. He wouldn’t make it easy on them, that much was sure. Two on one side, a third on the other. The third could attack Costia if the other two were to distract Joseph, which meant his attention was split. That was the first step towards defeat.

If one gets closer, don’t hesitate. The words made her look back at Joseph, giving him a short, but firm nod. Those men behind the door, they would not hesitate. Whatever orders their Lady had given them, they would follow up on it. They would kill if she’d asked them to, even without knowing what kind of person they really were. They wouldn’t care, and so should she. But would she be brave enough if it came to it? Sure, she had done it once, when Faolan had stepped forward to trade his life for hers, not wanting him to go through the same thing as she’d gone through. But would she do the same if it was her life on the line?

Her gaze drifted back to the door, to the five men behind it. Joseph’s words did not reach her ears, instead, she just stood there, back against the wall, watching the men enter. Five against two. Even when Joseph and Samuel could fight two men at once, there would always be one left. One that could turn the tables quickly in this room, and it tightened Costia’s chest as the thought that they were screwed crossed her mind.

Three against Joseph, two against Samuel. Costia grasped the knife from under her dress, holding it behind her back. A reassurance. That was all it was. She surely wasn’t going to have to use it, right? The woman tightened her grip on the knife, knowing the possibility that she would have, was larger than she wanted it to be. As she held her breath, waiting for the sounds of metal clashing against metal, she wondered why the kng had left them with only two guards. Three of the most important women of Dragonwatch, left to be protected by two men who should mean the world to him too. His best friend and his brother, and now, they had to fight with the odds not being in their favor.

Joseph had held a sword for longer than most these guys walked the earth, but that did not mean victory was in his grasp just yet. He had the experience, but they had youth. He could not keep up for as long as they would if this would depend on their stamina. He would need to kill them before he would reach the end of his. It was a race against the clock and while Joseph would have liked to say the odds were in his favor, everyone in the room knew they weren’t. If this was to be his end, at least he would take all these bastards down with him. He wasn’t entering a hell without clinging on to their souls.

Two on one side, one on the other. He would need to reflect, block and at the same time, watch the ones on his other side. If he focussed on the two, the one could move over to Costia. If he focussed on the one, the other two would put a blade through his heart. In this moment, he did not see a scenario where he would survive to see the end of the day. But by the Gods, would he make sure that none of these women would share his fate. At least this meant he had to worry about the safety of one less person: himself.

The first one to strike was the one on his own, perhaps to create an opening for the other two. Joseph quickly blocked the attack and preemptively stepped aside, feeling a blade scratch his side as he did. Right decision. He turned his sword, moving the one held by the man, before using his other hand to grab his arm and push him down to the ground, pulling the sword from his hands, hearing it slide over the floor towards the women standing there.

One of the men stepped forward, and the sound of metal clashing against metal boomed through the room. The woman could feel her chest tightening as the others went into the attack too, but Joseph managed to avoid a second attack, the sword barely scraping his side. Costia could feel her grip tighten around the knife, as if it was her only lifeline right now. She wondered whether or not the queen and princess wished they were more useful in this situation too, like she wished she was. Yet, the knife in her hands felt odd, and she knew she would need a lot of luck, were it ever to come to a one-to-one fight with any of these men.

One of the soldiers fell to the ground, letting go of his sword, which proceeded to slide over the floor into their direction. The sword found its end somewhere in the middle. For a moment, all sounds around her seemed to fade, as he gaze shot up to meet that of the soldier. A moment that seemed to last an eternity, even though it was mere seconds as the both of them realised what was going to happen. Do not hesitate. All of the sudden she rushed forward, and so did the soldier, the both of them aiming to grab a hold of the sword first.

Her fingers graced the sword, right before he crashed into her. So close. The impact sent the knife flying out of her other hand, and as she was no match to this man’s strength, he overpowered her easily. Yet, the brunette had one last trick up her sleeve, lifting her knee up with a force to be reckoned with. The man grunted in pain, his grip on her loosening, and soon she found herself scrambling for the sword a second time.

Joseph could not pay attention to what was going on between Costia and the guard, yet he couldn’t leave it alone either. A soldier’s trick was to watch the two men he could now face, while listen to what was going on behind him. Sound alone was enough for him to paint an image, to have an idea of when to turn around and risk his life to help out Costia. He would always keep himself ready to turn around and attack, but for now he had a different matter to deal with.

In stories, fights like these would take what seemed like hours. In reality, it was a few minutes at best. Joseph had learned this the hard way and though he had never experienced a war, he had fought countless battles before. This was just another one of those battles, even if it were to be his last. What he needed to do to keep himself safe, was making sure that they could not triangulate around him. And so, he stepped back once he heard the groan of the man fighting Costia, lessening the distance between himself and her, though it allowed him to watch the two in front of himself. They tried turning around him, which caused him to take a step away again, slowly circling around each other as he kept his balance.

The left one, the older one, attacked and he instantly blocked the attack. By making sure to move with the attack and causing the man to lose his balance, Joseph was able to step back and block the attack from the younger man, after which he took another step sideways, now having the two men between him and Costia, so he could see the third again as well, while his own back was put against the wall. He watched how the man Costia was fighting picked up a sword again and felt his stomach twist, though he knew he couldn’t just barge through these two to protect her.

Another attack. The oldest one stepped forward and attacked, which was easily blocked by Joseph. The younger one took a risk and jumped forward, this time aiming for his leg and before he knew it, Joseph fell down on one knee, feeling the pain shoot through his body. But he wasn’t going to let it end here and he quickly blocked another incoming blow, before using the man’s own speed to turn his sword, make him lose balance for just a moment and instantly lashing out again, this time succeeding. His blade went straight through the man’s stomach.

While it would be seen as a win by the untrained eye, this decision created room for the younger to attack from and he took this opportunity. The younger one stepped aside and slashed his sword against Joseph’s back, who could feel the cut from his shoulders, diagonally down to at least half his back. He fell to his knees, feeling the warm blood run down his back and leg. He wasn’t going to last long in this fight. Not like this.

There was no time to look around and observe her surroundings, to check on how Joseph and Samuel were doing, nor to look back to where Aldwena and Manuela were probably standing. No, her complete attention was with the sword, the rest of the world fading around it. Quickly, the brunette scrambled to her feet, desperately reaching out for the weapon. Yet again, her fingers graced the handle, before it was pushed out of her hold with force.

Her feet were swept from underneath her body, and all the air was knocked out of her lungs once she hit the floor. The woman gasped for air, but the more she tried to breathe in, the more she could feel her chest tightening. It was then that the world started slowing down around her, as her mind lingered to a much more darker place. One she'd been trying to forget. No. Not now. Desperately, she tried to find something to hold onto, to anchor her to this moment, but all her fingers found was the cold floor. A sense of numbness started spreading through her chest. Senseless. As if she wasn't in the here and now.

Everything came rushing back when an explosion went off nearby in the city. The sounds of everyone around her fighting, swords clashing against swords and pained grunts from the men being hit all flushing back into her ears. And then her fingers found her anchor. The knife. The knife Basilton had given her, the knife she'd dropped earlier. It's metal reflecting the light from a nearby window, as she tightened her grip around it. It was now or never. Live or die.

Before she could process it herself, she was up on her feet once more. By the time she got to the man, he had already picked up his sword. He turned around, in one smooth movement swinging the knife in her direction. There was no turning back now. The sword sliced into her side, but not before her knife found its way into his chest. Her face paled, but so did his. The both of them stumbled, but it was him that fell to the floor first, the light in his eyes fading.

Long Live the Queen

In the midst of chaos, the queen remained largely untouched. She avoided the fighting men, jumping sideways when Costia moved for the dagger. The panic was clear in her eyes as she tried to watch her daughter above all, slowly moving towards the sword of the man that had been attacked by Joseph. She knew that Joseph and Costia could not fight anymore, but if she could grab the sword, at least she could try to distract someone or even attack them from behind.

Aldwena bent down to grab the blade and from there, things moved quickly. The hand of the man whom she had presumed dead grabbed her wrist and as their eyes met. With his last remaining strength, the man pushed his blade into her chest as he whispered:

"Long live the Queen."

And suddenly, it all went by so fast. The soldier’s minute, someone had once called it. There was one minute in every fight that determined the end. A single mistake, an opponent that responded to it well. An outside source that could influence a fight and entirely change its course. The latter was true today and would change the fight that was still undetermined, right up until that soldier’s minute.

Distracted by Costia, Joseph didn’t notice that the man on the ground was not quite dead yet. While his end was already decided, he wasn't going to go down without a fight. While Joseph tried to force himself up to fight the remaining man, he watched how the Queen’s wrist was grabbed. Everything moved in slow motion for just a second and Joseph knew he couldn’t allow himself one more mistake.

No!” he yelled and he could hear the man behind him gasp for air. As the blade went into the queen’s chest, Joseph turned around and sliced the neck of the man behind him, taking advantage of the distraction. He fell down on his knees again, too weak to fight, but taking the man down with him. He heard how the queen let out his last breath, how the man whispered those words to her. How the remaining man gurgled for air, his head soon dropping on the floor.

Long live the Queen.

And long shall she live, in their memories. For without the Queen, only the King remained. And Joseph couldn’t help but feel his hope for their land drip away as quick as the blood that was coming down from his leg and back. And while he wanted to turn around to help Manuela, Costia… He could feel himself falling into darkness.

Hesitation would get her killed. Giving up would get her killed. So, in the heat of the moment, she jumped forward, knowing that there was no way she could avoid the sword being swung at her, but at least she could change their odds in their advantage. The knife found its way into his chest, and mere seconds after that she could feel pain was over her. As the sword hit her side, her face paled and tears formed in the corners of her eyes. She knew from the way the life started fading from his eyes that she had won this fight, but at what cost?

The woman stumbled, pulling the knife from his chest, before she too fell to her knees. With one hand still tightly holding onto the knife, and the other reaching for her side, she took deep and heavy breaths. She had won, but the victory felt nothing like the kind when her eyes lifted from her side and found the queen standing next to one of the fallen soldiers. It was at that moment that her heart dropped, when suddenly the man who was presumed to be dead reached up for her arm. The scream that readied itself in her chest never found its way over her lips. It was already too late.

Long live the queen.

Her heart broke at the sight of the queen, her once bright and caring eyes turning dull as she sank down next to the soldier, a knife plunged in her chest. Everything in her screamed for her to get up and help, but her body never made a move. Incapable. Exhausted. A silence washed over them as the last soldier fell, leaving them as victors of this battle. But was it really a victory when you’d lost so much?

Costia sunk further to the ground, rolling onto her back. As she closed her eyes, a tear made its way down her cheeks. The queen was dead. Aldwena would never see the day of light again, and she hadn’t been allowed to say goodbye to the ones she cared for more than anyone else. Her children. And they would never be able to see their mother smile, nor would they be able to fall into her arms for comfort. She would never be able to witness her son’s wedding. If there was ever going to be one.

Tightly, the woman held onto her side, feeling the blood seep from the wound. Yet, she didn’t feel the urge to get back up, nor the energy. Her blue eyes opened once more and all she did was stare at the ceiling, praying to whatever god was out there that Faolan would get out of this alive and safe. She couldn’t lose him. Not him too.
