THE RISING SUN
sets the horizon ablaze。

As Warden of the North, he was responsible for all people living between the borders of the Highlands. Caer Scion served as both the capital of the North and his seat of power. From time to time though, he visited the other Houses in person. Communication through ravens was great, but not sufficient enough. He thought it was important to speak with the current rulers of the Houses in person every now and then. Just to make sure all was running smoothly. They might not live in the capital itself, but that did not mean he did not think of them as his people. He wanted them to live prosperous lives. And aside from that, he valued their opinions and feedback on his rule as well.

It was for that reason he had sent a raven to House Skarsgård. The Head of House had been present on his coronation, but after that, they had only seen each other once more. It was well over a year ago he had last spoken to Lady Freyja in person. Therefore he had decided to visit her at her castle-seat. The trip there would be long and the harsh weather conditions would not make it easy either. But it was an effort he was determined to make for her and her kin. Slowly he was working on his plans, and he would need all the support he could get. That included that of House Skarsgård as well.

His horse was clearly tired after the long march to the White Wood. The four other horses showed signs of fatigue too. Luckily, the castle was now in sight. He turned around to check upon his guards. They were all hardened Northerners, but he wanted to make sure they were still fine. It seemed like all was well. The one on his right was wielding a spear, with at the top a blue flag with the sigil of House Freyr. Their arrival was announced, so the guards on the castle wall were already expecting them. By the time they got to the gate, it was already opened wide. Apollo pulled down the black cloth that had been covering his face, as a protection against the cold. His horse slowed down in time to stop where it was supposed to, and he patiently waited for the invitation to dismount.

the world was on fire and
no one could save me but you
She had received a raven from the Warden of the North, asking if it was possible he could visit her castle any time soon so that they could talk in person. Their last meeting had been a year ago now and even though they had kept in touch through letters, meeting someone in person was usually a better way to keep alliances strong. As head of her house, she didn’t want any trouble with the ruling house of the Highlands, not over nothing at least. Lord Freyr hadn’t done anything to upset her house at this point, so a meeting at her castle would be just fine.
Today had to be the day that he reached her castle after quite a long and cold trip from west to east. Her guards had seen him coming and the gates were opened as he and his guards arrived at the castle. The courtyard was, other than some snow, mostly empty. A couple of stableboys came running up to them to hold onto the horses so they could get off. The red-haired lady was the notable figure around, waiting with her hands behind her back and a little smile on her delicate face. Her skin was as pale as the snow itself and her eyes as blue as the ocean. A thick wolf fur was draped around her shoulders to keep her warm, her cloack neatly closed up to keep the cold from breaching the fabric of her clothes. Freyja had made her way outside once one of her guards had noted her that Lord Freyr was almost here and now she waited until he had come off his horse to greet him. None of her other red-haired family members were around. In here, they had to survive and she was pretty much the only political figure of the bunch. Her fiancé wasn’t around either, she knew how he hated sweet talks and business, so she had ensured him he could just do his thing in the forest. Tyrr wasn’t the most subtle man and she always took his wishes into account, what meant doing meetings like this on her own. She had gotten used to it after the years.

THE RISING SUN
sets the horizon ablaze。

For two years now he had followed in the footsteps of his late father. Lord Mercury had ruled these lands with an iron fist, but the people had been content. There had never been any major issues. No rebellions, no notable protests. His reign had been more peaceful than Apollo intended to rule though. Soon enough, his plans would be set in motion. He only had one goal in life, and it was to rule all of Avalance. As the rightful heir to the throne he had a better claim than the usurpers that currently occupied Dragonwatch. To achieve that goal, he needed allies. He knew that the loyalty of the Northerners was to house Freyr. But he needed to make sure that they would stay loyal to him personally, after he had taken over from his father.

It was as much a game of politics as it was a matter of who had the better army. With the Glade in between them and the Crownlands, he would first need to conquer those lands before he could march on. And with the Evergreen loyal to the King, he had to make sure they weren’t attacked in the flank unexpectedly. And on top of that, there was House Illeon. Their rivals would wait until most of the work was done, to come out of hiding like rats, looking for scraps. When he made his move, they would have to move fast. And for that, he needed all the Houses, all his banner-men, to join him in his cause.

That included House Skarsgård. From what he remembered, they were pure Highlanders. Fierce and independent people, who only needed their own strength and skills to survive the harsh winters. It made them strong, but also unreliable. If he could not offer them support, they would never help him in return. He had to hope they would remain loyal, and answer the call if he summoned them and their men to join his army.

All would depend on the conversation he was about to have. When the stable-boy grabbed the reins of his horse, he dismounted the stallion. He straightened the black bear fur that was wrapped around him to keep him warm. Once his guards had formed a line behind him, he waited until the one with the banner would announce his arrival officially. ”Lord Apollo Freyr, Head of House Freyr, Warden of the North”, The man said loud and clear. In return, the guard behind the red-head did the same. ”Lady Freyja Skarsgård, Head of House Skarsgård”, He sounded. With that, Apollo stepped forward, his pale gaze meeting that of Lady Freyja respectfully.

Freyja looked up at the sky while she waited for the Warden of the North to make his appearance in her courtyard. The clouds were grey and the sun had been hiding behind them all day now, not making the temperatures anything close to nice. She could see they had some pretty bad weather coming up, even in summer the northern lands weren’t holding back on their inhabitants. The lord was lucky he had reached the castle today and not tomorrow. He could sit by the fireplace instead of camping in the snowy woods while there was a storm swirling around his head.
The gates were opened and her blue eyes were drawn to the men on horses that entered the castle grounds. Some of the stable-boys came running up to hold the horses and bring them to the stables, where they would be taken care of completely. They looked tired and she assumed the Lord himself would be too. The White Woods didn’t really have comfortable paths to travel on and it was easy to get lost in the sea of trees. She watched how the men dismounted their horses and looked at the man that announced his arrival. Once both their names had been announced, the young man stepped forwards towards her. She flashed him a warm smile as she locked her blue eyes in his pale ones. ”Welcome, Lord Freyr,” she then spoke up first, greeting him, “it is my pleasure to have you here in our castle.”  She had never been good at these kinds of things and she rather wanted it all to be over, but she probably just had to get used to his presence. It was just going to be a friendly meeting, nothing else.

For way too long, the North had been bullied by the Southerners. The false King sitting on the throne had barely visited these parts of his kingdom. Then how could he know what was best for the people living here? Not that they needed any form of support from that fool. They could perfectly manage on their own. And that was exactly why he would try to declare independency of the Highlands. It was a plan that had many parts, involved a lot of people and would come with countless risks. If he managed to pull it off, the North would finally be free. No more taxes to the King, no more price limits on their trade. It was a dream, but a tangible one. Even if it took him a few more years for it to come together.

Every decision he made, was done with that plan in the back of his mind. He worked towards his goal. This visit to House Skarsgård was part of that as well. He knew they were not high in numbers here, but they were his people nonetheless. And he needed their support. The red-head smiled warmly as she greeted him. ”Thank you, my Lady. I am grateful for your hospitality”, He replied with a slight bow of his head. ”I hope the day has been treating you well”, He added. He was here to learn about the developments in her territory, and that included asking about the well-being of herself and her people.

The Skarsgards had been known for trading with the people from the south pretty often. After all, a lot of the cities in the north fended for themselves. They had to offer pelts, bones which were made into weapons and other things they gained from the White Woods. The southern cities were up for making a good deal, whilst the northern cities usually had enough of those things already. The habit of having connections with the south was a little controversial to say the least. Yet Freyja intended to keep up the good work so that they were able to trade for spices and other foods than meat from the south. Right now she wasn’t dealing with someone from a different region, but her own High Lord. She had placed a smile on her face while she watched him walk up to her. The red-haired lady nodded at his words and hummed at his question. ”Yeah, so far so good. May I invite you inside? It looks like we have some bad weather coming up,” she said, nodding at the dark clouds above the forest. A chilly wind made its way over the courtyard, which made her shiver under the thick clothes she was wearing.

His dream of an independent North could only happen if the North was united. He needed all the houses to support him once he declared himself King of the North. It would be a time of struggle for all of them. The borders would close off, inevitably. That meant no trade for a while. He knew a lot of smaller cities depended on trading with the Glade and the Evergreen for their survival. But he knew that if he managed to maintain a grip on that claim, it would all be for the better later on. Then they could open the trade routes again, on their own terms this time.

It would take a while to win the trust of the other houses though. A conquest that started with house Skarsgård. When Lady Freyja mentioned the bad weather, he looked behind him, to the dark clouds gathering above the forest. ”I certainly don’t want to be outside when that storm hits”, He said amused as he turned back to her. ”I trust my guards can find shelter in your barracks as well?” He added, motioning to the men behind him. He was quite sure they would appreciate a warm fire and some food as well.

The horses had been restless this morning, one of the many signs that bad weather was coming their way. She had seen the threatening, dark clouds above the White Woods and mentioned to their guest that they should go inside before the storm hitted them. He followed her gaze and agreed. Freyja nodded at his question and motioned one of her servants to step forward. ”She’ll show them where they can rest and get them a fire going.” The maiden flashed the man a smile and told them that they could come with her. Freyja looked how their horses were taken to the stables and then looked back at the High Lord himself. ”If you would follow me,” she calmly said and turned around. The big, wooden doors were held open for them and she stepped inside. Torches were burning in the stone hallways and casted funny shadows upon the many animal heads, furs and other things that had been hung up there over the years. Freyja loosend up the thick fur around her neck a little now that they were inside and walked through the smaller castle. He would probably think it was small, compared to his, but it still was a decent sized one with thick walls and as few windows as possible to keep the cold out.

With some family ties to the Glade, he expected at least some support from certain houses there. That didn’t mean that he could slack on his plans. His troops had to be combat ready and prepared for war. His Small Council had to make the proper preparations to bridge the period of struggle that would hit them once he had sent his message to the King. Aside from that, the Highlands had to be ready to defend themselves, if the current false ruler of Avalance decided to march North. Though he didn’t expect him to do so. He hadn’t made any movement towards his soon-to-be kingdom for a long while. Though he knew expectations could be dangerous, and he would not make the mistake of not being prepared for it, he doubted the man would march his armies to territory unfamiliar to him.

The most logical response would be to cut them off of trades completely and then wait until he went down to Dragonwatch himself with his troops to solidify his claim. It was a huge risk, but this was just a small move on the chessboard that was his life. Ever since he was born, he had prepared for this. And now he was ready to bring it all together and get everyone in position. Hopefully he could count on house Skarsgård. Hence why this conversation would be of utmost importance. Apollo followed the Lady inside, glad to leave the bad weather behind.

The castle was not nearly as elegant as his was, but it was a dwelling that fitted perfectly in an area like the White Wood. It was on point even in the smallest of details. The decorations on the walls, the torches scattered around, the weapons leaning against their standards, some banners with the sigil of the house placed strategically. It wasn’t impressive, but it did give a pleasant vibe.

Freyja watched how one of her handmaidens brought the guards to where they could warm up and rest from the journey they had made. She asked the Lord to come with her and led him into the small castle. The castle wasn’t too big and they quickly made their way through the hallways. She brought the man to a cosier room. A fire was already burning and casted long shadows upon the walls. Freyja briefly smiled at him and entered the room first, waiting for him to join her inside. It looked like a living room, with couches and a table in between them. She always used this room for receiving business partners. Some didn’t came further than the big hall with the table of her and her advisors, but for the High Lord of the Highlands she of course would made a exception. Besides, he had traveled all this way and she wanted him to be as comfortable as possible.
”Please, sit, my Lord,” she smiled and made a gesture towards the couches, ”and make yourself at home for as young as you’re staying in my castle.” She briefly eyed the room and shedded herself from the wolf fur coat she had been wearing outside. In here, it was way too warm for coats. She neatly hung it over the back of her couch and rested her hand on the back of it, watching her guest. ”Can I get you anything to drink or eat after such a rough journey?” The White Woods weren’t the easiest grounds to cross and she knew that better than anyone.

Most larger dwellings in the Highlands had kind of the same look and feel to them. First of all they had to serve as protection against the cold, especially in winter. Therefore the materials used and the way the rooms were connected or placed was all with that goal in mind. The more important places, where the people spent their time during the day, were usually located in the centre of the building. The closer to the kitchen, the better. At least in Caer Scion, the cooking fires burned throughout the day and most part of the night as well. In winter, the walls emitted a pleasant warmth that made the cold more bearable.

The decorations in the room were not only for pleasing the eye. The thick furs helped to keep the cold from seeping in through the cracks in the wall too. It meant that wherever he visited, he always felt like he was in a familiar place. When Lady Freyja invited him to sit down and make himself comfortable, he did exactly that. He took of his warm fur and coat, putting them over the back of the couch and making himself a little warm nest to sit in. ”Then for the time of my visit, please address me as Apollo. In my home they rarely call me Lord”, He said with a faint smile. Only when outsiders were present, his family would use his proper title. Inviting her to do the same, would hopefully create a friendly connection that would make the upcoming conversation a bit easier.

”A drink would be nice”, He nodded, relaxing into the soft cushions of the couch a bit. His muscles were sore after spending so long in the saddle, and sleeping on the ground hadn’t been contributory to his back pain. For a minute he felt like an old man, complaining about the harsh conditions. He admonished himself strictly. He was lucky enough to be as privileged as he was, and have the opportunity to be here. ”Forgive me my curiosity, but I would like to hear about the developments since our last letter”, He then asked. That was the official reason why he was here after all.

Freyja had never been to the capital of the north before but from what she had heard the castle there was way bigger and far more intimidating than her own. Hers was smaller but probably also easier to defend, not that they really had to at this point. They only had to shield themselves from the cold the north blew their way. The thick furs that were placed against the walls held the cold outside and thus had a function other than being decorative. They were also trophies from their hunting, to show people how big the animals were that they had taken down as a family. Bears, wolves, big deer species, she had seen them all being dragged into the castle.
The red-haired Lady flashed him a smile once he said she should address him as Apollo instead of Lord. She hummed a little. ”Alright, Apollo,” she smiled and took in a deep breath once she turned away from him to see if there was anything to drink in here. It was a good moment in which she could hide her nervousness because she really felt her stomach turning over every second right now. She met with people like him every single day, but having a High Lord walking around in your castle made you feel a little on edge.
He wanted a drink and she nodded, looking at what they had in store. ”Wine, whiskey, ale? We pretty much have everything,” she said while looking over her shoulder. She poured him a drink and walked back to the couches, handing him his glass before taking a seat on the other couch, making herself comfortable there and taking a little sip from her drink to ease herself. He asked about the developments since their last letter. Freyja slowly nodded and lowered her glass. ”The forest still provides us from whatever we need, though we have had some strong competition lately.” Thinks hadn’t really been all roses between House Skarsgård and House Corbin. They had to share the same forest to hunt and she knew Lord Rhysand wasn’t too pleased about that, something that worried her since they were only a small house in the northern region.

Trained by both his parents and the knight he had squired for, he knew all about protocol. He followed it meticulously too. When someone breached it, not following the general courtesies expected in the vicinity of a High Lord, he could get pretty annoyed. Losing respect for the other person quickly. Only with children he was a bit softer. That didn’t mean though that he didn’t know when it was time to leave protocol behind either. She had welcomed him properly and had shown him she knew well enough which rules to play by. So he decided to make the mood a bit more familiar by inviting her to address him with his first name. An offer she took on with a smile.

”Some wine would be great”, He replied. Though most Northerners preferred ale, he had been practically raised with wine. He had his mother to blame for that one. He accepted the glass and nipped from it before asking her about the current state of affairs. When she mentioned strong competition, he frowned slightly. ”Strong competition?” He asked, encouraging her to go on. He had a suspicion on what she meant, though he wanted to hear it from her rather than putting the words in her mouth and drawing conclusions.

Freyja had never been prepared for ruling a house, but her father had made her into the proper lady she was now. She knew how to welcome people like Apollo and also knew the protocol back and forth. The red-haired Lady was more like her mother, always polite and lady-like, while her siblings kept themselves busy with hunting and such. Now that she had welcomed him in her castle he asked her to address him with his first name, which was fine for her. It was always good once they decided to leave the formalities behind, it meant they were at ease.
He decided to go for some wine and she poured them both a glass of the red liquid. She walked back over to him and handed him the glass before sitting down on the other couch. Once she mentioned having strong competition, she had caught his attention. Freyja softly hummed as she took a sip from her red wine. ”House Corbin has been hunting on our grounds, trying to thwart us wherever they can.” Her voice made clear she wasn’t happy about it, though she doubted anyone would in a situation like this one. Of course, there was a reason why Rhysand was working against her and she knew why.

Being of a high rank certainly caused him to be in interesting situation. The observations he made in people’s non-verbal communication was at times quite amusing. Especially when they really wanted to make a good impression but failed miserably because they weren’t all too educated in courtesies like he was. Their words were often weirdly chosen and their non-verbals indicated they were nervous and perhaps a bit baffled by his presence. None such signals were visible with Lady Skarsgård. Though he could tell she was a bit nervous. Not really by his status, but perhaps more what his presence here at her castle could mean. If she was still loyal to his House and his cause, then she had nothing to fear though.

Though her slight nervousness could be blamed on the confession she made now. She sounded as if her House was in trouble, though they hadn’t contacted Caer Scion yet. Perhaps because they wanted to solve it themselves. He was here now though, so he wanted to know if he could be of assistance. Solving problems between Houses was part of his job after all. When she mentioned House Corbin hunting on her territory, he hummed softly. This new Lord seemed to become a problem rather quick after his ascension. ”I am yet to meet the new Lord Corbin”, He admitted. ”Though I will be visiting him soon. Trust I will speak to him about it. I don’t want internal struggles in the Highlands”, He said to her, partly as a hidden warning too. After winter he wanted to declare the North independent. That couldn’t work if the Highlands were divided, and he would not tolerate anyone standing in the way of his plans.

the world was on fire and

She had woken up this morning with a nervous feeling in the pit of her stomach. Everything had to go well today, she had to speak to Lord Freyr about certain matters that had been keeping her awake at night, matters that were threatening her House. It was her job to keep it thriving and House Corbin was making her job unnecessary difficult at this point, which was kind of annoying her by now. She had made certain choices and Rhysand clearly didn’t agree with them. Showing his dislike in this way was childish, to say the least.
Freyja eyed the man before taking a sip of her wine. She needed it to relax some more and so she could get the words out eventually. They were only a small house, yet they were people from the north as well, a small house that had been along for generations on end. The Skarsgård family had made quite the name for themselves by surviving on their own all this time. They had always been loyal to the Highlands but they were also known by their many trading alliances with the south, something she was afraid was going to work against them this time. Apollo admitted he hadn’t met the new Lord Corbin yet, on which she slowly nodded. She had. Her blue eyes had been watching the dancing flames in the fireplace, now they slowly went back to the High Lord as he spoke. ”I hope you can talk some sense in him. What he’s doing now won’t benefit the relationship between House Skarsgård and House Corbin,” she stated. She wouldn’t accept him hunting on their grounds and him trying to suppress her house. ”I might know the reason behind the actions of Lord Corbin, though,” she added after a brief silence.

Considering the circumstances of Lord Corbin’s corronation and the fact that he had not bothered to wait until he could attend the funeral, he already had some prejudice towards the new Lord. Word had gotten to him that they had burned the body of the man too, which was highly inappropriate. Now the man would never know rest, as his soul could not ascend to the heavenly realm of Yunuen without the sacrifice of his corpse to the earth. And now, with this news, he felt like there was just another reason to dislike Lord Rhysand. Of course he would try to give him the benefit of the doubt. After all, he ruled Aeldun, and Apollo would need his troops to reinforce his army.

That didn’t mean he would forsake his duty to guard peace in the Highlands. ”Justice will be served to those deserving of punishment”, He said. House Skarsgård and House Corbin had shared the White Woods in peace for long enough to be aware of the borders by now. Crossing them was prohibited and he would see to it that those laws were followed. Again, she managed to spark his interest. ”Is that so?” He asked, again prodding her to share what she knew. It would prepare him all the better for his next visit.

the world was on fire and

Her blue eyes found their way back to Apollo when he ensured her justice would be served to those deserving of punishment. An interesting statement. She wondered if Rhysand would be punished for the mistakes he had made in his short reign and what those possible punishments could even be for a lord of a common house. It was easy to overshadow a smaller house like the Skarsgårds, though it was everything but fair to do so. Her family wasn’t happy with the sudden crossing of borders either. Their hard work seemed for nothing once they came back to check on their traps and they were raided by others already. Her sisters and betrothed went into those woods every single day and risked their lives in the freezing cold to provide for their house. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became.
She knew why the new Lord Corbin was doing this. Freyja knew she had his undivided interest at this point and she nodded, looking down at her wine before she said the words. ”I refused his hand in marriage,” she said, slowly looking up at her High Lord again. Word had spread she had gotten engaged to a man without lands or title. She had chosen a Tyrr over Rhysand and after that moment everything had begun.

THE RISING SUN
sets the horizon ablaze。

Again, his comment was a hidden warning. Justice would be served to those deserving of punishment. In the Highlands, they were fair and just. Only punishing people that were proven to be guilty. It was the severity of the punishment that had earned them the nickname of savages. It meant that no one would get away with activities they shouldn’t get away with. Like how House Corbin was hunting on territory that didn’t belong to them. It also meant that House Skarsgård would be brought to justice if they turned out to be more loyal to their southern allies than to his House. For now it didn’t depend where his own preference went to. He needed a unified North and that could only happen if he could solve this problem between two of the Houses under his command.

Lady Freyja apparently had an explanation for Lord Rhysand’s behaviour. He, for one, was very eager to know what that reason was exactly. He was immediately lost in thoughts when the redhead explained to him that it had to do with her refusing his hand in marriage. He mindlessly took another sip of the glass. ”This was after you got engaged to Tyrr Larsson, yes?” He asked her, to make sure that he was informed correctly. Proposing to a woman that was already engaged, was again a highly inappropriate move. It didn’t matter her husband-to-be had no lands of titles, a woman that was already promised to someone, was not to be courted.

Freyja was smart enough to pick up the hidden warning he had given her. She understood why he had to, quarreling between the houses of the north was the last he could use right now. Freyja knew about his ambitions and didn’t really want to be on his bad side, which would be bad for her house. Though she also had to keep in mind that their trade to the south was also very important, something which might become a problem, especially with the Corbins acting like this, wanting to suppress them. Apollo asked if his proposal was before or after she had gotten engaged to Tyrr. Freyja was silent for a second, knowing the answer already and thinking if it would influence what he was going to say next. She hoped not. ”Before, officially” she said as she looked at the Lord, ”but I knew I wanted to accept Tyrr’s hand in marriage already, so I refused his offer, which made him very angry, I believe.” She had been in love with the rough northern man already and for no second she had thought of marrying a Lord instead of the love of her life.
