Desert moon light the way
Like a lamp in the lonely night
There was nowhere for her to go. She had almost killed herself by wandering into the desert, and from that day on, she knew that she had to find a way to survive in Asherah. Until she had come up with a better plan. Not that there had been a plan in the first place. She shouldn’t have left the mansion, as she had been sleeping in a proper bed and had been fed proper meals. Now she was out on the streets, with nowhere to go, fearfully looking over her shoulder every time she heard footsteps nearing her. Every day could be her last. She could either starve, fall into the wrong hands again, or perhaps she would end the misery herself. Though she was fairly sure she wasn’t brave enough to do the latter. She had never really been very brave.
The treacherous streets of the lesser parts of Asherah were filled with people like her, though there were many that had some kind of roof above their head. She had nothing, only the ripped up dress she was wearing at this very moment. A loud voice scared her up, and she quickly turned around and headed off into the other direction. She didn’t want any trouble, and it was clear that the people didn’t want a stranger roaming around their neighborhood. She would have to find another place to stay the night. Her hand briefly rested against the little rounding in her belly. Another day she would stay hungry.

“Come on, Safiya,” Mira called out towards the dark-haired child. She had stayed back in order to linger at one of the market stalls again, staring at the pretty stones that they both knew they couldn’t afford. Ever since Kraken’s Lair, the two of them had become inseparable. Saf’s mother had not made it through the horrid journey from Nirax to Avalance, perishing on the seventh day. The young girl had told Mira bits and pieces about her mother, but it was clear that it still hurt to talk about her. So, she just let it be.

The girl caught up to her, reaching for Mira’s hand. The older woman gave her an encouraging squeeze. “I told you not to wander,” she said, to which Saf muttered a quiet ‘sorry’. The basket she was holding gently swayed along with every step. There wasn’t much inside, but it would be enough to keep the both of them alive for another day. But when she looked up and saw the woman at the other end of the street, both the basket and its contents went falling to the floor. A handful of fruits and a bag full of rice spilled over the dusty streets of Asherah, causing Safiya to bend down and grab whatever she could. Mira couldn’t bring herself to care about any of it, she only saw that one thing.

Desert moon light the way
Like a lamp in the lonely night
A soft, hoarse sound left her throat as she quietly hummed a tune. She had no idea where her feet would bring her today. Perhaps somewhere she could find cover from the burning sun, or maybe somewhere she would be able to drink fresh water from the river. If she was lucky, she would find herself some scraps that had been thrown away by other people, but it seemed like she wasn’t welcome to wander around in this neighborhood. She kept herself busy by humming the tune her mother had always sang for her. It made her think of home. A home she would never see again, she knew.
“River, oh river,” she sang, the words rolling over her lips in a quiet whisper. She didn’t want anyone to hear. Only she herself. ”Flow gently for me,” she continued, hearing how raw her soft voice sounded. A soft breath escaped her mouth, but her attention was drawn when she suddenly heard her name. Her heart dropped, and within a second, she recognized the voice. The young woman quickly turned around, her brown eyes wide open as she looked at the woman that was on the other end of the street. ”Mira?” she gasped, not sure if what she was seeing was real. She wanted to pinch herself, but she stood there, frozen in time. And then, she crossed the street, moving over to her older sister. ”Mira!” she repeated, louder this time, knowing that this was real. She was alive. She was here. A sob left her mouth as she wrapped her arms around her sister, feeling how her hands were trembling as she held onto her.

Mira couldn’t believe her eyes when she noticed the woman on the opposite side of the street. Part of her refused to acknowledge that this was something real. She hadn’t been eating enough lately, had been exposed to the hot sun for a long time, she hadn’t had fresh water in a while. This had to be some kind of illusion, but it wasn’t. She saw her own sister, right there. After months of looking for her, she was standing right in front of her.

Zahra was the first to breach the distance between them, hurrying her way. Mira opened her arms for the smaller woman, engulfing her in a tight embrace. She took in a shaky breath as she nuzzled her face into the other woman’s hair and a rush of happiness washed over her when she noticed that her sister still smelled of home. “Zahra,” she softly whispered. A lump formed in her throat as she pulled back, cupping her sister’s face. Her thumb stroked over her cheekbone as she checked to see if her baby sister was okay. “I’ve been looking all over for you,” she said, shaking her head a little. Safiya was looking up at them with a confused look in her eyes, but Mira could only focus on the woman in front of her. “I knew you were out there somewhere.” All this time, she had refused to believe that her sister had perished like so many others had.

Desert moon light the way

For a split second, she was afraid that it had been someone else that had recognized her. That somehow, one of the other girls was out here, perhaps with him. There was nobody in these lands that knew her name other than them, after all. But then she recognized her voice, and when she turned around, she saw the familiar face of her older sister. She still looked the same, maybe a little less healthy than what she had looked back home. But it was still her sister. Zahra questioned her own eyes for a moment, not sure whether this was real or if she was seeing what she wanted to see. She knew what lack of food and water could do to someone. On the ship, she had heard many people that saw things that weren’t really there. She could only hope she wasn’t going mad.
She rushed over to the other side of the street, making a soft sound as she found her way into her sister’s embrace. Her fingers lightly held onto the fabric of Mira’s clothes, as if she was afraid that she would be taken away again now that she finally had her back. By now, the smaller brunette was softly sniffling. When her sister pulled back, cupping her face, a few tears rolled down over her filthy cheek. ”I missed you so much,” she said, her voice quite hoarse as more tears of joy escaped from her eyes. Zahra took in a few shaky breaths, trying to keep herself from crying too much. They were still out on the street, after all. ”I thought I’d lost you!” she said, her voice raw from the many emotions she was feeling. But she was here now. And nobody would ever separate them again. No slave trader. Not even Nasir.

For months Mira had been looking for her sister. She had scoured Riverhold for a trace of Zahra, asking around for her to anyone who wanted to listen. But no one knew of her. In due time, however, she found someone who informed her that a slave trader’s vessel had recently travelled from Kraken’s Lair to Asherah, which was apparently the utmost southern province of this wretched country. It hadn’t been easy, but she had managed to gather enough coin to get both Safiya and her a place on a ship towards Ashax.

Holding her long lost sister in her arms after all these months felt better than anything. She was washed over with a new influx of hope and happiness. Zahra hadn’t perished the way so many others had on board of the slaver’s ship. Mira had known she hadn’t; she would have known if her baby sister had been gone. The older woman smiled as she held her sister’s face in her hands, brushing away her tears with a rough, calloused thumb. “I missed you too,” she softly said, still in disbelief. Mira took a deep breath, looking over at the little girl beside her. “Zahra, this is Safiya. We met aboard the slavers’ ship. Safiya, this is Zahra, my sister.” The young girl nodded at Zahra, weakly smiling. “Hi there,” she softly said, holding up her hand in greeting.

A part of her had always held onto the idea of finding back her sister one day. She knew that hoping to ever return home would be naive, even for her. But her sister could be out here, somewhere. Zahra would never have enough money to sail back to where she came from, and neither would she trust the men she would have to join, which meant she was stuck here. Everything had been quite hopeless, to say the least, right up until the moment she had somehow found her sister again. There was a spark there, a little spark of hope that everything would be alright now that they had each other again.
The brunette softly sniffled as Mira brushed her rough thumb over her face, removing the salty tears that way. The corner of her mouth briefly pulled up when she smiled, before following the gaze of her older sister towards the little girl that was with her. Apparently, the two of them had met at the slavers’ ship. ”Hey, Safiya,” she greeted the girl, flashing her a faint smile. The sight of the young girl reminded her to something else. ”Mira, I, I’m,” she started, not knowing how to get the words out. She had never said them out loud, not to anyone. Zahra swallowed, reaching down with her slender hand, resting it against the thin fabric of her white gown, down at the rounding in her belly. She had grown significantly skinnier once she had ran off, and only that part of her body had continued to grow.

People might have called her delusional for clinging onto the idea that her sister had still been alive. Especially after she had seen what had happened to countless people on board of the ship. People perished from starvation, dehydration, infection, heat stroke, and at the hand of the vicious crew members. But she had seen Zahra last in Nirax, alive and relatively well, so she refused to believe that she was among those countless people that had lost their lives on board.

And against all odds, she had found her sister back, here at the other end of the world. It was almost too good to be true, and part of her feared that she was truly growing delusional now. But when she wrapped her arms around Zahra, she knew that she was truly here. Safiya greeted Zahra, not really knowing what to make of all this. To give herself something to do, the young girl started picking up the fruits that Mira had dropped seconds before. Her expression grew a little more troubled when Zahra uttered a half-sentence, protectively laying a hand on her belly. Mira didn’t need any more words to know what was going on. “Did they… on the ship?” she inquired, shaking her head a little. She doubted that this had been voluntary, and the mere thought of anyone laying their hands on her little sister made her furious.
