”Can you get Keaton for me?” she asked the nearest guard, who nodded at her and wandered off, looking for the advisor who’s presence she had just requested. Freyja briefly watched the guard leave, before turning around again and picking up the large piece of paper she had found. The longer she was in the Last Hearth, the more she got to know the place. Sometimes, she randomly found letters, maps, other documents of value. They all helped her, as she knew she had a long way to go before she could proudly call herself Lady of the Last Hearth. She was still learning how to rule a city. She was still trying to figure the city out.
The red-haired woman made her way over to one of the rooms that were used for meeting up with her advisors. She closed the door behind her, walking over to the large table in the middle of the room. Freyja cleared her throat, putting the paper down on the table, before turning around and looking out over the stunning view she had from here. Being a Lady meant that you had to live up to many expectations, and one of those was keeping her city safe. Which was going to be the reason behind the conversation that was ahead of her.

The castle his mistress now inhabited was intriguing to say the least. Keaton had wandered through the countless of cold halls days on end, making sure he knew every possible escape route, every single double wall. Now, however, he sat quietly in his sitting room, the fire roaring and warming his cold bones. He wasn't of the Highlands and wasn't sure he could ever adapt to the biting cold as the Northerners seemed to be able to, even after years the cold was still biting and the uncomfortable stiffness didn't seem to go away.
Licking his index finger he turned the page of yet another document that had been passed onto him for examination.
Trade, safety and security, the daily topics on the agenda of the Lady Skarsgård and therefore of Keaton’s.
Of course he adored the topics, liked to submerge himself in the things he spend his whole life studying, topics that had sent him around Avalance. Yet he would have liked to go outside. If only the weather allowed it...
The soft knock on his chamber door made him put the old and descriptive documents down and get out of the leather chair. Stiff as an old man he made his way to the door, one look at the guard told him enough and slowly he made his way to the cabinet room. By the time he entered the warm room that was furnished with books and incredible works of art the stiffness had gone. The red-haired lady in the room looked out over the snow-decked city in front of her.
“M’lady,” he inclined his head to her, “you called.”
He stared at her, standing perfectly still with his hands on his back, waiting for the Lady to speak.

slowly we fell into slumber

Her name was Lady Freyja Skarsgard of the Last Hearth these days. Quite the title, if she said so herself, and she had to get used to adding an entire city after her name while writing letters to the other nobles in Avalance. She was sure she would get the hang of it eventually, though. All she needed was a little guidance from time to time. And she had been blessed with a handful of trustworthy advisors that gladly saw her thrive. Freyja knew there weren’t many people she could trust in this world, but she knew she could trust her own.
Freyja had been looking out over her city, almost holding her breath when she had done so. It was rather intimidating, knowing that everywhere you looked fell under your responsibility. Ruling a city was a huge responsibility weighing on the shoulders of a young woman. Not to forget that she had already gone through hell and back with everything happening lately. A voice pulled her back to reality, and she looked over her shoulder, her blue gaze resting on the man that had entered the room. ”Keaton,” she greeted him, calm as ever, though looking a little off. The dark circles under her eyes showed how tired the Lady was. ”I found something in the castle,” she said, turning around completely as she walked over to the grande wooden table in the center of the room, nodding at the large piece of paper that had probably been folded up like that for years.

Keaton had come into her service two years ago, a young woman ready to rule the world. He had seen her potential, had seen how she could thrive with just the right guidance and therefore he hadn't looked any further, hadn't tried to find a more powerful Lord or Lady to enlist his services to. When her new position as Lady of the Last Hearth was announced he hadn't been surprised, knew this was only the first step forward for the young lady. She had a lot to learn, Keaton knew she condemned herself for that, but she was a clever woman who grasped the basics of the game quickly. Keaton wondered where she would be in a few years, which cities she could rule if only she dared.
Her blue gaze settled onto him, he just stared back. His face a mask of calmness, stripped from all emotion. That's how he liked it best, fact-based and tranquil. He had found that emptiness had the ability of either being unsettling or comforting. He suspected the lady fell into the latter category -finding it comforting to have someone around that didn't mix any emotions or schemes with the tasks ahead...
The lady looked off, tiredness had worked its cruelty through her body and face. Her shoulders slumped forward, her eyes circled in blue.
Keaton felt for her. Of course, he had been deprived of sleep as well these past few weeks, though he couldn't imagine how the weight of the responsibility upon her shoulders worsened it all.
She nodded to the paper on the table, yellow in age, probably fragile to the touch. Another important document that was found in the castle the Lochlains had left so carelessly. He wouldn't wait to read it, yet he didn't approach the parchment. Instead, he pulled one of the chairs back.
"Take a seat m' lady," whatever valuable information the parchment contained, the lady's health and wellbeing would always come first.

Freyja had stumbled upon this very document, and the first person that popped to her mind when she thought of discussing it, had been Keaton. The man had been with her for a couple of years now. He had been there when she had only been ruling the little castle near the city of Aeldun, and now he was with her here, in the Last Hearth.
The red-haired woman softly hummed as he told her to have a seat. She reached up, tucking a strand of red hair behind her ear as she pulled one of the heavy chairs back and sat down. Freyja reached for the document, fiddling with the piece of rope that held it together, and then gently nudged the paper to unfold. It rolled out over the table, filling most of it. It was a map. The paper yellow-stained because of old age, though the details hadn’t been wiped off of the surface of the handmade map just yet. The corner of her mouth pulled up a little, as she looked down at the map. Her eyes fell upon the Highlands, and she reached out to gently touch the paper where the letters of the Last Hearth had been carved in. ”I thought it was about time we discuss this matter,” she muttered. As she was sitting at the head of the table, the map was upside down for her, yet she had mesmerized every city, river and forest already.

Keaton pulled back the chair, afraid that if she were to stand any longer she would perhaps collapse. The parchment was huge and Keaton couldn’t wait to see what secrets it held. Yet he was patient as always and waited for her to sit down before he addressed the parchment.
As she sat down she tucked a strand of fiery hair behind her ear. As he was certain she had settled herself in the chair he walked over to the side table and poured the lady some wine. Without a word, he handed it to her and sat down across from her.
He held his breath as the parchment unfolded and an ancient map covered the table. It was magnificent and beautiful, yellow but besides that in great condition. The whole of Avalance, in great detail. Keaton’s eyes fell on the places he had been, scanning the world beneath his hands. The lady planted her finger softly on the Last Hearth, the city she now owned. What a way she had made from Aeldun to here.
Her voice was soft and he nodded in thought, “What do you wish to discuss regarding the Last Hearth m’lady?” There were several things he could discuss with her, trade, safety, security. All lay within his knowledge.
He leaned back in the chair, his eyes resting on the lady’s face. There was a point or two he wanted to discuss with her regarding the castle that was hers now, but that could wait. He knew her interests lay in the city of the Last Hearth, not really the castle that towered over it, so he let it rest for now and listened closely to what she wanted to discuss.

Freyja flashed Keaton a tiny smile as he pulled a chair back for her. He was a good man, a trustworthy advisor, and there were only a few people in this world she could trust like she trusted him. Truly, she wouldn’t know what to do without the man. The gods had already taken away her fiance, and Keaton had been the one picking up the pieces behind her, making sure that things that had to be done were done while she was trying to learn to live with her loss. It hadn’t been easy, and she knew there had been quite some weight on his shoulders lately, but he was still here. That had to count for something.
The red-haired woman looked at the parchment that unfolded itself on the table. She gave him a moment to take it in, allowing his eyes to trail over the map and recognize places he had set foot. He then asked her what she wanted to discuss regarding the Last Hearth. ”There’s quite a few things, actually,” she muttered, letting the tip of her finger rest against the parchment for a few more seconds before pulling it back. ”We need to build this place back up. We need to put ourselves back on the map.” She paused for a moment, her gaze focussed on the tiny black dot on the map. ”We need to show everyone why the Last Hearth is important.” She had an idea or two, but she wanted to know what he had to say about this before she would push him in a certain direction.

Seated behind the great table his eyes lingered over the huge map. Having wandered Avalance for his studies, Keaton recognised numerous places marked on the map. Memories, both good and bad, flashed through his head. A lovely life, a hard life from time to time, that's what he had had. After that much travel, he had felt ready to 'settle down' and take on an office at any lord or lady, he had ended up in the cold under a young lady he much admired. Yet, the last few years had been lined with the loss of her fianceé, it had been horrid the loss she had to go through.
And yet here she sat, crowned Lady of the Last Hearth, her eyes gleaming again.
He asked what she wanted to discuss, her answer made his lips slightly curve upwards. After a while she continued, he liked the way she was thinking. Had liked and seen it when he had first met her, which had made him practically drop his recommendation letters in her lap and would have begged her to take him on had she not spared him from such atrocities by taking him on before he could disgrace himself so completely. Prizing himself for his level-headedness, he would never admit to such outrageous behaviour, of course.

The young lady was inspiringly ambitious, the current gleam in her eyes the exact same that had made him stop his search of employment years ago. He couldn't help the grin as her ambitious voice filled the silent room.
He leaned back, knew that she had likely already worked out multiple ways to fulfil her vision, and crossed his arms, nodding in agreement.
"I'm all ears m'lady," the smile on his lips growing ever so slightly.
