slowly we fell into slumber
and I held you until the end of time
The Last Hearth. It was her new home now. The city she had been given to rule now that the Lochlains were gone. Freyja had been somewhat hesitant, but she would have never refused her duty. The red-haired woman also slowly came to realize that her family, after all these generetions, had been granted by the gods with something larger than a castle and a good hunting season. The last hearth of the kingdom, before any soul would wander into unending lands of snow, was hers to protect. And with that came the responsibility to protect the entire kingdom from whatever was further North. Savages and monsters.
Over the past few days, Freyja had been busy nosing around the castle of the stronghold. Trying to figure out what the businesses of the Lochlains had been, as she had to pick up the reins where they had so messily left. And even tonight, at a rather late hour, she found herself in the common room, going through letters that had been written by the former Lord, and letters that had been received by him too. A yawn left her mouth, at which she reached up to rub in her eyes, before letting her eyes wander over the sentences again in the light of the burning hearth.

These chains will not hold me down hold me
Home. By now, Maer wasn’t exactly sure what to think of it anymore. She didn’t handle change well and to move from the place she had known all this time to a city further up North was something she would never understand. She didn’t get why her sister accepted this responsibility - especially after what had happened. After her banishment and after what had happened to Tyrr. While Maer would forever pledge her loyalty to House Freyr, there were other people suitable for this. They could’ve stayed home.
After not showing her face for weeks, Maer finally stepped into the castle. She walked over the stone floor on bare feet, carefully looking around as she tried using all her senses, making sure she would hear any footstep that would come closer to her. She didn’t intend to be spotted, after all. Smalltalk was something she’d rather avoid and at night, those talks only seemed to be worse.
A flicker of light coming from what had to be the common room lured her attention and the girl quietly stepped towards the door, peeking around the corner to see a familiar face reading some letters. She smiled, pondering for a moment whether she would let her be, but eventually forced herself through the door. “Isn’t it time to sleep? ” she wondered out loud, pulling a hand through her hair as she kept her eyes locked on her sister.
