Her husband had died, and she had given herself and her region time to mourn the loss of their Lord, their leader, the person they looked up to. It was still a mystery to herself whether she had actually mourned or had made sure that her region had mourned. After all, she didn’t feel any different now then she had felt before the news had reached her. Outside the window of the carriage, the wet and flourishing landscape of the Glade had made way for the dryer landscape of the Highlands with its tall pine trees lining the road and cotton grass forming specks of white on the ground.

Where she would’ve fiddled with her dress only a year ago, now she was seated still, her eyes looking outside at a small group of people they rode past. The woman was tired of waiting for things to change. While the crown prince had visited her to inquire about the North, an idea had formed in her head. The North had done a lot for the Glade these past months, and it was never a bad idea to gain an alliance. This had seemed like the perfect moment. A couple of letters had been passed between her and Lord Freyr and he had invited her to his city.

She had left Sapphire Keep in the capable hands of her uncle and cousin and set off. Now, the carriage slowed as the pulled into the city and then towards the castle. It was different then Sapphire Castle, more rustic. The Lady didn’t know what to expect and after Gabriël multiple warnings to be careful, she waited patiently for all her guards to step out, before she got out as well. One of the knights held out his hand to help her down from the carriage and she politely thanked him before focusing on the situation at hand, not really knowing what to expect.

Her letters had come as a surprise. It had intrigued him though. He could think of a couple of reasons why she suddenly made such a proposal. Some were good, some were bad. In the end he was a bit weary of her intentions. A marriage was a great way to forge an alliance between the two regions. For now he did not regret the one his mother had set up with the Evergreen. Without their support the war against the Undying would not have gone as well as it had, and even now they had barely made it. Aside from that the Knights of the Glade had proven a most valuable force in the army that had held the front line. But he had known that at some point both the Glade and the Crownlands would come knocking at his door to seek a payment of some sort.

A marriage. Her cousin with his twin sister. Matters that could not be discussed over letters. So he had invited her to his city. They hadn’t seen each other since the tournament on her wedding day. Now her husband was dead, fallen while he had defended this very city and its people. He would offer her the opportunity to make peace with the past and possibly build a new future for both their Houses at the same time.

Her arrival was announced by a servant and he made his way towards the entrance of the castle. He watched as her carriage pulled up at the bottom of the stairs. First her guards took their position, after which the Lady herself appeared. As protocol demanded he waited for the herald to officially introduce them to each other. ”Lady Adeena Sylversword, Head of House Sylversword, Warden of the East”, He said with a loud voice that echoed over the square. ”Lord Apollo Freyr, Head of House Freyr, Warden of the North”, He continued. After that, he bowed towards her, as he would greet his equal, because she was. ”Lady Sylversword. Welcome to Caer Scion”, He said after he had straightened his back again. ”May I invite you and yours inside for refreshments after your long journey?” He then suggested. If anything, no one would ever be able to accuse him of being a bad host.

I feel like I've dulled myself through distance and distractions. I keep staring at the same unanswered questions hanging over my head everyday. When I try to answer them I realize how I thought I'd be set free, but instead I found I was just illuminating how little I actually knew about myself. Why do I ignore fires burning in the corners of my life until the flames are about to engulf me?

Only a year earlier, when her council had proposed an arranged marriage to her, she had gone with it. It was her duty to make sure that the people of her province felt safe under her rule. If that meant that she had to marry, to give them the assurance of a knight at the head of their region, she would do it. The woman had seen the upsides of a marriage that was arranged to provide one or preferably both parties with benefits. Now, being a widow, she had decided not to degrade herself again to marrying the first the best knight in her path, she would look for something that would bring her more than just a man. But that didn’t mean that she wouldn’t try to form alliances using other methods. Or well, the same method, marriage, but not her own.

After realizing that the Highlands were the last line of defense between her and the monsters that lived high up in the cursed reach, she had come to the conclusion that an alliance with House Freyr wasn’t such a bad idea after all. A proposal was extended to Lord Freyr and now she was here, in the capital of his region, Caer Scion. The herald’s voice resounded over the square while Adeena patiently waited. Warden of the East. Never had she been referred to in that manner, but it did have a very nice ring to it.

Apollo Freyr bowed to her and with a gentle smile, she returned the gesture. While the woman still bowed to a lot of people as a curtesy, out of politeness, this was different, this was one of respect as much as it was one of politeness. ”Lord Freyr, thank you for inviting me to your city,” she spoke as she stood upright again. Blue eyes slowly took in the man. She had seen him before, he had been present on the Sylversword tourney and had shown great skill. Adeena remembered. ”It was a long but pleasant journey, but I’d like some refreshments,” she spoke while moving forward, the knights flanking her moving with every single movement of hers. The Lady had come to talk, but talking didn’t always have to happen right away, right? They could exchange some pleasantries beforehand.

As he was formally introduced to the Lady once more he couldn’t help but wonder what the Crown would think of this. It was no secret the Highlands and the Crownlands were just at peace for the sake of the people. He did not consider them allies though. Not even after they had helped out with the war against the Undying. For him it was the King’s duty to protect the people within the borders of his Kingdom. If he had declined then it would have given his House even more reason to try and claim the Highlands for themselves. The problem was that he hadn’t been sure if there would have been a Highlands left to claim if he hadn’t swallowed his pride and asked for help. So he had. For the sake of his people. For the survival of the North.

And now there was talk of an alliance with the Glade; forever known as the province most loyal to the Crown. A very unexpected turn to say the least. He was curious what the conclusion of their conversation would be. But first and foremost he had a duty as host to fulfil. The armour of the knights escorting her inside echoed through the halls of his home. He was never really happy with armed forces within the walls of his castle. Even though their relationship was quite neutral for now, he had his family nearby and he would always protect them.

His trust had to be earned. For now he had his own guards stationed in crucial places so they could stop any threats before they reached the private quarters of the castle. That would have to suffice for now. He brought the group towards the main dining hall. Several tables were prepared with afternoon tea and sweets. A servant helped the Lady to sit down on his left, where his most important guest usually was seated. He took place after here at the head of the table and gave the servants the signal to start pouring the Lady and her knights whatever they preferred to drink. ”If I may ask, my Lady, do you have any recent news on the activities in the Ironwood Forest?” He asked. He hadn't heard any reports on the gangs that robbed innocent travelers anymore lately. At least not since the war had ended.

Those introductions really weren’t her thing, Adeena thought they were overly complicated, and they said nothing about the person standing before her. But it was protocol, it was how it was supposed to be done, it was tradition. But here she was, Lady of the Glade, Lady of House Sylversword, shamelessly having a meeting with the Warden of the North, the head of the one house that had always seemed to oppose her ally, House Aldyr throughout the years. While she didn’t agree with everything that Lord Freyr or his father had done up until this day, she did agree with the vigor he had used to protect his region and with it, their country.

The clanging sound of the metal bounced off the walls of the Freyr Castle and Adeena realized just how well adjusted her home was to absorb those familiar sounds. As they had walked into the building, the Lady had gently gestured three of the knights to stay outside but she still deemed it necessary to take the other two inside with her. Blue eyes observed the guards stationed everywhere and she knew that the men next to her were doing the same, but she at least understood why he protected every area. His family lived within those walls and Adeena was bringing knights and danger within his home.

The little child within her wanted to start bouncing at the sight of sweets. It couldn’t be said that Lord Freyr didn’t know how to please his guests. Adeena sat down, folding her heavy dress beneath her as she took her seat. The knights nervously glanced at the drinks being poured as they stood behind their Lady, but Adeena herself got distracted by the Lord speaking to her. ”Ah, Ironwood Forest.” she hummed while turning her cup of tea but not yet thinking of lifting it to her lips. ”I have a patrol going through the southern area daily, but sadly there still are some reports of ambushes,” she spoke solemnly. ”But I can also share with you that the frequency of those robberies has lessened.” It was like trying to appease a lion with a mouse, but she couldn’t magic good news where there wasn’t any. ”May I assume that you asking me about it, means that you haven’t had any reports about disturbances within the Forest?” she politely asked back. This were pleasantries, neither of them had to share this information, but it cleared the way for their future conversation.

As a sign of goodwill three of the knights that had been sticking very close to her side had stayed behind. He knew how formidable the warriors of the Glade were. He had seen them in action first-hand when they had come to their aid. He tried his hardest to stop the thoughts intruding his mind. She was not his enemy. Not today. Not an ally either, but perhaps that would one day in the near future change. For now she was a guest in his castle, in his region, and he would treat her as such.

It appeared the Lady herself trusted in that status too. She appeared to be less nervous than her guards. At the same time he couldn’t help but notice how she wasn’t drinking nor eating anything before he had helped himself to a sip and a scone. In the meantime he listened carefully to the information she decided to share. ”You assume correctly. I’m afraid the Undying have successfully scared away these crooks further south, thus into your region”, He commented. ”Perchance we could get rid of them once and for all by working together on the matter. With my troops on one side and yours on the other, they have nowhere to run”, He casually suggested. It was both a truth and bait. He wanted to see how serious she was about being allies before they would speak about an actual engagement.

There was this fine line nobody ever talked about whenever two High Lords, or Ladies for that matter, met. It carried an immense amount of risk to walk inside some other Lord’s territory, let alone his home, just like it carried a lot of risk to allow another Lady inside your territory. Normally Adeena would never take this risk, but the war against the undying had made it more than clear that allies weren’t a bad thing to have. While she’d rather have had this conversation in the sanctity of her own home, she understood that the Warden of the North wasn’t too excited about leaving his wide and newborn child and heir behind. So here she was, two nervous guards behind her who were eying all the things that could contain poison, enjoying the smell of the drink her cup held.

Her chin lifted as he spoke off the lessened troubles in the Northern side of the forest and she hummed. ”That is probably a correct observation on your part. We have been seeing an influx of raids on little hunter towns around the edge of the forest. It’s possible that these bandits are getting desperate,” she hummed while in thought. When he suggested working together, she caught how he tried to keep it casual and she smiled while tilting her head lightly. He was testing her, she could feel it in her bones. ”I was just thinking the same thing,” she answered him with a polite smile as she nodded. ”It would be nice to give our hunters more opportunity to get something out their ventures in the woods, this would be possible if we manage to get these evildoers out of it,” she thoughtfully spoke, taking a sip from her drink before letting her eyes go back to Lord Freyr and continuing, ”Question is how we’re going to do that? Daily patrols through the woods around the same time?” she suggested while already thinking about the practical side of things.
