After leaving Lilura, all cleaned up, well fed and back in her own pair of clothes, though the woman had insisted that she could keep the warm sweater, she was feeling better. Not, because she had been able to process the news her mother had put on her. But just because someone had taken care of her like a mother. It had been weird at start that much was for sure, something that young Riley wasn’t quite used too to be fair. The next part of her trip had gone to Oakstead, all while Gatto was carrying her. She had paused there for a few days again, spending time with Nathanael, before she actually took the big step and go to Goldenleaf. A place she had never visited before, mainly due to the on-going feud between Oakstead and Goldenleaf. But now. She couldn’t help herself in going there.

Her main task to do there was to talk to the heir of George. Trying to mend the broken fence that was the feud between their families. And in the end, who better than her to do so? The girl that literally was the bridge between the two families. Though she did this to help out the new Lord of Oakstead. But one of the other things that she actually came to do here was talk about horses. It had been brought to her ear that young Frederick would be starting a jousting school and she could help him with that more than anything. Given that she possessed all the horses from her brother’s former stable, a good set of actual jousting horses. Gatto here was one of them. The woman jumped off the horse and hummed, grabbing the reigns and walking through the city, looking around to a place that could’ve also been her home if you came to think of it.

Today was extra busy. Aside from further organising his wedding he was expected at a meeting with the assistant-manager of the carpenter’s guild later that day. There were so many decisions to be made about the project him and his father were now working on together. It had honestly been the best surprise to come home to. The plans had been mere drafts as George wanted to include him in the design process as much as he could. With his knowledge on horses, jousting horses in particular, and his dad’s knowledge on setting up and building new businesses combined they would establish the jousting school together.

On top of all that today was his birthday. Later that night there would be a special birthday dinner and the townsfolk could enjoy a free drink at their expenses. It wouldn’t be too fancy but he didn’t mind; he appreciated spending time with his family and friends more than any material surprise they could arrange anyway. For now he was on his way to the stables, as he did every day. It was hard sometimes to find some free time but he made it work regardless. On his way there he was suddenly stopped by a strange sight. A jousting horse walking down the road, led by a woman he didn’t recognise.

Without actually thinking twice he made his way over to the brunette. ”Good day to you”, He said with a smile. His gaze was quickly drawn to the horse again. He inspected the muscles that were clearly visible beneath the short pelt, even when the animal was standing somewhat still. ”That is a beautiful horse”, He complimented her. ”Is it yours?” He then asked. He rarely saw women around jousting horses, neither as their riders nor their caretakers.

Calmly she was walking right alongside the white stallion, a smile caressing her lips. If anything, the horse could be recognized by those of the city that had attended the tourney months ago. Which made her feel nervous for sure, but she wasn’t here to speak ill words or anything. Mending fences. That would be the prime goal here and she just hoped that she could in fact talk to the heir of the city. Because if anything, he would understand right. Or well at least the fact that she was tired of this feud, maybe everything else she had to say would go over his head. Which was always the possibility, but she needed to make that choice. She needed to try and connect with this part of her family as well. Which was still the weirdest thing to even think about.

Out of nowhere, her not paying much sense to people that had actually come up to here, a man appeared and she startled. Such a bad conscience. But the smile on his face was more than enough to make her snap out of it. Actually falling right back in it the moment she looked at him better. Making her smile fall very shortly. ’He is. And he recently became mine yes.’ Too recently if you asked her. Riley did her best to fall back in a more cheery expression instead of a guilty one. Surely, it had been an accident first and foremost but it had been her brother in the end, her brother riding this horse. ’Mylord, could we possibly have a chat about somethings. My name is Riley Quinn and it’s come to my understanding that you’re going to be needing horses soon.’

The horse looked strangely familiar. At the same time, he saw so many jousting horses at tournaments. He wondered if there were any left he hadn’t seen before. Up until the accident he had attended almost every event he could possibly go to; first as a squire taking care of the gear of his master and not too long later as a competitor. He had climbed the ranks faster than anyone had ever expected. Soon he had reached the top in his category, and as one of the youngest jousters he had been promoted to compete with actual Knights. It had been one of the proudest moments of his life. And here he was, about to open his own jousting school so he could pass on his knowledge and train the future champions.

And apparently the news had already spread. He had not expected a Quinn to come and talk to him about such a matter. He quickly connected the dots, and now the scar on the chest of the horse was more visible. He felt how his mouth dried out a bit as he thought about the accident. Then his thoughts shifted to the fact she had recently lost her relative. He failed to remember how they were related, but it would have hurt her nonetheless. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Lady Riley. If I may I'd want to offer my condolences. Lord Rowan was a kind and just man. I don't know if you knew, but we had a good conversation, after.. The accident. We spoke about peace between our cities", He decided to say. She had the right to know that there was no bad blood between him and Rowan Quinn, and in extent those who carried that surname.

”So, news spreads fast huh”, He tried to lighten up the mood a bit. ”Indeed, I plan on opening a jousting school someday in the near future”, He confirmed her assumptions. He then looked over his shoulder, in the direction of the stables. ”Could I offer your horse a box in the Carthas stables? We can talk without being disturbed there too”, He suggested. He was curious to what she wanted to discuss with him.

Maybe at first lord Frederick didn’t see it. But she could see it dawn on the man and shortly bit his lip. Casting her glance down for a short moment. But no, this was no time for feeling bad right? Or well not anymore. Surely the young woman was feeling worse than ever and this all was just to keep her mind off of it. Not that it helped that she was actually talking to her cousin right now. It was messing her up even more, but she ignored how she was feeling herself, listening to his words. Again those condolences she had heard time and time again. ’That’s why I am here. Thank you for the condolences, my brother was indeed a good man. Passed away way too soon.’ She softly hummed, looking the other straight in the eyes. Looking up, because well the other was taller than her.

’When in the horse business, and one is asking for jousting horses it does.’ The woman grinned softly. It was a specific request and well in the end she could help him out with some of the horses of her brother, some that weren’t destined for the tracks. ’Gatto would be firmly pleased with that.’ She nodded, smiling up at him. Shortly placing her hand on the neck of the white stallion. Talking to Fred, about well everything. Peace, horses, their blood ties. Would it baffle the man? Just like it had baffled her? Was he truly out for peace? Or would he actually laugh in her face when she even suggested it? Though, Frederick didn’t seem to be lying to her. But honestly, right now she was afraid that she couldn’t tell right from wrong.

The news of Rowan’s demise had reached him even when he was at the border between the Glade and the Highlands. They had lost a good Lord that day, a good Knight too. A future ally to his House, maybe. But most importantly Lady Riley had lost a brother, so he offered his condolences to her. Perhaps she had heard those words one too many times by now but he wanted to use the opportunity to mention the talk he had had with the man. He wanted her to know that he was not angry. She then confirmed that she wanted to have a conversation about it with him, along with other things. He suggested going to the stables.

Guiding her down the road he nodded at a few people passing them by. He then brought her and the horse inside, leading them to a box that was currently empty. He opened the heavy door so she could walk him right in. ”I like to take care of my horses myself”, He told her as he looked around looking for a bucket. ”So if you allow me, I will get Gatto some food and water while we talk?” He then said. He could ask a stableboy, but he didn’t like standing around and doing nothing while there was stuff to do.

Getting condolences of the man that had lost an arm to an accident caused by her brother was weird on it’s own. Because in the end Frederick needed to live with this while her brother truly had died. A weird world they lived in. Though in this very moment Riley wasn’t sure if she still felt sad about her brother since everything was being over shadowed by well, the other bomb that had been dropped on her. But knowing that the man wasn’t angry at her half-brother was something that did bring her some peace. Maybe it would be easier for her to make peace in the name of the Crosses then. Just maybe that could be her last act. They moved towards the stables, the young woman looking around smiling at everyone who actually smiled at them or well most likely only Frederick since he was their future lord.

Walking into the box with Gatto, she took of the headgear of the horse shortly scratching him behind the ear and placing her head against that of the horse. Slowly but surely saying goodbye of a horse that she had loved for a long while now. Eventually taking some distance as Frederick talked again, looking back at the man. Trying to keep her own emotions at bay here. Gatto would have a good place here. ’Off course. He’s in your stables now, you can decide whatever you want to do.’ A smile curled around her lips. Nodding at the man. Get a grip Riley.

The familiar noises of the stables mixed with the typical scent made him feel more relaxed almost straight away. This was his main hiding spot for when he was overworked or too  stressed. Lately his mood had improved a lot though. After returning from the castle at the border he had found a renewed motivation. He had proved himself to be useful still. It had helped tremendously. Now he could focus on what really mattered again. His wedding that would take place soon, building the jousting academy and finding new horses to breed his own line of jousting horses. He had a lot of plans and he was genuinely excited about them.

The young brunette told him he could do whatever he wanted now the horse was in his stables. So he gestured to her to follow him as he started walking around to collect a bucket and a couple of brushes. He still hadn’t really caught on with the fact Riley would be leaving the horse here permanently. He got back into the box and handed her a brush too before ducking underneath his neck to get to his other side. He started combing through the short pelt to remove the dust and dirt that had gathered there on their trip here. ”You wanted to talk about something?” He then carefully reminded her. She probably hadn’t come all the way here to brush her horse.

Frederick had passed her a brush and she smiled at the young man. Nodding. As she started brushing the white fur of the stallion as well. Something about this always calmed her down and maybe that was exactly what she needed. To be calm again, certainly for the conversation that was about to unfold. Her other hand was resting on Gatto’s back. She’d miss the horse that much was sure. But Frederick would have more use of him here. And it would be better for the stallion as well. Doing what he was trained for again, yeah that would suit him way more than just being used to travel all the time.

The heir of the house mentioned something again and she looked up. Dark eyes finding his for a moment, making her nod. ’I have indeed come her for a few reasons.’ She spoke softly, focusing on a spot on Gatto’s neck. A little slight discoloration. Which really stood out against the white fur. ’A few matters need to be discussed and I feel more at ease with bringing them to you. Given the nature of your relationship with my brother as well it seems better.’ Riley shortly explained before her eyes went back to the man on the other side of the horse. ’House Cross would like to insist on bringing peace between the two houses, once and for all move on from the horrible feuding. I am here as a representative of Lord Nathanael on the matter. See it as my last act before I completely give the reigns to another family.’

Now they were both in the stable it was time he tried to find out why she had come here. He couldn’t imagine she would’ve done so without any reason. Their families had never been friendly towards each other. He had not felt entirely at ease those days he had spent in Oakstead. Especially because for him it had been hard to hide who he truly was. Perhaps she could stay under the radar here. Either way this place was safe to discuss whatever she had to say. Or so he hoped. He figured that she would judge herself. And eventually she started talking indeed, after a little encouragement from his side.

With a thoughtful expression on his face he kept brushing the pelt of the horse. His mind was elsewhere but the movements were so familiar he didn’t really need to pay attention anyway. ”I am full glad House Cross wishes to honour the spoken agreement I made with your brother. However, I am not acting Lord of Goldenleaf just yet. My father is still in charge and he will have the final say in any negotiation between our cities”, He told her in all honesty. ”He is a reasonable man though. I’m sure we can at least start thinking about a peace treaty at some point in the near future”, He then added. ”I could arrange for you to have a talk with my father, if you want to”, He suggested. For now he could try and steer it into the right direction but he wouldn’t go behind his back with it.

Riley wouldn’t be herself if she cut right to the chase. They had a few things to discuss here, but first the most important bit, not for her personally but she had made a promise in the end to Nathanael. She would ensure some kind of peace between the two cities. The best way to do so was going to the Carthas heir, because she couldn’t know if his father would truly be up for something like that. Surely a matter that was going above her head her late brother would’ve probably said, but right now it was one of those last straws she was hanging on to. Maybe this was a form of payback on the man she called father, to try and undo the feuding that has been going on for years now.

’I know your father will. But I think you might not have told him about the talk you had with Rowan. Which is understandable if you didn’t.’ The woman calmly continued, the brush moving through Gatto’s hair, softly making her smile. She was giving him a final brushing and it felt nothing but right. ’I don’t think it’s wise for me to start talking to your father given who I am. But maybe you could talk to him about the matter? Lord Cross has nothing but a kind heart, he really wants to stop this fighting and so do i.’ She calmly spoke. Yeah, but she wasn’t going to talk to the Lord Carthas himself. That wouldn’t be smart, not with the coming whirlwind of news. ’Now, let’s talk horses shall we? You’re looking for jousting horses right? Mare’s or stallions?’
