A while had passed. Truth be told, he had no clues how many sunsets he had missed. Alec had been a wreck, a sad wreck. Actually looking rather pathetic if you thought about who he was. The passed couple of days he had spend alone. No Camilla, no dogs just him. Not even sleeping in his own bed because he couldn’t stand it. That had been their bed and he couldn’t cope. Sleeping was almost completely out of the question. A few little naps from a few minutes, that’s how he was spending his days. Hidden away in one of the rooms at the back of the hallway. Not wanting to deal with anyone. The whole damn world could go to waste for all he cared. A sigh slipped over his lips. Eventually picking up on someone walking towards the room he was in.

Camilla had entered and he just turned on his side, not wanting to face her. But the woman being who she was forced him to face her. Even pulling open the heavy curtains that had been blocking all daylight. Making him hiss. Which was received with a stern stare of the older woman. ’You need to go to Vesper..’ She simply stated, resting her hand on his shoulder for a few seconds. Wanting to say more but she kept her tongue. Nodding her head to the accompanying room where he could take a bath as well. When she had left he had dragged himself out of the bed and sighed, feeling his legs tremble underneath him shortly. Dreading to actually just fall over. Pathetic.

After spending a good hour in the bath he had regained some sense. Some. His heart still felt heavy. But he needed to do this. For Lenox. For himself. For Willa even. Alec got dressed soon enough, a complete black attire as he made his way downstairs. Being greeted by both Odin and Thor who were laying at the end of the stairs. Very shortly he scratched both of their heads, making his way outside eventually. Pulling up the hood from his cloak, not yet ready to face the prying eyes of the citizens of the city. Making his way to the physician's office. Ignoring everyone that actually addressed him. Knocking on the door of the building, feeling his heart just sink down in his stomach.

I've spent a lifetime running, and I always get away

She couldn't have prepared herself for what was to come, and yet she did. Like she always did. And so, against all odds, one day the most gruesome of outcomes had occured. After she had inspected and concluded there was no hope left for the child of Willa she had told her. She could still feel the pain of the woman. Who had lost it all, and yet, had lost nothing at all. Because while Vesper was sure that there was no life inside that belly anymore, no living creature, something still had to leave the body. And that would be the most painful thing of all. Not only physically, but mentally as well. She couldn't speak out of experience, only from assisting in those manners. She had, in fact, seen something like that happen before. It didn't require any special care at this stage, not when the little baby was only so small. But it would require the strength of the mother to live on after. There was nothing like losing a child.

So when the little baby was presented to her after what felt like only hours later, even though it had been a day or two, she felt her heart sink to the ground. She had accepted the faith of the child as soon as she had told Willa, but to hold the little baby in her hands now was something else entirely. She had asked the servant to close the door of the medical office. It was now time to do her job. Like she had promised the couple. She would find out what was wrong, no matter how difficult she would find it. But this was unlike any other body she had ever inspected. This was no guard, no fallen soldier, this was just a little thing that had never even gotten to see the light of the world. It was dead before its time.

After hours, days and nights of inspection she had found the cause. Of course Vesper would. Because no matter how well she did her job as mistress of whispers she had years upon years of training in the medical field. If anyone could find out what was wrong it was her. There were many options that could have caused this but there was only one option that had presented itself as truthful: poison. And while it took all the pain away from Willa and Alec, it didn't make it any easier. Because the child would have lived without it. She was so full in thought that she hardly heard the knock on the door. She looked up from the letter in front of her as a servant entered, informing her the Lord Commander had just entered the castle and was on his way. She blessed herself for being in her business office, not the medical one. Because that would have been too much of a trigger right now, she assumed. Books and letters were a far safer option than poison and medical tools. And then not long after, a second set of knocks reached her ears. With a heavy heart she stood up and walked to the door. A sigh left her mouth before opening it. "Lord Commander." She said. "Please, come in."

The walk over to Vesper’s office was one walk too much. His heart or what was left of it was thudding in his chest. Every part of his body hurt. Though it could also be that his body was yearning, yearning to have Willa close. But she had left. Something that was still sinking in, something that he didn’t want to believe. Alec was still holding on to those last shreds of hope. Though the man had already taken up his chambers in the barracks to sleep at night. Or better said to stare up to the ceiling and ponder over what had happened. The simplicity of it all was that the Lord Commander didn’t even dare to close his eyes, scared of the images of Willa and the baby might torment him in his sleep. Which certainly wasn’t something good to do, because it made the pain and sadness wrecking through his body even worse. The man was only a shape of his former self, and honestly if it wasn’t for the cloak he had wrapped around his body the damage would be even more visible. Right now the only thing that was visible was the fact that his cheeks were fallen in. Not just a little. Alec had almost refused every meal that was offered through him by Cammi. Only eating the bare minimum. But for a guy his size that wasn’t enough.

Softly he knocked on the door. He was afraid of actually finding out what happened to their little girl. But he knew that he needed to know. Willa would’ve needed him to know and since he was here on her proxy. As the door opened he looked up at Vesper only softly nodding, before stepping into the room. Shortly glancing around in the office, a place he had visited multiple times before. Too stubborn to actually sit down he had walked to her desk, placing his hands on the back of the chair, staring out in front of him with a hollow and empty look.

I've spent a lifetime running, and I always get away

How did you tell someone that their child was long lost before it was even born? That the one thing you cherished most in this world was never meant to be? She had been asking herself ever since she had inspected Willa. And then, when the baby had been born, she was left with an even more painful question. How did you tell that same person, who had known they would lose their child, that it wasn't of natural causes? But that it was a death caused by the hands of another. Carefully planned, planted and carried out. There was nothing anyone of them could have done, not even her. That was the hardest part of it all.

The moment she opened her door and let Alec enter she felt as if her feet were nailed to the ground. Her heart had dropped upon seeing him, a father who had lost it all. His child, now possibly his wife. She knew exactly what it would do to a family, she had seen it before. But now was not the time for her to lose her objectivity, she never did, after all. She carefully approached him, her eyes inspecting every inch of his being with her trained eye. He hadn't eaten, slept in days, she could tell. But that was not what he needed to hear right now. He was here for the answers she had to give him. "Are you sure you want to hear?" She asked him slowly. She needed to be sure he was, before she brought the news down upon him that would ruin his world, maybe even him.

Alec tried to keep his composure, tried to actually stay strong but the man was failing terribly. Each day something else seemed to happen, that was bringing up the cracks in his face. He hated feeling like this, he hated that things like this were happing to him and to Willa for that matter. There was nothing that he had done to actually deserve this. But here he was. Waiting for the inevitable news that Vesper was about to share with him about their baby girl. Another flash of pain shot through his heart just thinking about the lifeless body of their little girl, bundled against his chest. Tears welled up, but he tried biting them away. He tried moving past it but it wasn’t working out.

The man spotted her eyeing him and were he would normally tell her not to do such a thing he stayed still now. Letting her think whatever she needed to think about. ’Just tell me Vesper.’ He spoke in a monotone tone, looking up at her. Knowing that she was probably worried sick about him, but honestly not knowing this would probably ruin him even more. He needed to know. For himself, for Willa and for Lenox. ’What happened to her?’ His blue eyes didn’t shine so bright anymore, they almost seemed glazed over right now. No, the man wasn’t doing to well that was quite easy to spot.
