the world was on fire and

Freyja quietly nuzzled her nose further into the brown fur she was wearing. Her fingers were tightly holding onto the reins of her horse as she manoeuvred the animal through the streets of Aeldun. Winter had come to an end now that the dragons in the South had disappeared, now that the Undying were gone. The North could breathe again, though she knew that the lives of many people would never be the same again. Her life, for example. The person she had cared most for had been taken from her in the most horrible way possible. That horrible, that it kept her awake at night.
The red-haired woman looked down at the guards that protected the home of the new Lord Corbin. ”I’m Lady Freyja of House Skarsgard, and I’m here to speak to the new Lord,” she calmly spoke, waiting for them to pass the message. Not too long after, Freyja dismounted her horse. Her fingers briefly touched the neck of the animal, before she made her way over to the guards that would bring her to the new Lord. They would soon find out if this Corbin was just as stubborn as the former one.

Finn stared out in front of him, brushing his hand through his hair. This was freaking crazy. Leading a whole damn city, he had no freaking clue what to do first. He had been here for a few weeks, just finding out everything there was to find out. Finding an old brewery that wasn’t being used anymore, putting his focus in that because he wanted to produce a new kind of ale. Something fitting for the north. Yet also something that would be appreciated through the whole country. He hadn’t yet reached out to other lords and ladies, because honestly he first needed to check on the citizens of Aeldun. Which he had done, a week after the burial of the old lord he went to the people instead of summoning them. Listening to their grievances and more. Showing that he at least cared about them. But it was draining him more than he expected. And he missed Dragonwatch more and more each day.

And again, he couldn’t catch a break. A guard had entered the room he was seated in. Which wasn’t the usual throne room, because that room felt a tad to damp if you asked him. No, Finn was seated in his study at the fire when the guard had approached him. Lady Skarsgard. Who was that? Though an answer came from the guard, the Skarsgards were a family Rhysand always bickered with apparently. Living in a castle quite close to his. The Lady had lost her fiancé in the war and he shortly hummed, nodding. Great. A woman was escorted into the study and he stood up from his chair, smiling shortly at her. Bowing his head slightly. ’Welcome to Aeldun, can I offer you something to drink?’

the world was on fire and

The red-haired woman patiently waited until the guards had passed the message. Their horses were taken care of while a few guards brought her over to the place Lord Corbin would welcome her. She had seen the castle of Aeldun before, she knew the way just a little bit, not too surprised they were heading towards the study. She could vividly recall her meeting with Rhysand. He had looked quite sickly back then, and she wondered how this new Lord, a few years younger than herself, was holding up. She had been even younger than him when she had been appointed as head of her house, so she felt safe to say that she knew it couldn’t be easy. However, she wasn’t here to support him. She was here to see whether or not they would continue the game his predecessor had started with her.
Freyja greeted the young man with a slight bow of her head as well, her blue eyes quickly scanning over him. He barely looked like a man, more like a boy. How wonderful. Freyja forced a faint smile on her lips when he welcomed her, and asked her if he could offer her something to drink. ”Do you have any ale?” she asked him, already knowing the answer. Of course he had ale. The woman walked further into the study, looking around a little. ”How are you getting settled?” she asked him, her eyes eventually finding the young man again.

Truth be told maybe the young raven had to polish up on his political knowledge before he would indulge himself in meetings like the very one that was about to happen. Because the kid literally knew nothing about the very woman that would soon be in his study and it bothered him that a guard actually had to tell him about matters like this. It didn’t came off very professional and well he didn’t need to know how he should actually act, apart from being polite. Something that his father had thought him to be for sure. But apart from that, what did he say? What would he say without making her angry or sad? Because he was award that he could manage both within seconds and that was a very toxic combination as well for someone who was ruling a city.

When Lady Skarsgard eventually had stepped in the room he had greeted her in the most polite way possible. The faint smile on her lips told him that he at least had done that right. A short smirk curled around his lips at her ask. Did he have ale? Off course he had ale. ’I’ve got some yes, different kinds even so do you want something from the new up and coming brew or just the stuff that I have around here?’ Which was also his own produced ale, yet a first draft. Strong on the stomach for sure, yet with a fresh aftertaste which was something special. ’Let’s sit down shall we? You’re probably tired from the journey here.’ Finn hummed softly as he sat back down near the fire. Staring into it shortly. ’It’s a bit much if I am totally honest with you.’

The man she was about to meet was a few years younger than her, and from what she had heard, he had no experience ruling. Now, he was given an entire town to take care of. She had struggled to lead a smaller house at that age, imagine being in his shoes. Freyja wasn’t here to take the young man under her wing, though. No, she was here to make clear to him that he shouldn’t cross her family as Rhysand had done.
Apparently, he would immediately jump to the ale. Perhaps the young man was in dire need of something to lighten the mood, which she didn’t mind. She could handle a glass of ale. She raised her brows a little when he mentioned the new ale he had to offer. ”Well, I’d love to try something new,” she said, wanting to give him the chance to show her what he got. A hum left her mouth when he offered to sit down, which she did, briefly following his gaze towards the fire. ”I can imagine,” she told him, looking back at the young man. ”I was about your age when I was appointed as the head of my family,” she told him, as he probably wouldn’t know such details himself. ”Have you met Lord Freyr already?” she curiously asked him, wondering if he had met the man that was their superior.

Honestly, he thought of it as weird. Why would she come to visit him? In the end it should’ve been him who had ridden out on a horse to meet her. But well, he’d probably get lost and never found again. Which wouldn’t be to grand for the house that much was for certain, so yes he was happy that she had showed up on his doorstep. But just maybe, the young man doubted the intentions of the lady. Which had nothing to do with who she was, but everything to do with who he was.

’I think you’ll like the new brew, its something of a fresher taste, a bit more fruity but with a punch certainly.’ Finn informed her as he grabbed a pitcher that was filled with beer, kept on the other side of the study. Two glasses, filling them up with the light golden brow n liquid before moving back to her. Putting the glass down in front of her on the table, smiling. ’Please tell me what you think of it hm?’ Because in the end the man was just starting the whole thing up and though he was getting all the help he needed, the first real taste of it was the most important one in the end. When she mentioned that she was close to his age when she was appointed to what she was today he briefly nodded. Worrying his lip shortly. ’I haven’t just yet. I needed to deal with burying my cousin first and then the people off course. But soon.’ A meeting he wasn’t looking forward to if he was honest. Because if anything, he was a southerner in their midst and well it was the most dangerous thing one could be in the Highlands. ’But, given that you didn’t make your way to Aeldun to talk about Lord Freyr, might I ask why you are here milady?’

Freyja knew the reason why she and Rhysand had clashed as much as they had done. The man had been wanting to marry her, and she had picked a commoner over him. Tyrr had been the man for her, and now he was no more. Neither was Rhysand. Apparently, all the men around her were slowly disappearing. Not that it mattered, she wouldn’t have married the man anyways. She was still mourning the loss of her sun and stars. The love of her life. No, she didn’t see herself fall in love again any time soon, and neither would she want to marry for political reasons. She was still young, and it could wait for a bit longer.
The woman weakly smiled when he told her about his new ale. He seemed rather passionate about it. She didn’t know much about ale, other than how it usually tasted. However, she wouldn’t shy away from trying something new. As long as it wasn’t too much of a punch in the face, she would be fine. She took the glass, humming in agreement, but didn’t get the chance to have a sip just yet as they continued their conversation. Apparently, Lord Corbin hadn’t had the pleasure of meeting Lord Freyr just yet. He then asked her why she had come to Aeldun, as he concluded it wasn’t to talk about their High Lord. ”I wanted to meet my new neighbor,” she calmly spoke, her blue eyes locked on the younger man. ”As I assume we will see each other more than just today.” They were the nobles of the North, after all.

Maybe somewhere deep down Finn was nervous, nervous what this meeting might bring. But if the young man had learned anything through the years it was keeping his emotions invisible for the people surrounding him. Apart from his anger, that had always been clearly visible no matter how hard he actually tried to keep that at bay. It always found a way out and well, honestly as long as that was the only thing he actually showed he could leave with that. Yet right now, curiosity was showing as well. Curiosity about why this woman was here apart from the normal welcome. Their had to be something more right? Sure, Finn couldn’t pinpoint what exactly but still.

’It’s nice to meet you.’ Was it? Maybe just a little yes. It was nice to see a semi-friendly face though how long she would stay that was only the question in the end. ’I surely hope so milady. I tend to do things different than my cousin did. I’m going to exploit this city for what it is. A merchant’s town. It’s time Aeldun went back to it’s roots I think.’ Finn hummed shortly, leaning back in his seat as a small smile curled around his lips. There was only the how he was going to do this to fill in to be fair. ’Tell me, what was the nature of your relationship with my cousin?’ Which he only meant in the were they friend or foe. Nothing else. Which brought it to his attention. He had forgotten something so valuable right now. Shortly biting his lip as he placed his glass down on the table, shortly lowering his head. ’I am sorry for the loss of your fiancé. I know this doesn’t mean much coming from me since I didn’t know the man and since I’m from the south. But I mean it. From the little stories I have heard he was a fine man. If there is anything House Corbin can do.’

the world was on fire and
no one could save me but you
The last time she had visited Aeldun had been months ago. Everything had been so different back then. She had worried about the Corbins stealing their hunting territory, something that seemed so silly to be bothered about nowadays. Perhaps she was slowly growing colder to those around her, drowning in her own grief now that her other half was gone. He was gone and she would never be able to call herself his wife, to take on his name, to become the mother of his children. The two of them had been wanting to wait until their marriage night. A night that would never come now. A painful reminder that life never went how you wanted it to go.
Apparently, the young man was planning on turning Aeldun around. He wanted it to go back to a merchant’s town, back to the very roots of the city. Freyja softly hummed, not really having much to add on that. If that were his plans, she was fine with it, as long as they didn’t bother her family. ”Your cousin and I had our differences, to say the least,” she said, straightening her back a little. ”I’m surprised your advisors didn’t tell you this,” she then added, her blue eyes resting upon the man. ”But I’m safe to say that your cousin didn’t particularly like me.” Because she had, in fact, turned him down. Freyja nodded a little when he began over her fiancé. ”He was a fine man,” she agreed with him. A man that could never be replaced. ”The strongest and bravest the North will ever know.”

The fact that Freyja had wanted to show up around here, out of her own will was something he could respect. Mainly because honestly if he rode out he’d be lost for days in the woods that much he knew for sure and that would just look plain silly. A lord getting lost, if this had happened to him as a knight no one would bother to actually talk about it. But as the newly pronounced lord of Aeldun, yeah no. His father probably wouldn’t like him getting lost in this darned place. Besides, it was still pretty cold and he wasn’t looking forward to actually spend a night outside of his warm chambers.

Finn shortly grinned before his face flattened out again. ’They did. But I wanted to find out if you would tell me myself or not, besides I’m not that keen on listening to greybeards.’ The youngster hummed, nodding at her words again. ’Because of the ongoing dispute for what was it… ground? I’m not here to rekindle old fights, certainly not.’ No he wasn’t, he was here to make the city as a whole great again. To build out a little army of his own, for the safekeeping of himself and the people of the city. Needed to set up a few things as well, protection details for the brewery and possible shops, but most of all people who wanted to trade with him. As their conversation shortly shifted to her late fiancé he shortly lowered his head. ’It’s because of him and all of the North that we are still alive. My deepest gratitude for that.’ Not that she could do much with gratitude but well, what was he supposed to say to a grieving lady.

Freyja knew the woods better than most people. She easily navigated her way through the thick forest, recognizing every little stream and landmark. These woods had been her home for years now, and she was fairly sure every Skarsgard had the ability to find its way out there. Other than that, her horse had automatically chosen the trail to Aeldun once it had noticed where they were going. Some animals were more clever than you expected them to be.
Apparently, he had known, but he had wanted her to tell him herself. Peculiar, to say the least. Freyja softly hummed, raising her brows a little, faintly smiling at the last word. ”Greybeards?” she couldn’t help but grin. Now that was one way to call them, most certainly. ”Yes, it was ground.” Her voice turned a bit more serious now. ”My family has used the grounds of the White Woods for many generations. They are our main income.” The red-haired Lady paused for a moment. Should she go there? Definitely. ”Your cousin raided our traps, destroying them and taking our prey. Only because he wanted to torment me.” Her blue eyes were locked in those of the younger man. ”I hope you are more of a man than he was, as he made both our lives an unnecessary struggle.” The topic moved on to her fiance, and she slowly nodded when he showed his gratitude. He and the others, including herself, had fought for the North. For the entirety of Avalance. If he truly was that grateful, she hoped he’d put it in his actions too, not his words alone.

Finn chuckled softly as she repeated him. Yeah, greybeards the whole bunch of them. Old people that wanted to force their vision on him. And if anything that just didn’t work for the youngster, it had never done and now wouldn’t be the start of it. No, if anything Finn might need some new advisors but honestly he didn’t even know where to start actually. Maybe with the woman in front of him. Though maybe he should actually give her a period of actual grieving time before he would ask her. Yeah, that seemed a bit more right to him already. Because if anything, she had deserved a place at his court even if it was for fighting in the war. He wanted to actually make her believe that she would be taken care off by him.

When Freyja talked further about the grounds that she had disputed over with his cousin he nodded. ’I’m not out to steal from you milady. I do intend on hunting on those grounds as well, but if you need me to pay for the use of your grounds whenever I go hunting, I will. I am not my cousin and I am not planning on becoming him as well.’ Was this a right decision? He didn’t know but it was one he made and one he would live by as well. Because that was the kind of person he was apparently becoming. ’If anything, I’d love for us to set up a trade connection as well, we could benefit both from that I think.’

Enough blood had been spilled over the snow of the Highlands. Perhaps it indeed was time for some old wounds to be stitched up for good. Or at least, for as long as the both of them would rule their houses, as you could never know what would happen after that. Freyja nodded a little as the younger man spoke. He was offering her peace. They would both use the hunting grounds, but he would keep in mind that her people needed those grounds in order to survive. It was their main source of income, as those pelts were traded for grains and the bones were made into weapons that could be used for hunting. ”That sounds fair,” she eventually agreed, looking at the Corbin as she nodded. She could only hope he would keep his word, though. ”I think a trade connection between our houses would indeed benefit the both of us.” Strange, how her conversation the last time she had been to Aeldun had been completely different from this. ”And for the people as well. We have all been through enough already.” She was certain her people, the hunters that worked for her, would be relieved to know that they wouldn’t have to find their traps ruined and have their preys stolen anymore.

If anything young Finn wasn’t out to shed more northern blood. In any kind of way. But they needed to eat as well, which meant that they needed to hunt. But he wouldn’t raid traps or anything. That was not how it worked for him and he wouldn’t be start doing those things. As far as he knew he wasn’t a vindictive man just yet and he was going to keep it that way for as long as he possibly could. Making the best decisions for the house and for himself and keeping Lady Skarsgard as a friend, seemed like a good choice to make in the end. ’Do you want me to put anything in writing, about that and our trade connection?’ That seemed like the best way for the both of them to keep up to their agreement right?

’How do you see it? The trade deal? What do you want? And what do we get?’ Finn smiled shortly at the woman. He wanted the best thing for both parties. Because in the end what was more important than having good business agreements? ’You have, more than I can ever imagine.’ Though he had been here, a few weeks before the battle though that didn’t count. ’I’ll take care of those closest to Aeldun as well.’

The White Woods weren’t exactly small, and she had always been surprised to hear that Lord Corbin had managed to ruin another hunt. It was because of that, that she knew he had been doing it on purpose, to try and get back on her. The redhead could only hope that the new Lord would be a bit more serious, but only time could tell. ”Yes, putting things on paper would be a good idea,” she nodded, quite happy that the man suggested it himself. She would’ve asked for it, but this was a little easier.
”Perhaps you can sell us your new ale once it’s ready,” she told him. ”For the rest, I think we should take our time and think about what we truly want from this deal.” She had quite a few things to offer him, after all. A soft hum left her mouth when he told her that she indeed had suffered enough, more than he could imagine. She was quiet for a moment. ”We could sell you pelts, as I can imagine you’re still not used to the cold,” she noticed, a little smirk appearing on her face, wondering if he was one of those people from the south that whined when the temperatures dropped.

Finn stood back up and walked over to his desk, rummaging a bit through it. Till he find a piece of paper, which was the size of a full page so more things could be added over time. With the paper and quill in one hand and an inkwell in the other he walked back to the fire smiling at Freyja. Writing something down on top of the paper, his handwriting was actually not one you would expect from a man. It was slender and almost even curly at some point. He put her name on it and his name right under it, mainly to make a statement here. Hat he was in fact serious about these matters.

The mention of his ale made him look up with a warm smile. ’The ale can be a great start yes. So I can send over my new and improved kind of ales towards you, I’m sure everyone will take advantage on that.’ The man hummed, writing it down. His new batch and future new ales he would create would be sent over to her village. Nodding at her advice to take time to think about what they wanted from each other. ’Maybe put in the fact that I can hunt on your grounds, and that me bringing my ale over is actually a way of paying my dues to using the land that is rightfully yours?’ A silence fell over them for a few seconds and he just hummed, taking a sip from his ale in the mean time before she mentioned something again. Making him chuckle. ’Ah yes. The cold. I can get used to it for sure, but maybe you can yes. I hope you already have set up a shop here in Aeldun as well to sell your pelts?’ That would also be a good move in the right direction.
