Of course, Asher had forced his crew to go on a massive detour in order to pay a visit to the Skarsgård castle. It had earned him a lot of complaining from his crew, who would now be removed from their families in the Lair for much longer, and even worse than that, they would be stuck in the cold for a good few weeks more. The journey from Caer Scion to the coast closest to the White Woods hadn’t been particularly easy, and neither was the ride to the keep of House Skarsgård. It had been years since he’d last shown his face around here, and for good reason. But this time, he had ample motive to return to the Highlands.

A death and a wedding. Willa’s joyful union with Lord Commander Alec Winchester had been the reason for him to travel all this way up north, but Freyja’s recent loss had given cause to extend the duration of his trip. Asher knew he wasn’t particularly well at consoling people, so he had allowed himself the liberty to have a few drinks beforehand, if only to loosen the tongue a little bit. With the necessary reservations, he had made his way over to the actual castle, introducing himself as Lord Asher Fabron, after which he was promptly guided inside. Now he only had to wait until the Lady herself had time to properly receive him.

the world was on fire and
no one could save me but you
The weeks slowly crept by nowadays. In the past, she had found herself running out of time quite often, but now she was often sitting in her office, waiting for the day to be done. There was enough work to be done. Something she struggled doing as she could barely concentrate on reading the first few sentences of a letter. And once the days were over, there were the nights. Where she was haunted by voices and images of the battle against those monsters. She could hear their hoarse screeches in the middle of the night, she could smell the rotten scent of dead flesh and she felt their teeth grazing over her fair skin. And it scared her to death. That wasn’t the worst of it, however. No, the thing that woke her up time after time was the sight of her betrothed being ripped apart by one of those monsters. When she awoke from those nightmares, sweaty and gasping for air, she tended to reach out for the spot next to her, only to remember that he was truly gone.
A visitor. Freyja had taken some time to put some things away and make herself look a little more presentable. People rarely visited her castle, and she hadn’t been expecting someone anytime soon. Once she was done, she made her way over to the hall where they had made her guest wait. The heavy, wooden doors were opened for her. She walked in, the black dress she was wearing rustling around her legs when she walked. Her blue eyes looked around, only to find the man. It almost felt like she was reliving an old memory. ”Lord Fabron,” she spoke up, greeting the man without the familiar careful smile on her face. There were some dark circles underneath her eyes, due to the lack of sleep she had had the past few weeks. ”I didn’t expect to see you this far north.”

As he waited for the red-haired lady to receive him, Asher started feeling quite nervous. He couldn’t pinpoint the exact reason. Maybe it was because he knew this was going to be a grimly-toned conversation. The young woman had been through a lot lately, having been exiled and having lost her fiancé. Asher didn’t deal particularly well with the feelings of others, and when it came to consoling others he was pretty much clueless. In most cases, he didn’t get much further than an awkward pat on the back and a ‘there, there’. Or maybe he was feeling rather awkward about what had happened all those years ago, and he was once again putting himself into another precarious position.

Asher started wondering whether he should’ve announced his arrival. Maybe she didn’t even feel like seeing him, but it was kind of too late now. He patiently waited, until the woman herself finally walked in, clad in a black gown to remind him once again that she was in mourning. He was dressed in black himself, but not entirely intentionally. Asher raised a brow at her when she actually addressed him by his title. Apparently they were right back to formalities now. “Freyja,” he spoke in greeting, still clinging to the old her. She looked tired. Not like the wide-eyed, optimistic, somewhat naïve woman he’d met all those years ago. “A close friend of mine got married in Caer Scion,” he explained, “I figured I’d drop by to pay my respects to you in person.” His throat was drying up as he spoke, his voice growing hoarser by the second. “I’m terribly sorry for your loss.” As if that would make it any better.

Freyja wasn’t sure what to think about the fact that he had come all this way to visit her humble castle again. The last time had been years ago, when they’d first met, and things had gotten horribly out of hand back then. There had only been one person she had ever told about what had happened between her and Lord Fabron, and that had been her fiancé. She knew how he had disliked the man, without even knowing him in person, and it had been the exact reason why they had been wanting to wait until the day they would get married. None of that mattered anymore, though. He was gone and she had been left behind.
The red-haired lady entered the hall, wearing a black gown that brushed over the tiles of the floor as she walked over to her guest. Instead of addressing him by his first name, she decided not to. Instead, she used his title, which seemed to surprise him. He didn’t greet her by hers, which immediately made her feel less in control of the situation. He told her about one of his close friends getting married in Caer Scion, and she already felt the heavy weight on her shoulders again the moment he mentioned a wedding. There was a little twitch in her lower lip when he started about paying his respects to her in person. Apparently, that had been the reason for his detour to her home. Freyja swallowed, trying to fight back the tears she could already feel burning behind her eyes. She didn’t want to cry in front of him, though. She had already been ashamed enough by shedding some tears under the watching eye of her High Lord. When he told her he was terribly sorry for her loss, she opened her mouth to say something. To thank him, as she probably should, but she couldn’t get the words over her lips. Her lower lip trembled a little. ”It’s not fair,” she eventually brought out, her voice incredibly hoarse as she could feel she was on the edge of her emotions taking over yet again.

Asher couldn’t really say why he had come all this way to express his sympathy for her loss. It was something he could have done over letter just as easily, without wasting days in time and a small fortune in resources. Maybe he had expected something else from this, something more similar to the last time he’d set foot in this particular castle, but instead of that, he now was to deal with her grief. And in all of Avalance, he was probably the worst person to do that.

At least her familiar red hair was back, which made her look a little more like the woman he knew. But that was where the similarities ended, too. She looked like the epitome of a woman in mourning. The real world had caught up with her at last, and Asher felt a little bad that he hadn’t been able to protect her from such harsh realities. He straightened his back a little more as he watched her, feeling a sudden burst of regret about coming here. There was a slight premonition on his part that this visit wouldn’t be beneficial to either of them. Talking about her late fiancé would probably only made her sadder, and Asher wasn’t in any position to console her. He felt an obnoxious lump form in his throat as he could see the shift in her facial expression. Asher took in a shaky breath and looked off, redirecting his gaze towards her once again when she spoke up. It wasn’t fair. For a second, he just stood there, debating what the right thing to do was here. This was a formal visit. She had called him by his proper title and last name, indicating that she wanted to keep some distance between the two of them. But he couldn’t stand the way she stood there by herself, wallowing in her own grief. “I know,” he softly said, walking up to her in order to pull her into a hug. He didn’t really know what to say in moments like these, but he did want her to know that she wasn’t alone in this.

The last time she had seen the man in front of her, had been during her banishment, when she had somehow ended up in his city. And now he was back here, up in the far North, paying his respects to her. She had to admit that Asher had been the last person she’d expected knocking on her door. The two of them hadn’t seen each other for years, which had probably been for the best. They had been highly unprofessional the first time that they’d met, something she most certainly wasn’t planning on doing again. She was a Lady, she couldn’t go sleeping around with everything that breathed. And for as far as she knew, he had a family of his own in the South.
She was still mourning, trying to figure out how she could possibly continue with her life now her sun and stars had been so roughly taken from her. Too many things had remained in the unsaid, too many time had been wasted. She’d do anything to have more time with him, but that was impossible now. Time couldn’t be turned back, not even the most powerful being in the realm would be able to do so. Freyja didn’t know why she told him it wasn’t fair. The words came straight from her heart, though. It was the truth. It wasn’t fair, but now, life wasn’t fair. Something she had forgotten about over the years. Her lower lip trembled a little at his words. He knew. An unintentional sniffle left her mouth the moment he pulled her into a hug. She wrapped her slender arms around him and nuzzled her nose against the fabric of his clothes. Suddenly, she felt weaker than she had ever been before. As if her legs could give in at any given moment. The red-haired woman closed her eyes in order to keep her tears from flowing freely. ”I want all of those monsters dead,” she spoke, her voice hoarse and raw from the emotions. She wanted them all dead so that there was none left that could ever put someone through this pain ever again.

Men like Tyrr were the people that were taken from you while you were still young, so you would know loss for the rest of your life. As much as he himself had suffered throughout life, Asher couldn’t recall losing someone so close to him. There was his mother, and he genuinely believed he might’ve been a better man right now if it wasn’t for her passing, but she had already passed before he had gotten old enough to remember anything about her. There was his first wife, whom he had loved at first but then had grown to loathe. It was incomparable with what Freyja had felt for her fiancé, or so he hoped for her. And there was his daughter, whom hadn’t been dead in the first place. He didn’t think the gods would be as kind as to have Tyrr return to Freyja as Cres was returned to him, however.

Her words played along in his mind like a broken record. It wasn’t fair, but then again, nothing much was fair about life. Most people were tormented by loss and hatred and heartbreak for months, years, and even decades. It made you wonder what even made it worth it to pull through so much suffering. Asher pulled her into a hug, not too tightly to allow her the option of breaking free again. He wasn’t sure whether he was out of line right now, but didn’t know how else he could communicate to her that he was here. Asher furrowed his brows at her words, which sounded vengeful and vindictive. It was unlike her. He pulled back a little, seeking eye contact with her. “I know you’re angry, Freyja,” he said, “but you can’t let this consume you.” He’d seen it many times, also in himself; people getting so obsessed with revenge, only to be left with nothing once they got it. It never brought the catharsis anyone hoped for. Instead, you only found that you wasted all the years spent on it.

Freyja wasn’t sure if she believed in the saying that time healed all wounds. Maybe the wound would become less painful over time, as she accepted the truth for what it was, but the scar would always stay with her, and the memories would be aching her heart every moment she thought back of them. She would never forget, though, not in a million lifetimes. She knew it was her duty to get married one day, to produce children for her family, but she started to doubt if that was what the Gods had in store for her now that they had taken Tyrr away from her so suddenly. A part of her had died with him that day, and that part of her was now buried with him.
The moment he pulled her into a hug, she felt her knees go weak. Her hands rested against him as she briefly nuzzled her face against his chest, trying to fight her salty tears back, not wanting them to spill all over his clothes. Besides, they were still standing in the hallway, and she didn’t want any of her people to see her like this. She told him that she wanted them dead. All of those monsters, the undead. Yet not dead enough for her likings. Asher pulled back, locking eyes with her. She struggled to look at him like that, but she did. He told her that she couldn’t let this consume her, even though she was angry. The pain was visible in her eyes. ”Then what am I supposed to do?” she asked him, her voice a desperate whisper. ”Those things have taken so many lives, and their kind will continue to take if nobody stops them.” Which was why they all had to die, in her eyes. For good, this time. ”They took the person I loved.” Of course she wanted revenge. She had ended the life of the monster that had actually ended the life of the man she loved, but it wasn't enough.

Freyja was young, and when you were young you often failed to realize that you still had years, or probably even decades ahead of you. Grief, no matter how severe, would pass. Time went on and people simply forgot. Memories faded over time, and as you continued with your life, you noticed that you thought about the people that were left behind less than the day before. It seemed impossible to believe, especially to someone who was as in love as Freyja had seemed to be. But living without the people you loved was very much possible, which was probably the cruellest reality of all.

It felt a little strange, holding her like that. She wasn’t that much shorter than he was, and Asher found himself pondering about how long he needed to stand here like this. His hand slowly stroked her back for as long as they stood this close to each other. Her words alarmed him, however, and he wasn’t sure whether this was the right moment to speak up, but he did. Freyja’s words made his face contort into some troubled expression, lightly shaking his head. “You move forward,” he said. “Killing those things is not gonna bring him back, and it’s not going to make you feel better either.” He let out a sigh, not believing that it was him trying to be the voice of reason for once. “I know it doesn’t feel like it, but your pain will pass.” And ten years from now, it was as this had never happened. It would shock her how much this had never happened.

the world was on fire and

The only losses she had known had been those of her parents and older brother. The passing of her father and brother had been rather tragic, as they had perished at sea. She had become the head of their house after their passing, against the odds of her never being appointed to such a position. They had never raised her to rule, only to do as she was told. To do her duty as a woman in this world. Things had ended up being rather different, as now she could make her own decisions, and those that were to impact the remaining members of her family. Suddenly, she was reminded that she looked an awful lot like her own mother right now, after the passing of her father. The woman had locked herself away in her room, pushing away her own children, only to slowly drown in her own sorrow.
His words were hard to believe. How on earth could she move forward from something like this? Never had anyone made her feel that special as her fiancé had done, and right now, she was thoroughly convinced that he was irreplaceable. Her love for him would never fade. She would return to his grave, refusing to let the memory of him die. Deep down, she knew that killing those monsters wasn’t going to bring him back, that they weren’t going to make her feel better. Freyja blinked a few times as she looked at him, a lone tear dripping down her cheek. ”But it’s unbearable right now,” she whispered as he told her the pain would pass. Eventually. But right now, she wasn’t sure if she would be able to handle it before then.

It was probably easy for him to say to get over it. Asher didn’t know how much Tyrr had meant to her, and even if he did, he had never lost anyone like that before. Well, except for Cres, who hadn’t even been gone in the first place. And maybe he was just a cold, unfeeling asshole for telling her these things. The war hadn’t even been that long ago. It was only normal that she was feeling this way, right? In all reality, he didn’t quite believe that there was a ‘normal’ for these types of things. Everyone dealt with it differently, and some people didn’t deal at all. Asher just wanted to make sure that Freyja didn’t end up falling into that last category, seeing as exacting revenge was dealing with the cause of the loss, not with the loss itself.

But he could only do so much to influence her. She was her own woman, and if this is how she wanted to go about things, that was the way it was going to go. His expression softened when he noticed the lone tear running down her cheek. He lightly shook his head again. “You’re strong enough. I know you are,” he told her. This was a young woman who’d lost her father, her brothers, and now her fiancé. Life hadn’t been kind to her as of late, but yet she persevered. “All you need to do is keep going.” Strangely enough, it really was that easy sometimes. She just needed to do what she had always done, except without this specific person by her side. In due time, it would be as if she had always done it that way.

She had half a mind to gather some men and go to the source of the problem. To hunt down every single one of those monsters so that there wouldn’t be any left to put people through this pain again. She hadn’t been the only one losing someone dear to her heart to them. Hundreds of families had been affected by this tragic war. However, that had been with all the wars that had been fought in the past, and it would be the same with the wars of the future. Every war demanded casualties. And Tyrr had been one of the unlucky ones.
How she hated the tear that slowly ran down her pale skin. She didn’t want to cry in front of her guest. Not that Asher would ever he the usual guest paying her castle a visit. Not to her, at least. The past couldn’t be erased and fact was that he had left a mark on her life. She swallowed when he told her she was strong enough to get through this. She had gone through it before, but this felt different somehow. Eventually, she slowly nodded, reaching up for her chin to brush the wetness of her tear again. She just had to keep going. ”I’m sorry for welcoming you with all this,” she apologized, letting out a deep breath as she looked at him. It wasn’t that professional, yet she wondered if they would ever be to begin with. ” Let's go somewhere else,” she then said, lowering her hands again so she was no longer touching him. He was probably tired from the journey, and she’d rather not continue their conversation out here.

Asher did not even want to picture a life in which his sole purpose would be to put an end to the undying. It was an endless task, without much in the way of reward. Surely, you were bound to safe some lives in between, but it would cost you everything. He clearly recalled the day he had met Freyja. The way in which she had held her head high in an attempt to embody her father as much as she could. She was an attractive young woman with a quick mind and a sharp tongue, with far more potential than she realized, but it would only be wasted on this ridiculous quest to end all undying.

That was why they were called undying, right? Asher reached out to wipe the tear off of her cheek with the stroke of a single finger. A little too affectionate for his taste, but he couldn’t bear to see her cry. He had seen her in a far more vulnerable state, and yet this was the thing that made his heart twinge. The young woman nodded, and Asher could only hope that his words would encourage her on the long-term, instead of just now. And then she apologized. “It’s alright,” he muttered. To be honest, he hadn’t expected it to go very differently from this. Their meeting was emotional and complicated as it was, without this giant loss of hers getting in between. “Where do you wanna go?” he asked, cautiously looking around. Usually, that meant getting a drink, but Asher had learnt that Freyja and red wine did not mix very well. And he knew how easy it was for him to make the same mistake twice, so he figured he better not put himself in the same precarious position as before.

There were so many thoughts going through her head these days. Maybe the Gods had wanted her to take this task upon her shoulders. To try and put an end to those devilish beasts that roamed these lands without having any purpose other than to rip families apart. They weren’t part of nature, simply a mistake created by mankind. A mistake that had to be made undone by someone. They knew how to kill these beasts, so she wondered why they hadn’t done that already. Right now, she had gotten to the point where she really didn’t know what else to do other than to believe her own crazy theory.
Asher was there to call her out on it, though. She looked straight at him as his thumb brushed the lonely tear from her cheek. Her soft skin being touched by his calloused hand almost brought some vivid memories back, but she refused to think of them. He told her it was alright, and she believed him when he did. She then suggested taking their conversation somewhere else. Maybe where they could sit, be a little more comfortable than standing here in the hallway. He asked her where she wanted to go. ”The living room,” she answered him. The setting was less formal than her office, yet she felt like the latter was everything but the right pick for today. She wasn’t going to talk to him about these kinds of things in her office. ”I suppose you’d want to sit down for a while,” she noticed, stepping away from him and nodding a little with her head to make clear that he’d just had to follow her, as she knew this castle better than anyone else.

In all reality, it was none of his business what Freyja wanted to do with the rest of her life. He would soon depart for Kraken’s Lair again, and they would not see each other again for years to come. For all he knew, this could even be the last time. He held absolutely no power over her, and neither did he fool himself by thinking that he could influence her with words. She was a grief-stricken widow, and she would still be once he had left. If she wanted to embark on this insane quest in the name of her deceased fiancé, she would. Part of him already dreaded the day that he would open the letter notifying him of her passing.

The stark contrast of her pale skin and his sun-tanned hand held his gaze for a little longer than it probably should. For a second he was brought right back to that one fateful night, where she had given herself to him completely. Right now, he couldn’t help but feel guilty that it had been him, and not her fiancé. No matter how he turned it, it simply wasn’t right. Freyja suggested they go to the living room, to which he hesitantly nodded. “Alright,” he said, already committing himself to not staying longer than, say, an hour. And no drinks. “Can’t say no to that,” he said. The thought of sitting down for a bit was highly welcome. “I wasn’t made for horseback riding.” Especially not long trips such as these. If anything, he was made to be ridden instead.

She wasn’t sure if she was convinced enough to let go of her wicked idea just yet. Perhaps she was only saying those things because she was in dire need of finding something to focus on. Losing someone dear to you was painful, and Freyja was intent on overpowering the pain by hurting something else. Which would be done by exterminating their entire species. She knew it would be a task that would require a giant sacrifice, but at this moment, she felt like she was capable of doing such a thing.
The feeling of his hand against her skin was painfully familiar. The memory of their night together would always be there. And every time they crossed paths, she would be reminded of it. Now, she didn’t want him to stand out here for longer than he needed, so she suggested they’d go somewhere else. Somewhere where they could talk in peace, maybe sit down. She flashed him a faint smile when he mentioned that he wasn’t made for horseback riding. ”I’m glad you came by, though,” she said, her voice a little softer as she guided him through the hallways of her humble castle. Soon, they reached the right room, and she let him in. ”Make yourself at home,” she said, motioning over at one of the comfortable couches. The hearth was burning, as these parts of Avalance were even rather cold during the spring.

Tyrr’s departure had undoubtedly left her with a giant hole in her life. Suddenly, she would find herself going to bed alone and waking up alone, which was a godawful feeling. Asher couldn’t imagine how horrible it would be. On trips like these, he already found himself reaching out for Skaði in the dark of night, only to find out that there was nothing but a cold pillow there. It was terrifyingly lonely, and Asher didn’t envy her one bit.

Of course, she needed something else to put her mind to, no matter how dysfunctional it really was. Hunting the entirety of the undying species seemed a little excessive, though. Asher would rather have her pick up a different kind of ‘hobby’. Maybe she should try knitting. He’d heard it was quite calming. Asher raised a slightly surprised brow when she said she was glad he’d passed by. “You are?” he asked in slight belief. His awkwardness didn’t seem like it would do much good, but at least someone appreciated it. As they reached the living area, he quickly picked the seat closest to the hearth, seeing as he’d gotten quite cold. “I still can’t believe you people don’t just move south. How the hell do you bother with this cold every single day?” And of course he went right back to complaining. If there was one thing he couldn’t handle, it was the northern cold. Hopefully this really was the last time he’d set foot in this miserable place.

Her heart was aching, and she hadn’t found out how to make the pain less. Some say time would heal it, but she wasn’t sure how long she could wait around for time to heal it. Or if she even wanted it to be healed in the first place. She was afraid that she would forget things at a certain point. That the familiar scent of her fiancé would slowly disappear on the belongings he had left behind, on the brown fur that she still cherished deeply. She was afraid that the image of him would fade in her mind. Only thinking about those things made her want to burst out into tears, so she quickly pushed the thoughts away, as she didn’t need Asher to brush more tears off of her face.
A soft hum left her mouth when he questioned her sincere comment about him passing by. ”I am,” she said. At least she wouldn’t be by herself for a little while, drowning in her own misery, as that had been what she had been doing most these days. Losing her mind while she tried to control the deep emotions she was feeling. Freyja softly scoffed when he started to complain about the cold. ”Well, I’d rather be cold than be sweating all day long underneath that burning sun of yours.” Besides, her pale skin wouldn’t be able to handle the bright sun of the South. Especially not now that summer was coming. ”You want a drink or something?” she asked him, just a formality, while she walked over to a cabinet herself, fetching herself a glass so she could pour herself some ale.

Sometimes, it was terrifying how easily you could forget about people. When he had first learnt of the passing of his wife and daughter, he had thought about them every single day for the first few months. While Cres had always lingered in his mind, he started noticing that the image he had in his mind of Zypha became increasingly vaguer, to the point where he could barely recall what she looked like anymore. He couldn’t exactly remember the way her voice sounded, what it felt like holding her at night, or how she used to say his name. Then again, maybe that wasn’t normal mourning. Maybe he was just that heartless of a man.

Freyja being happy with his company could only mean one thing; she was feeling alone. “There’s other people here, right? Like your sisters and such?” he inquired. Hopefully, they were around to support her through this difficult time. He didn’t like the thought of her being trapped in here by herself, with only a few indifferent guards to watch her. It didn’t take him long to start complaining, to which Freyja had her own little rebuttal. Asher smirked. “I’m sure a little bit of a tan would look good on you,” he said. She hadn’t stuck around long enough in Kraken’s Lair to actually acquire one though, or so it seemed. A drink. Oh god, oh fuck. This was the moment to actually demonstrate to himself that he had at least a little bit of self-control. “Yeah, sure.” Wait, no, that wasn’t right. “Some ale’s fine.” The rum here was no good, if there ever even was any. But this wasn’t exactly what he was supposed to be doing. He figured a single drink wouldn’t hurt, though. It would distract him from the soreness from riding here on horseback, as well as help him ignore the terrible cold. He would just have to decline the second one.

She knew that Tyrr wouldn’t want her to become like this. Starting something that would never end instead of doing something that could actually make a difference for those around her. Was she going to dedicate her life to slaying the monsters that had taken a part of her life from her? She would only hand them the rest of her life as well. Right now, she was so filled with emotions, that she couldn’t really reason with herself. She was sad, angry, tired, and lonely. All at once. Which was the exact reason she could appreciate the visit of Asher, as he could at least get her mind off of all those things for a little while.
Freyja slowly nodded when he asked about her sisters. ”They’re around, sometimes.” They had lives of their own, though. And well, she ended up sitting in this castle by herself. As she put it like that, it truly was sad. A soft sigh left her mouth. It wasn’t as if it mattered. Her twin sister barely talked to begin with, which meant she also wouldn’t really be able to keep her from having these dangerous thoughts, as she didn’t voice them to her either. Freyja smiled when he mentioned that a tan would look good on her. ”Why, thank you,” she said, trying to sound somewhat offended, but not really. When she asked him for a drink, he agreed, requesting some ale. She poured him a glass, taking hold of both and walking back towards him, handing over a glass before sitting down herself. On a different seat, just to keep some proper distance. ”I think the pale suits my red hair better, though,” she said, bringing her glass up to have a little sip. ”I wouldn’t be able to imagine you with pale skin,” he then noticed, narrowing her eyes just a little. That would look just weird.
