Somehow, a fight had broken out in his favourite bar. Usually, the place was rather calm, with patrons that knew how to behave. Jordan hadn’t even noticed what had actually happened. He only heard two men yelling at each other, and before he knew it, a bottle ended up being thrown at him. He wished he’d been agile enough to dodge it, but alas. Now he was anxiously clutching his forehead as he hurried to get out of the chaotic crowd that was still punching and shoving each other. He could feel the blood run down his face, which couldn’t be good. There was no way he was going to end up as some scarred freak.

He didn’t dare to draw a breath until he finally stood outside, relatively safe. There were still plenty of sounds coming from inside, but it all seemed so far away now. Tired and afraid, Jordan stumbled onto the street, pulling back his hand to look at it. It was covered in a red substance. Blood that was undoubtedly his own. The mere sight of it made him go pale, and before he knew it his legs gave out underneath him and he fell to the floor with a dull thud.

PRIMUM NON NOCERUM
After a long day at work Pax was finally making her way back home. Today had been a good day. She had helped five women deliver a healthy baby. That wasn’t something she took for granted. Frequently, the delivery of a child came along with complications that often led to death. Men fish the sea, dig in the earth, and fought battles, and die. Women birth children in blood and pain, and die. It made her wonder if she ever wanted to carry a child. Perhaps it was for the better that she was an unwed nurse.

Pax was passing through one of the many small and dark alleys of the city when she heard a muffling sound. When she turned around to see where it came from she spied a man lying face-down. From the looks of it, the man was hurt. One of his arms was covered in blood, she realized. Pax looked around to see whether there were others, but as far as she could tell she was the only one around. Carefully, she came closer until she was just one feet apart. ”Do you hear me, sir?” she spoke softly as if she was scared that anyone else would hear it. Whatever happened to this man, his injuries needed tending.

In many ways, Jordan was all bark, no bite. He had a big mouth, but when push came to shove, he was often too afraid to do much of anything. He didn’t have much in the way of physical prowess, and his abundance of jackets and overcoats was only hiding the chubby dad bod of a middle-aged man. For protection, he mostly relied on the guards that he usually kept around at all times, since he wouldn’t be of much use in a fight. He wasn’t particularly strong nor swift, so he needed others to do the dirty work for him. If only he’d brought his guards along today.

Moreover, he didn’t deal well with injury or pain. Seeing an open wound gushing blood made him feel nauseous, and he wasn’t exactly proud to admit that he had fainted after the delivery of his firstborn and only child. He was particularly squeamish about his own well-being, so once he realized that he had a decently sized wound somewhere on his forehead, it sent him to the ground right away. For a good couple of seconds, he was completely gone. A faint voice was audible after a little while, asking him if he could hear. He forced his eyes open, feeling completely disoriented. “Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. I’m okay,” he muttered, wanting to get up but feeling too dizzy to do so. “Just taking a quick nap.” It was a very sad attempt at a joke, but he wanted to circumvent the embarrassment of fainting in public.

PRIMUM NON NOCERUM
Pax wasn’t too sure if it would do her any good if she was going to help this man. He was probably one of those drunkards who got themselves into a bar fight and ended up injured. But as far as she could judge from a distance, the wound was pretty bad and needed to be tented. If not, it could get infected and even lead to death. As a nurse Pax knew it was her task to help all those that are injured and she had to help him.

The man replied when she asked whether he could hear her. He told her she was fine and that he was just taking a quick nap, but it was clear that he didn’t just lay down in a random alley for some shut-eye. ”Sure,” Pax mumbled. ”You are wounded,” she told him. ”And someone needs to take care of it or it will get corrupted.”  She had to help this man, but in order to that she had to bring him to her place where she had the right tools. But she was definitely not capable of carrying a middle-aged man back to her house, so hopefully he was still able to walk.

Being passed out for a few seconds allowed him to temporarily not feel the pain of the flesh wound in his forehead. But as soon as he opened his eyes again, he felt the stinging pain and the nausea in the pit of his stomach. He felt hot and cold at the same time. It was as if the colour was literally draining out of his face right now, along with the blood. This couldn’t be good. However, he forgot about it once more when he opened his eyes to see a surprisingly attractive woman look down upon him. Perhaps he had died and ended up in some ideal afterlife, or perhaps he had just gotten very, very lucky.

Unfortunately, she didn’t seem to believe his jokey lie, which meant that she now was aware of the fact that he had passed out. She told him that he was wounded, which Jordan had noticed already. He reached up to explore the wound, only to notice the sticky liquid on his forehead again. For a second, he feared he was going to faint again. “Can you take care of it?” he quickly asked. He wasn’t sure whether he was going to be able to find an actual doctor all by himself. And, well, maybe he could get to know her a little bit better over stitching him up.

PRIMUM NON NOCERUM
At the nunnery Pax had threated lots of men that suffered from wounds. Many of them inflicted by battle, but there was also plenty of men that got injured after a drunk brawl. Most of the times they suffered minor injuries, though she had seen men that were so badly injured after a brawl that it took weeks before they recovered. Pax had always wondered why men were stupid enough to end up in these kind of situation.

The man lifted his head up and reached up his hand to touch the wound. From the look on his face she could tell that he was rather anxious. He asked her whether she could take care of it. Pax nodded. ”Fortunately for you I’m a nurse, so yes, I can take care of it,” she answered him. ”But we need to get you to my place, because I needs some medical tools.” Her place was not too far away from here, so if he was able to walk for a bit they were able to make it. ”Do you think you can get up?” she asked him.

Jordan just hoped he would survive this. He hardly ever got wounded, but he had heard horrifying stories about men getting the smallest cut, it getting infected, and ending up dying. It would be a fate most tragic if he were to pass like that. He didn’t really know how bad the wound in his forehead looked, but from the way it was bleeding, he guessed it was pretty severe. Jordan was pretty sure he would pass out again once he laid eyes on it. Right now, he could only hope that he would make it through. And that he wouldn’t be left with an ugly scar.

A nurse! How fortunate! Jordan could almost bring himself to smile through the sickly feeling in the pit of his stomach. “Uh, yeah, right,” he muttered as she said that he needed to get to her place. She needed tools… Oh, gods, did that mean she really was going to stitch him up? He wasn’t sure whether he was ready for that. “Yeah, of course, no problem,” he answered her question. With quite some effort, he got back up on his legs, triumphantly smiling. “See? Easily done.” He still felt rather weak in the knees, but he figured he could manage for now. “Where do I go?” he asked. At least his misfortune had caused him to be able to go home with a pretty woman.

PRIMUM NON NOCERUM
Right now, Pax wasn’t much use for him. In order to treat his wound she needed at least some tools that would help her to clean out his wound and make sure it would heal nicely. Her house wasn’t too far away from here, but she wasn’t too sure if the man would be able to walk in his current state. He seemed to agree with Pax when she proposed to go to her place so she could help him. When she asked whether he could get up on his own he answered yes. Pax watched him as he tried to get up. With quite the effort he managed to get back on his feet. ”Just follow me,” she said when he asked where to go. Pax started walking into the direction of her house, but made sure that she kept an eye on her new patient. ”If you feel like we have to stop for a small break, please let me know,” she told him as she continued walking. Hopefully they would manage to get to her place without too much hassle.

The mere thought of someone stitching up his forehead made a shiver run down his spine. He’d never had to get stitches for anything before, but he didn’t need to have it happen to him to figure out that it was probably really painful. Picturing a needle entering his skin made him physically cringe, and Jordan feared that it would make him pass out yet again. But he had to pull through somehow. He had already embarrassed himself in front of this very attractive young lady once, and twice would be two times too many.

Jordan got up on his feet somehow, and the woman asked him to follow. It didn’t even cross his mind that he was following a stranger home. For all he knew she knew exactly who he was, and this was some elaborate ploy to rob him or something. She told him to speak up if he needed a break. “Oh, don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine,” he assured her. He trailed after her a little bit, shamelessly admiring the feminine shape of her body. “What’s your name anyway?” he asked her, trying to catch up with her. Maybe he could get something more than a medical check-up out of this.

PRIMUM NON NOCERUM
The man told him that he would be fine, but Pax had her doubts. Not only was the man hurt, but he was probably also drunk. So she wouldn’t be surprised if he went down on the floor again half way. But the man assured her that he was doing fine. ”I hope so,” she murmured quietly. As they walked towards her house the man asked her about her name. ”Pax,”’ she answered. ”Yours?” Pax slowed somewhat down after seeing the man struggle with keeping up with her. Normally she would have been home already, probably enjoying some supper. But supper had to wait. First she had to make sure she would tend the wounds of this stranger.

Of course, he couldn’t have her thinking that he was some huge wimp that fainted at the first trace of blood. She probably already thought that, though, so he had to compensate a little bit. He made sure to walk upright, even though he still felt very light-headed. Keeping up with her firm pace proved to be a little more difficult than he expected, but at least he didn’t topple over. The young woman introduced herself as Pax. “Short and sweet. I like it,” he said, eyeing her a little bit. “I’m Jordan Redmayne.” Perhaps it was a dumb idea to give her his full name, but he very much wanted her to know that he had at least some kind of status around here. She didn’t look like the type of woman that hailed from Dragonwatch, which prompted his next question. “Are you from around here?” he inquired. She looked like she could be from Ashax, or maybe even Lavarr. She had that exotic kind of beauty about her.

PRIMUM NON NOCERUM
The man’s name was Jordan Redmayne. A name that sounded oddly familiar, though Pax could not say why. Perhaps she had treated a patient with the same name. Pax met quite a lot of people through her work as a nurse and midwife so she heard about a lot of names. So many, that is was hard to remember them all.

Jordan asked her whether she was from around here. Pax was not really a native to Dragonwatch or the Crownlands in general. As far as she knows her origins where from Ashax, but they were brought to the Crownlands at a very young age. Her father died when she was only a few years old, so she became an orphan and was being cared for at a nunnery. That’s where she learned the art of healing. ”Yes,” she lied. ”I grew up here.” Pax preferred to not tell too much about herself to strangers. ”What about you?” she asked to avoid having to go into more detail.

The woman didn’t see to recognize his name. Either that, or she simply didn’t care for things such as titles and status. Most people in Dragonwatch did know his name, as he was the local Master of Finances to the Crown. But perhaps she was too busy lending her hand to wounded strangers to care about matters of politics and finance. In that case, all the more power to her.

Much to his surprise, she was from here. She grew up around here, which made it all the more curious that she didn’t seem to know who he was. Or that she had never even caught his eye before. “I’m from a small village near the southern tail of the Iron Ridge,” he told her. He himself sometimes forgot that he wasn’t born and raised in Dragonwatch. His hometown seemed so far away now, mostly because he hardly set foot in it anymore. “But I’ve lived here for over twenty years now.” Jordan loved talking about himself, and her sudden question had distracted him from the fact that she wasn’t being entirely truthful. He really didn’t even notice her lying.

PRIMUM NON NOCERUM
Pax had moved to Dragonwatch recently. Before she had been living in different cities and working at a different hospital and infirmaries. The capital city was pretty new to her, but this was her home now. Currently, she was working as a midwife, assisting mothers in childbirth. A job that was came with more challenges than she had hoped for, but the pay was good. At least she could take care of herself as a woman. Something not a lot of women were able to.

Just like her, Jordan was not from Dragonwatch. Instead he told her that he came from a small village near the southern tail of the Iron Ridge, but he had lived here for 20 years already. A lot of people that lived in the capital city came originally from other places, but often seeking for a better life in the big city. From what she had heard was that Dragonwatch even a nobody of low descent could become rich and powerful. To be success full it was wit and a great amount of luck that you needed. Hopefully she would be lucky enough to build up even better life for herself than she already got.

"We're are almost there," she announced after some silence. The prospect of reaching her house and enjoying the comfort of a warm supper cheered Pax mightily. Though she was aware that it could take a while before she could finally enjoy it. First he had to make sure that Jordan was patched up. "Here we are," she said, her hand reaching down in her pouch to grab the key. "Get inside," she said, gesturing towards the door. "Please seat yourself. I will get what you need. You want anything to drink in the meantime?" Best was to get rid of him as soon as possible, but the least she could do was offer him a small drink. Although it would do him probably more harm than good to give him anything alcoholic at this point.

Jordan briefly side-eyed her as they walked, trying to make sure that he had in fact never seen her before. He’d lived in Dragonwatch for so long now, and he was sure that a woman with her appearance would have drawn his attention about once or twice. It could always be the case that their paths simply had never crossed before, up until this very unfortunate meeting.

As they continued to walk, Jordan still felt the blood drip down his face, and he was fairly sure he looked pretty horrific right about now. Half his forehead must be covered in red now, and he didn’t even want to lay his eyes on the nasty gash that was undoubtedly there. He tried to ignore the pain as much as he could, and weirdly enough, it wasn’t even all that bad. The worst of it was the fact that he still felt a little weak everywhere, as if the life was draining from him. He couldn’t help but let out a relieved breath when she said they were almost at her place.

Obviously, he didn’t need to be told twice when she told him to get in. Jordan stumbled inside, nearly succumbing to the very first chair he saw. He sighed as he sat down, glad to finally be off his legs. “Some whiskey? For the pain?” he tried. Whiskey wasn’t exactly the cheapest drink, and he wondered whether she was the kind of woman to even have liquor in the house, but he hoped she was. “Ale is also fine,” he then said. She was doing him a favor by patching him up, after all, and he didn’t want to be too demanding just yet.

PRIMUM NON NOCERUM
When she asked Jordan whether he wanted something to drink he suggested whiskey, but ale was also fine. Both ale and whiskey were absent in this house. Pax never drank anything alcoholic. Throughout her life she had seen too many drunken fools that got themselves or others hurt that she promised herself to not drink ever. ”I have neither ale nor whiskey,” she told him. ”I only have water, milk, and some honeyed wine.” The honeyed wine was a leftover from when her sister had visited her. ”If you want anything for the pain, there is milk of the poppy,” she suggested. Meanwhile Pax had started searching in one of her drawers for the tools that she needed. Some clean linen and tools to sew up the wound. Hopefully Jordan wasn’t too over-sensitive for pain.

Of course, the damned woman did not have ale nor whiskey. Why would anyone bother asking someone what kind of drink they wanted if they really had only one thing to begin with? Jordan dreaded the thought of having to drink water through all of this. He didn’t think he could endure the pain without anything to temporarily numb it, and he hadn’t drunk nearly enough down at the tavern to do so. Water, milk, and wine. Those were his options. Jordan sighed. “The wine will do,” he muttered, clearly not very amused by this.

But there was poppy milk to somewhat numb the pain, which caused him to raise his brows in positive surprise. “Yes, please,” he quickly said. “I really can’t sit through this.” Without some kind of numbing agent, she would have him in this chair kicking and screaming for as long as it took her to stitch up the wound, that much he was sure of. “Do you have a rag of some sorts? My hands are filthy,” he said, looking down at the bright-red stains that covered his palms. He really couldn't be seen like this outside, now could he?

PRIMUM NON NOCERUM
This was a note to herself, make sure you always have some strong liquor at home. Not only would it satisfy the needs of those wanting something strong to drink, but it could also be helpful for when she had to tend someone’s injuries. Jordan didn’t seem to be too pleased when Pax told him that there was no whiskey nor ale, but wine would do. He also wanted the milk of the poppy that she proposed. Pax opened a small cabinet in which she had stored both the wine and the poppy milk and returned to Jordan with two glasses. ”There you go,” she said as she served him the two cups. Jordan had asked for a rag to clean his hands as they were covered in blood. ”Would this suffice?” she asked, giving him a piece of cloth that she had used before to clean the stove. ”Alright, let me check that cut that you have there.” Pax seated herself on a chair next to him and leaned forward to inspect the wound. It wasn’t too deep, but it still needed stitching. ”I will have to clean it first, which might hurt a little,” she said, reaching for some clean cloth. Hopefully, he wasn’t too much of a wimp.

Mixing poppy milk and alcohol was probably not the greatest idea, but Jordan was no medical professional, so he didn’t think twice about it. If only he had concerned himself with matters of physical health instead of finances, he might have been better off right now. Fortunately for him, he had passed out right in front of a nurse. And not just any nurse; it was an attractive, female one that stocked milk of the poppy in her house. He couldn’t have gotten much luckier than this, could he? He was given two glasses, one with the milk and one with the wine. “Thank you,” he said, eagerly taking them. He downed the milk first, hoping that it would kick in swiftly, and then the wine for taste.

Putting down the two glasses, he was given a rag to wipe his hands with. It wasn’t exactly clean. “It’ll do,” he concluded, taking it from her and wiping the blood off with it. Since some of it had dried already, not everything came off, but he’d give it another try later on. The cut needed to be taken care of first. He sat still as she inspected the wound. It wasn’t very deep, but he was bleeding like a pig. She stated that it needed cleaning first, and told him that it could hurt. The mere mentioning of pain already made him anxious. “How bad is it?” he carefully asked, fear apparent in his voice. Maybe he didn’t really need stitches. Maybe a bandage would suffice.

PRIMUM NON NOCERUM
Pax studied the wound on his head. It wasn’t too deep, but it definitely needed stitching. Carefully she started whipping off the blood from his face. Jordan asked how bad it was, sounding rather feared. There was no need to be scared, but stitching it would definitely hurt a little. Besides, there was a chance that it would not heal completely and some fibrous connective tissue would develop, leaving a scar on his face. ”I’ve seen worse,” she answered him with a faint smile. Once she was done cleaning the wound she reached out for the tools that were needed for stitching. ”I will have to stitch it, which will probably sting a little,” she warned him.
