Finally, some excitement. The recent transgressions within Avalance had fanned the flames of rebellion in the most southern region of the country. Nasir couldn’t say he had expected this sudden development on Lady Illeon’s part, but he couldn’t say he was dissatisfied with it. After all, more power for Zehirah meant more power for him. As long as that was the case, he would gladly support her in any war effort she saw fit. But in order to wage a war, they needed allies. There were a handful of houses they could trust to offer their support for sure, but a large part of Avalance was still up for grabs. As long as they played their cards right, Nasir expected that they should be fine.

Today, he would be meeting with Lady Mahli, although it was somewhat informally. He hadn’t spoken to her before, and since she had taken over the position of her late father, he figured it was about time they got acquainted a little better. Nasir had asked her to come over to the palace, where his servants had prepared an exuberant meal on one of the building’s many balconies. Once the young woman was escorted in, Nasir got up and smiled. “Lady Mahli,” he greeted her. “It’s good to finally meet you.” He sounded genuine, because he was. He was curious to find out what the woman in front of him was like.

One look at her was enough to know she was no commoner, yet someone from the mainland would never expect a Lady to reveal as much skin as Kalea liked to do. She wore the colors of her city with pride, the falling sun represented in her decision. The dress was a unique one, where her top was nothing more than a bra, a see-through cloth hanging from the middle, going all the way down to her waist where it wrapped around her body and fell to the ground, leaving the front bare so it looked like a golden waterfall. The skirt, which started at her hips, was a dark red with golden tones, which matched the color of her top. The same see-through cloth was wrapped from the sides of the bra, around her upper arms, leaving her shoulders bare but wrapping against her upper arms and back. Her hair was tied up, coming down in perfect curls of brown.

Today, she would be meeting with Lord Nasir Inclàn. She hadn’t had the pleasure of meeting him before, as the young Lady had never indulged in politics. After all, it had never been her job to take over. Haku should have. He deserved it more than any other. Sadly, life did not always grant you what you deserved. Now, the Mahli sisters were all that was left to keep the house alive in a time of war.

Kalea pulled her lips up in a curious smile as she laid eyes upon the man. “Lord Nasir,” she greeted him, her smile widening. Nasir was the brother of the man who was going to marry Zehirah. Being born in a rather unknown house, the Inclàns were doing incredibly well in making a name for themselves. Kalea had heard that there was a planned alliance with the Crownlands as well, but perhaps it was for the best that death came before the vows in that case, leaving their youngest sister an Inclàn, loyal to the true Queen. “The pleasure is entirely mine.

A sly smile appeared on his face as he saw the young Lady Mahli. Her choice of clothing was provocative to say the least, especially for anyone hailing from the northern regions of Avalance. Nasir, however, had gotten used to the women from Ashax dressing rather sparsely. Down here, the weather allowed for it, and sometimes even demanded it. Needless to say, her look caught the eye, which in turn caused him to grow more curious about her.

The woman had manners, fortunately, but Nasir was curious to find out the extent of those very manners. Some women were polite to a fault, which eventually often came to bore him. They did everything, said everything, just because they felt like they head to. Lady Mahli struck him as the type of woman who would speak her mind if push came to shove, which would definitely make for some interesting scenarios. He gestured at one of the servants waiting around in anticipation of his commands. The young woman immediately pulled back a chair for the Lady. “Please, have a seat, milady,” he offered. “I took the liberty of selecting our dishes for tonight, I hope you don’t mind.” Nasir had a peculiar taste in most things, and he didn’t hesitate about enforcing his taste onto others, as she would soon come to find out. “The kitchen staff has prepared some exotic delicacies for us tonight.” He was sure they wouldn’t disappoint; they never did. “In the meantime, I would very much like to get to know you,” he asked, raising a curious brow. As a newly appointed Lady, he was sure she had plenty of things to share.

Kalea was not a typical lady in any sense of the word. The girl had always been the one spoiled by her father. Her sister had a mind of politics, her brother would have been the Lord. And she? She would just be the pretty girl who would find a husband with ease, because what man would complain? All she ever had to do was smile and behave. The latter had posed a bit of a problem, but now that she was the Lady, no one complained. Sunfall was the place to be when it came to a party and up until now, it had worked out.

A chair was pulled back and Kalea raised her brows for a moment, nodding towards the girl, before sitting down and focussing her attention on Nasir again. He spoke of having selected their dishes tonight. The idea of exotic delicacies worried her a little. Whenever her father had come home with such a thing, she did not want to know what it was. Hopefully Nasir knew how to pick less nastyr ingredients for the dishes. “I’m looking forward to it,” she smiled. Please, Nasir, don’t bring something disgusting.

When Nasir said that he would like to get to know her, she leaned back in her seat, pulling her lips up in a perfect smile. “And I would like to find out more about you,” she answered. There was truth in these words, though Kalea had a habit of losing interest in people rather fast. She could only hope that Nasir would keep her intrigued for long enough to get through this dinner. As far as she heard, Nasir had a good name. Loyal to Zehirah as her Master of Laws. But those stories were boring. “So, what would you like to know?” she asked, her brows raised. She wondered what he was curious about. Would this be another dinner filled with the same questions, or would he manage to surprise her?

Ashaxian people were known for their carefree and festive spirits, and Lady Mahli seemed no exception to this rule. From the little bit of information he had managed to gather, she was a lively and vibrant young woman, not unlike his own sister Aliyah. A lady fitting for a place like Sunfall, yet he wondered how she dealt with her newfound responsibilities. It wasn’t every day that lordship was unexpectedly thrusted onto you, and the way she would adapt to it would tell him plenty of things about her.

Nasir took note when she nodded at the servant as a means of thanking her. It was a curious practice, or so he thought, since he himself never adhered to such unnecessary pleasantries. Why would he applaud a fish for swimming? If the mere mentioning of these exotic dishes frightened her, it did not show. She simply smiled and told him she was looking forward to it. He smiled. “Good,” he said, growing more curious about the way she would handle herself when push came to shove.

The feeling was mutual. She wanted to get to know him too. The young woman had only recently been appointed as the new Lady of Sunfall, yet she carried herself with admirable confidence. It was something he enjoyed seeing, but also something he distrusted. Where did it come from, and was it actually genuine, or had she been told to carry herself like this? Nasir sat up a little straighter in response to her question. One of the servants came to pour them their wine in the meantime. “I’m sure you didn’t anticipate becoming Lady of Sunfall,” he reasoned. After all, her brother should have been the next in line. “I’m curious to know how you’ve been faring thus far.” He hadn’t heard any concerning stories as of yet, and the girl had already pledged her loyalty to Lady Zehirah. Things were working out, it seemed. Perhaps a little too well.

The first question asked by Nasir was one she had heard over and over again. It caused her to fall into a pattern, smiling that same smile she showed people every day. She wondered what they would expect her to say. Wasn’t there only one correct answer to this? It was the same as asking her how she was doing now that both her father and her brother were dead. ‘It’s hard, but I still have my sister and my mother,’ she would say. Even though her mother locked herself up, drinking away her agony. She wasn’t of any use. The woman was pathetic, had lost her strength when she had lost her man.

I did not,” she admitted. No, she was never meant to take over. That much was clear to everyone. “I was supposed to be married off to some Lord to keep alliances strong,” she smiled. She had never liked the idea of being wed to someone she didn’t know, but now that this decision was up to her, she liked it even less. It was easier to have such a decision made by someone who knew what he was doing.

But my father was gone a lot, to keep our alliance with Qecera,” she explained. Qecera was a town in Yax’in, one who did not like strangers at all, but had been trading with Sunfall for generations. Because her father had married a Yax’in woman, this bond had only grown stronger. “So my council knows what to do in his absence. They have been helping me find my place,” she continued. They wanted her to find a husband who would be able to rule in her name, but that hadn’t happened so far.

A lot of people, both men and women, became lord or lady of their respective city a little prematurely. After all, no one expected their father or sibling to suddenly perish, but it was known to happen. Nasir could count himself among the few lucky people who still had all of his family left. His parents and his siblings were still very much alive, although he doubted his parents still had many years left ahead of them. Still, it wouldn’t be the untimely death that the Mahli’s had suffered.

Kalea herself said that she had been prepared to be married off, but that was largely the extent of her responsibilities towards Sunfall. Nasir briefly smiled. “And now you are free to do as you please,” he remarked, assuming that she would be happy with this newfound freedom. Most women were rather anxious when it came to being married off, which was something that he could understand. She had more freedom now, which could make it easier on her, or just that much harder.

She continued to explain that her father was gone a lot, so she had the fortune of having a well-informed council. “You rely a lot on other people then?” he paraphrased, lifting a curious eyebrow. He reached for his goblet of wine, taking a generous sip. It was good to know what kind of people she relied on, to know where their loyalties lied. Many people around Avalance had hidden intentions, although Nasir had found that Ashax was one of the places where people were generally less eager to backstab one another. For now.

Nasir noted that she was now free to do as she pleased, which caused Kalea to nod slowly. “A terrifying thing,” she admitted. She had never tried to hide her feelings about the future. The future was unknown and terrifying. Most young women in her place would probably feel the same. “The thought of leaving such a decision in my father’s hands was the easy way out. Now, I will have to do that myself.” Some would have loved to make that decision themselves, but not Kalea. Not in the current situation. Because now more than ever, it would not be about love. She had to pick someone who could rule the city with her and that terrified her.

When he asked if she relied on other people a lot, Kalea hummed softly. “I rely on their counsel and experience,” she answered. There was no use in denying that. “I am not going to assume that I am fit to rule a city just because my father did a good job,” she then further explained. No, she had never been told how to do it. Her father had never shared his wisdoms, never told her why and how he did what he did. She had visited Yax’in, but she had treated it more like a holiday, not to make political alliances.

Freedom apparently evoked fear in her. It was interesting to see how differently people looked at it. Nasir valued his freedom above everything else, in everything he did, and he was sure the same went for the servants he kept at home. To them, freedom was the absolute goal. He slowly nodded in response to her words, understanding where she was coming from. In a major way, his father still called the shots when it came to their house, and if he passed it would be Calian’s turn. He held a lot of power within the government of Ashax, but even there, Lady Illeon made the final call. “Power is a terrifying thing indeed,” he agreed, “but some would say it is better off in the hands of those who would prefer not to have it.” People who were greedy for power often lacked responsibility, and therefore tended to abuse it. Just like he did.

The woman confirmed that she relied on the experience of her council. A conscious choice, and probably a wise one for a young woman like her. He briefly smiled. “You already seem wise beyond your years,” he told her. Before he could assault her with yet another question, a servant came in with two bowls of an amber-colored soup with pieces of meat that were unidentifiable at first glance. Nasir happily looked at his, before he redirected his gaze over to her. “I hope you enjoy sea food. I’ve made it the main focus for our dinner,” he told her, already reaching for his cutlery. “Shark fin soup. It’s quite the delicacy in some regions in Lavarr, or so I’ve heard.” Back there, it was a luxury item that signified status, so of course, he had to have it.

Power was a terrifying thing, if Nasir was to be believed. He spoke of how, according to some, it was better off in the hands of those who would prefer not to have it. Those were words her father had spoken too, saying that those who were not blinded by the power were those who could truly rule. For power was not a gift; it was a burden. “Do you agree with those words?” she asked, wondering if he believed this to be true as well.

He told her that she was wise beyond her years, but Kalea doubted the truth in that. She was realistic, but that was hardly helping her out. Her attention was quickly drawn by the food. Sea food, apparently. Not exactly her favorite, but it was something she was used to at home. When he said it was shark fin soup, she furrowed her brow. She didn’t know much about Lavarr, instead being more interested in their southern neighbour. But, she was willing to try anything. It didn’t look like shark fins, though. It was a mushy brew that looked like it wouldn’t taste all that great, but surely he wouldn’t have brought her here for a mediocre dish, right? She pulled her lips up in a smile again.

Well, let’s give it a try,” she chuckled, before picking some meat and soup from the bowl with her spoon. After giving it a taste, she realized… there wasn’t all that much of a taste. Her brow furrowed yet again as she tried to find something to compare the odd texture of the dish to, before swallowing. Odd.

History books were often filled with quotes about power and its implications, but Nasir found that only one thing always held true: those who had power had it, and those who didn’t had not. It did not matter whether you were humble, cruel, kind, or wise. Power was handed down or thrust upon someone, and how that person fared with the consequences was just a matter of circumstance. The young woman’s question made him briefly smile. “No,” he confessed. “I believe power is better off in one’s own hands. After all, the only one that is always looking out for your best interest is you.” People who refused power were only fooling themselves; perhaps they might not want the responsibility, but deep down they always wanted the influence.

The woman had sparked his interest, clearly. She didn’t hold her opinions to herself, which was something very refreshing. He had taken women out to dinner before, but they had been timid and meek, just as his first wife had been. They believed that they were meant to be seen and not heard, and their answers were always predictable and socially convenient. The shark fin soup was served, and Nasir already felt his mouth water in anticipation. He allowed himself a spoonful, with the soup itself having far more flavour than the actual shark fin floating in the centre. It was more of a status symbol than a culinary delicacy, but well. “Tell me what you think,” he said, curiously looking up at her. She didn’t look like the type of person that would lie to him and say she enjoyed it, even though she didn’t. If she would, he would be thoroughly disappointed.

According to Nasir, the power was better off in one’s own hands. After all, only you were always looking out for yourself. Kalea hummed softly at his words. Power was not supposed to be in the hands who valued their own needs over another’s, but finding someone who would not do just that was a difficult task, if not impossible. “So, you wish to have power of your own?” she inquired, raising her brows. Was that what Nasir was after?

Nasir told her to tell him what she thought of the dish. While the stew itself seemed to have some taste, the shark fin was only added for decoration. It was not her kind of dish, that much was certain. The texture was disgusting, in all honesty. She had always preferred fruits and vegetables over meat to begin with and the way this sinewy dish felt in her mouth made her all sorts of uncomfortable. “I…” she started, still searching for the right words until she decided to give up and just voice her opinion. “The taste is fine,” she started, dragging the word to imply that it was nothing spectacular. “But the texture is… odd.” She had no idea what other word to use for it.

Nasir had rooted for Lady Illeon for years, nearly decades, because he knew she had the interest of all people from Ashax in mind at all times. She cared for her people, the people of the south, in a way that not many other noblemen did. He looked up to her in many ways, which was why he wanted to aid in elevating her to the throne of Avalance. In his eyes, there was no one better fit to rule than Zehirah was. Kalea inquired whether he wished to have power of his own. “I already have,” he told her. “But I do believe that Lady Illeon works in the collective interest of Ashax, which is why I’m willing to trust her.” Power was a dangerous tool, but he believed it to be safest with Zehirah.

He happily had another helping of soup, enjoying the salty taste of the broth but not yet touching the shark fin itself. He preferred keeping the best for last, as he quite liked the strange and peculiar texture of it. At that point, he desperately wanted to hear Kalea’s opinion, smirking as he listened to her. The taste was okay, but the texture left something to be desired. He chuckled a little. “I won’t be offended if you leave it,” he told her, “but I can’t speak for the chef.” He ate some more spoonfuls of the broth before touching the actual protein of the dish. The texture was odd indeed, but in his mind that was exactly what made it so good. Why waste your time on something mundane and predictable?

According to Nasir, he already had acquired power. In a way he had, though it was different. The true power was not in his hand, for he was merely a voice in Zehirah’s council. He explained how he believed that Zehirah worked in the collective interest of Ashax. Kalea nodded slowly. “My family has always been loyal to Illeon. I will just have to trust their judgement,” she hummed. She had met Lady Illeon only a handful of times, only once where it really mattered. She had vowed to help with the war to come. She wondered what that would mean for the future.

He would not be offended if she left it, though the cook might be. “It’s not that bad,” she argued, filling up her spoon and placing it in her mouth, furrowing her brow once again at the odd texture. Would she ever get used to it? Probably not. She carefully swallowed it after a short while, putting a smile on her lips again. “You have strange taste,” she noted, filling up another spoon and lifting it up, looking at the odd meat on it. “Is there any food you don’t like?” she wondered, before taking another bite.

Arguably, Nasir already held more power than anyone like him should. He owned two successful trading companies, both legitimate and illegitimate, and was the Master of Laws to House Illeon. His brother would soon become the High Lord to Ashax, and his cousin would assure House Inclàn an alliance with a prominent house in the Evergreen. His family was putting itself on the map at quite a rapid pace, and he couldn’t be prouder. Kalea told him that her family had always been loyal to the Illeon family, and thus she would continue to do so. “It’s important to follow in the footsteps of our ancestors,” he agreed. “Yours single-handedly established a relationship between Avalance and Yax’in. Clearly, they were wise men.” Sunfall was an important place for international trade, and thus, irreplaceable for Ashax.

Nasir couldn’t help but chuckle at her words. He liked her brutal honesty. He helped himself to a piece of the actual shark fin as well, enjoying it a lot more than she seemed to do. A smirk appeared on his face when she called his taste ‘strange’, which he decided to take as a compliment. “Why thank you,” he said. “I just find myself getting bored easily with having the same things over and over again.” He didn’t care for having the same standard Ashaxian meal each and every time. He wanted to be excited by exotic tastes and textures. He hummed in response to her question. “Can’t stand kiwis,” he said, shaking his head.

It was important to walk into the footsteps of our ancestors. Nasir spoke of hers, who had accomplished things no one else in Avalance had. Kalea nodded slowly. Yax’in. It was strange to think that there was a time where it hadn’t been close to their heart. If anything, Yax’in felt more like home to her than Ashax ever had. She furrowed her brow, before raising them curiously. “Have you ever visited?” she wondered, realizing her question wasn’t too clear. “Yax’in, I mean.” Not many people had.

Nasir said he would get bored if he’d have the same thing over and over again. “Really?” she asked. In a way she could understand. She had the same with people. She liked different souls around her. Food, however? Not really. She enjoyed sweet foods. The sweeter the better. His distaste for kiwi’s was a bit of a surprise. “They’re… okay,” she noted. “Not as good as red grapes. Or figs. Or dates!” she exclaimed, before stuffing another bite into her mouth. The thought alone of those sweet things made her mouth water, which caused her to be a little disappointed with her bite of shark.
