The Dragon Dance

As dusk fell over the Golden Hills, a loud screech could be heard in the distance. A challenge that was answered by another. The serene silence that was falling across the region together with the darkness of night was instantly broken. The beastly cries were accompanied by the dull sound of wings moving the air. While the light was growing dim, the shadows that were cast on the ground below were getting darker.

Stormbringer had been flying over these hills for some time now, turning them white with snow instead of their usual lush colouring. It had been looking for a place to settle, but it had sensed the other dragon, like only a creature of its kind, could. Another which could be willing to fight for its spot on this landmass, and so Stormbringer had waited. Waited to see if this other dragon would indeed come to claim this territory.

Sunchaser had only just awoken from its slumber, sensing the danger beyond his state of eternal sleep. The process had been slow at first, but not even time could contain it for much longer than necessary. The familiar feeling of a bonded dragonrider was gone, no one was pulling the strings but instincts. There was another dragon in Avalance and being as big as Sunchaser was, Avalance was too little a place to house two dragons.

Their roars grew louder as the two dragons flew closer to one another, each warning the other to back off without a fight. While they were both confident in their strength, they knew the risk. There was always a chance the both of them would perish when they were so equally matched. Neither of them seemed to back down, however, as they eventually flew straight at one another. The dance would now finally begin. Sunchaser's dark scales almost disappeared against the appearing night sky, while Stormbringer was a flash of white that, when illuminated, almost rivalled the moon and the stars.

The falling darkness was abruptly broken by a flash of orange and white blue, as both dragons warned a last time, showing their powerful breath, fire and frost. Part of the hills froze over instantly, while the other caught fire, melting away the layer of snow. The heavy sound of wingbeats intensified, followed by more roars and then a collision in the sky.

Sunchaser and Stormbringer tore at each other with claws, trying to bite down on the other's wings, pushing them off balance. Nothing could break through their scales like the claw and teeth of another dragon. Blood began to well from their wounds, as they both took turns to let out screeches of anger and pain. They broke free of one another, only to try and bathe the other in flames or ice. A few times they got tangled up so badly they both crashed into the ground below.

The sky was ignited with flashes of orange and blue as the fight dragged on. The roars only got louder as neither of them seemed to gain the upper hand. Battles like this were not unheard of, although most ended before one or both dragons would die. However, neither Sunchaser nor Stormbringer were ready to admit defeat. Ignoring the gashes between their scales, the rips in their wings and the burn in their eyes.

And then, Sunchaser lost balance while trying to avoid another blast of frostbreath. The dragon screamed as it was hit and before it could do anything, Stormbringer smashed into it with such force, Sunchaser crashed into the ground below with a bang as loud as a clap of thunder. There was no sound after, aside from the beat of Stormbinger's wings. The beast lingered for a moment, before it set off towards the Iron Ridge, wounds still dripping with blue ice dragon blood.
