The days had gone by in a blur. He had his hands -or well, hand- full with all kinds of matters. Being in a more coordinating position he had to keep an overview while sending out people to carry out tasks that all fit into the bigger picture he was trying to puzzle together. At the same time he was not the type of person to simply shove all the hard work on the back of someone else. So instead of taking a much-needed break he found himself cleaning armour and weapons along with the soldiers stationed in the barracks of the stronghold.

It was only when one of the men casually mentioned the fact that it was getting late he realised it was indeed almost nightfall. And that meant he quickly excused himself to retreat to the walls. He knew Alison was coming. Any time now she could arrive. So he had made it a habit of climbing the Northern tower which gave him a perfect view of the road leading up towards the castle. Hopefully he would catch a glimpse of her travelling party soon.

she's like the winter sun
her ruddy edges slightly blurred
The last few months had gone by quite differently than she’d expected. They were supposed to get married quickly after her arrival at Goldenleaf, but Fred’s undivided attention had gone to the mysterious illness that The Glade was suffering from. She understood, of course, supported him even, as she knew that those in power always had to put their people above their personal needs. But then she was needed at home and it was her turn to excuse herself in service of the greater good. So she had re-packed her bags and headed up north, all the while thinking that she would be back soon and everything would be fine.

Well, that was then, but things had changed. In the end, she had to stay home for months instead of weeks and a lot had happened in the meantime. They had kept each other updated through letters, so she knew what had happened to her fiancé, but the mere thought of it made her stomach turn. She still wishes that he hadn’t gone to the tournament at all, that he had to come with her or stay with his father or something. Or, if not that, at least that she could’ve been there for him. It probably would have been a traumatising experience for her, but then he wouldn’t have been alone.

Alas, the past can’t be changed, and she didn’t have anymore time to think about it anyway as her carriage was just arriving at the palace where Frederick was staying temporarily. It was a big, sturdy castle, pretty in its robustness and elegant in its pride. The door to her carriage was opened and she got out. She was still wearing her Highland furs, which was a good thing as apparently the storm had reached the border already. She looked around, checking for either her fiancé or someone else to welcome her. It was almost dark out, but if her raven had arrived on time they should be aware that she was coming later in the day.

At the time neither of them had thought they’d be separated for longer than a couple of weeks. Back then they both had assumed she would join him at the tournament in Sapphire Keep. He quite vividly remembered his disappointment when she had announced she would not be able to attend. There was business in Caer Scion that demanded her attention. His goal had been to win the tournament, so he could crown her the Queen of Love and Beauty. It would have been a dream come true. He had trained, worked hard, for years to get to that point. And then it all had come crashing down.

In hindsight he was glad she hadn’t been there to watch him fall. He had heard bits and pieces about the accident. No one had ever told him the full story, but he could vaguely picture it. He was glad she had been spared to witness such horrors. He was somewhat glad the cold weather allowed him to cover himself in thick furs and a warm cape. It hid the lack of his arm well. So when he saw the carriage in the distance, he rushed downstairs, to wait for her in the courtyard.

The castle blocked most of the icy wind coming from the North. It didn’t stop the snowflakes from falling down, covering his hair and clothes with a thin white layer. Despite all that, he felt a rush of warmth go through him as her familiar figure emerged from the vehicle. A smile appeared around his lips. He stepped forward, eager to embrace her. It felt different now he only had one arm to do so, but he did not mind. Not as much anymore. ”Alison”, He sighed in some weird form of relief. He had barely had the time to think about his personal life. Not in this time of crisis. But damn, had he missed her.

It was less cold in the courtyard than outside of it and certainly less cold than in Caer Scion. Alison was glad, not for herself but for the people from Goldenleaf who all of a sudden had to get used to the colder climate of the north. The storm so far hadn't been easy on anyone, so she was relieved to finally be reunited with her fiancé so she could keep an eye on him. They had known each other since they were very little and in her mind their childhood had lasted forever, but now all of a sudden they were growing up fast.

She didn't really have time to look around, as Frederick had apparently been waiting for her. She noticed his familiar smile as soon as he stepped from the shadows, and her eyes lit up at the sight of him. "Fred!" she said excitedly, while running towards him. Almost immediately she found herself embraced in one of his big bear hugs, though it was a little less big and a little less bear-y as she only felt the weight of one of his arms on her. Her excitement lessened slightly at that observation, but it still felt good to finally hold him again. She tilted her head back, placed both of her - cold, oops - hands on his cheeks and kissed him. God, had she missed him. The kiss was, of course, all part of their little play, so no one would question the integrity of their love. At the same time, it still held its own magic and love. The love she felt for him was real, it was just a different kind of love. That didn't mean that she didn't want to kiss him, and hug him, and squeeze him, and never let him go again. He was her best friend and her other half. She broke off the kiss and looked him in the eyes. "Oh, Fred, I've missed you so much." she sighed.

His time as squire with the Lord Commander of the Highlands had somewhat prepared him for the cold they were dealing with now. He just didn’t particularly like it. Snow could be beautiful. He loved to watch a landscape covered in absolute white. It was peaceful. The layer of fresh snow also absorbed sound for some reason. It got way more quiet. When walking around the only thing you could hear were your own footsteps and breath. This type of snow was different though. It had a certain eerie vibe to it. The cause for this bad weather was most likely the same reason the Undying were fleeing the Cursed Reach. It could only mean trouble.

In this instant all his trouble was forgotten though. Her cold hands touched his cheeks as she pulled him in for a kiss. He hummed in surprise but was quick to kiss her back nonetheless. It was how everyone around them would expect an engaged couple to greet each other after being separate for so long. Aside from that it was his way of showing her how much he cared for her, despite them not having romantic feelings for each other. She was his best friend and he was so glad to be reunited with her.

”I’ve missed you too”, He replied to her soft sigh. He let go of her, but offered her the crook of his elbow so he could lead her inside. That way he could maintain some physical contact. Plus, she’d be on his good side, away from where his arm was missing, which would hopefully help distract her attention from it. ”Let us go inside, yes? I arranged to have the night off unless something urgent happens”, He let her know, after which he started walking towards the entrance of the castle. A room was waiting for them, in which a fire was burning and the servants would serve a hot meal. It was the welcome she deserved, especially after such a long travel.

Truth be told, the past few months hadn't gone the way she'd expected. When she left Caer Scion to live with the Carthas family, she thought it would be years before she'd return. And she'd hoped she would return for happy reasons, but that had turned out to be far from the truth. Instead, she'd lived through the harshest winter she'd encountered in her 24 years on this earth, with an uneasy feeling constantly breathing in her neck. They were living through weird times, that was for sure.

It had forced them to put their marriage on hold, which meant that they were kind of in-between the old and the new for now. It was fine though, neither of them probably were in the right headspace for those kind of festivities right now. Plus, it would have to take place in Goldenleaf, and for now it was still a big question when they'd return. One thing she knew for sure was that as long as Fred would have to stay at the border, she would too. She was done with being separated. They'd be in this together from now on.

She took his elbow when he offered it to her, revelling in its warmth and strength. She clung to it slightly. The underlying feeling of guilt that she should have been there made the impact of this moment that much greater. She let out a low hum. "That sounds good." she said with a smile. A night to catch up with just the two of them was exactly what she needed. "I do hope you get enough rest when I'm not here, too." she said, looking at him pointedly. She knew how eager and hardworking he was, which was both his biggest strength and his biggest weakness. Alison prayed nothing unusual would happen tonight, so that he could just get a good night's rest.

The past few weeks he had been worried about her. With her being in Caer Scion, so close to the threat coming from the Cursed Reach, he had feared she would never return to his side. He had wanted to jump on his horse and guide her back himself. There had been a few factors preventing him from acting upon that impulse though. First and foremost his father, who did not agree with him travelling that far during these difficult times. Then there was the fact that he had a duty to fulfil. At least now he knew for sure she was safe. The stronghold was not in an immediate danger zone. She could stay here with him for as long as the threat did not close in on them.

For tonight he had tried to clear his schedule. They hadn’t seen each other in so long. He had a lot to share with her. He guided her inside with the promise of warmth and some alone time for the both of them. The meaningful look coming with her words made him smile like a young boy who just got caught doing something naughty. ”I try to?” He sheepishly grinned. Once inside he brought her to his private quarters. As the highest ranking Knight, in charge of the whole organisation, he had a bit more luxury than the soldiers staying in the barracks.

The fire was crackling. The room had a comfortably warm temperature. One which required him to take off his heavy cape and coat. For a second he hesitated. He looked her over as she moved around the room, making herself comfortable. Then he decided it did not matter. She would not judge him. So he unbuckled the clasp holding his cape together, after which he also removed the coat. He put the pieces of clothing over the back of a chair standing nearby. ”I hope you’re hungry, I had the cook prepare a meal for us”, He told her, gesturing at the table that was set for two people. It wouldn’t be anything fancy, as he would not like the thought of indulging in expensive food while some people were struggling to even put a piece of bread on the table.

Alison shook her head, a smile on her face. Him 'trying to' probably meant 'no' in this case. It came as no surprise to her, as Frederick had always had his ways in putting other people first. It made her that much more grateful for the night they had together. She was exhausted from the long trip, but it also meant that he would have some time to relax, which was incredibly valuable in times like this.

As they reached what she assumed were his quarters, she took a moment to take in the atmosphere. It was warm and cozy and very much 'Fred'. He always had his way of leaving his personal touch wherever he went, like there was something in the air that immediately made everything feel familiar and homey. The crackling fire definitely added to this feeling. Alison took off her heavy fur coat, dusting off the tiny snowflakes that had gotten stuck on it in the little period between stepping out of the carriage and getting inside before gently putting it down on the back of the sofa. It was usually too warm for the climate of The Glade, but she had a feeling she would be needing it again soon.

"Oh, I'm starving!" she laughed. It wasn't a very lady-like thing to say, but she knew she didn't have to hold back when it came to Fred. She looked up at him and her heart dropped. He had taken off both his cape and his coat and therefore revealed the lack of arm. She already knew, of course, but seeing it made it that more real. She forced herself to look him in the eyes, only having been distracted for a split second. She prayed he didn't notice. He was probably stared at enough already and she didn't want him to feel uncomfortable with her at all. Plus, she was fairly sure that if she would look at it for more than a second she would cry.

"You should probably get rid of all that snow in your hair before we eat, though." she said with a smile. She walked towards him, reaching up to teasingly ruffle through his hair, making it all messy. She knew how much he hated that, so she was probably lucky hers was tightly braided together as he'd probably want his revenge. Hopefully it was enough to distract him from the stunned look she had in her eyes for that one little moment. She already felt guilty about it.

There was that slight moment of hesitation again. He had spent the first weeks of returning home hiding in his room. He had picked up the bad habit of only leaving during the darker hours of the evening. Visiting the stables at night so he would not run into the stableboys or other people tending to their horses. To avoid having to meet people on the streets of Goldenleaf. His absence had been noticed by many, which caused them to stare even more during the few times he had to leave the Carthas castle in full sight of everyone. The accident had been the talk in many bars and taverns alike. It had overshadowed the wedding of Lady Sylversword in some social circles. He knew that he wouldn’t be able to show his face at any tournament anymore without getting asked if he was the one who had been knocked off during the final round at the tournament in Sapphire Keep.

In all honesty he would have stayed inside for much longer. But then the threat had come from the Cursed Reach, and the call of duty had summoned him to the Keep once more. And now he was here, as commander in chief over a rather important key position in defending the borders from whatever might try to cross them and do harm to the people of the Glade. He was done being ashamed. And he knew Alison would never judge him by his appearance anyway.

Though he should have perhaps warned her. He didn’t know how she would take it when he so casually showed her without even asking her if she was okay with it. Though she seemed to not mind at all, as he had expected. She walked up to him and wiped the snow out of his hair. He squirmed when some ice dripped down his neck. ”Stop it aah”, He half-giggled, trying to get a hold of her arm to push it aside. He then tried to fix the mess she had made. ”Just you wait, I will get my revenge when you don’t expect it”, He chuckled. He then walked over to a chair, pulling it back for her so she could sit down. After that he walked around and sat down himself. ”Some wine to get you started?” He proposed, gesturing at the bottle standing in the middle of the table. To his surprise the wine cellar of this usually calm stronghold held some good bottles of wine.

It was weird that this was the situation they found themselves in. When he came to live with her family in Caer Scion, he was fourteen and she fifteen years old. They’d hit it off immediately, but to think they would end up where they were now? They were about to get married, and with any luck there would be a little one running around in a year or two. On the surface it seemed too perfect, so of course it wasn’t. First and foremost because her heart belonged to another, which meant their marriage would never be ‘real’. Not entirely.

She also never could have imagined that they would find themselves on the frontline in a fight against the undying, nor that Fred would have gone through such horrors before he was even a quarter century of age. Luckily he hadn’t seemed to notice that her eyes had lingered for a second, but she wouldn’t be able to pretend to not see it forever. They would have to talk about it sometime, even though she wasn’t sure she could hold a conversation that painful.

She laughed when he got some ice in his neck and pushed her away. One would think by now he would know this would happen after spending so much time with her in the north. It had been a while since they’d lived there together though, so she couldn’t really blame him. ”Oh, I’m counting on it.” she grinned. Seemed like she had accidentally started one of their little games of cat and mouse.

She followed him to the table and sat down in the chair he had pulled out for her. “Why, thank you kind sir.” she giggled. She was getting spoiled, she knew. “How have you been holding up here? Not too lonely, I hope?” There were other people in the stronghold, of course, but she could imagine being separated from his family would be hard in times like these.

Even though he had known her for so long he still fell for her sneaky moves. Those little games had lasted their entire relationship and he had learned absolutely no lessons. Now he paid for it with some ice running down his spine which was sending a shiver through his whole body as it did. However they both knew he would not simply let this pass. For now she was safe, but later.. He would get his revenge. And then she would pay him back in return. Basically they had been doing this for their entire time together. It was fun though. He did not plan on stopping anytime soon. For he hoped to be around her for so much longer. And above all he hoped they would never lose that playful side.

Not even now so much had changed. Because there was no denying it. They were both adults now. One day they would rule Goldenleaf together. First they had to get through whatever this crisis was. And he was so glad to have her by his side again. Because for a while his spirit had been broken. He was finally recovering, and with her support, it would all be easier. ”I am too busy to feel lonely”, He chuckled after he had sat down himself. He opened the bottle, struggling for a second with how hard the cork had been pushed down into the neck, but eventually he managed to pour them both a glass. ”Though I am glad you are here now. These people, they respect me, which is nice”, He said before pausing. ”But the situation has everyone on edge and you know me, I start joking around, and then they look at me like I’m crazy”, He shrugged. Now he had someone to banter with when times got really rough. It was better for his mind that way. ”How were things up North then?” He asked next. He got updated regularly by the knights that had travelled to reinforce Caer Scion, but she might be able to give him different perspectives.

Alison watched him fill two glasses about halfway with wine, the red liquid comfortably swaying around. To be honest, she was quite impressed with the way he managed to do it, it almost looked like it didn’t cause him any trouble at all. Almost. He had always been quite handy. It was visible in the way he carried things, how he saddles his horses, the way he had always been at the top of the jousting tournaments. She was positive that in a couple of months, he would be able to do everything he used to need two arms for with only one. In the meantime, she would be there to help him if he ever needed it, though she doubted he would ever ask.

”I’m glad I’m here, too. she said softly. It had taken quite a bit of persuasion to convince her parents it would be safe enough at the border, that she didn’t have to flee further south. She took a sip of her wine. It… wasn’t great, but that was fine. It warmed her up a little either way. ”Well, I promise I won’t look at you funny. I already know how crazy you are, anyway.” she said with a cheeky look on her face. She quite respected the way he always managed to lift everyone’s spirits up. Yes, the situation was serious, but moping around hadn’t made anyone better before.

She thought about his question for a bit. The city they’d grown up in had changed quite a bit over the past few months. ”When I first got there, it was mostly fine. I mean, there were some rumours going around, but the news hadn’t quite reached the public yet.” She paused. She’d often wondered if they could’ve acted sooner or more adequately, but they really didn’t have any idea of the size of the threat in the beginning and so they didn’t want the people to panic. Or at least, that’s what she thought was the reason. She couldn’t take a look in the Freyrs’, minds, of course. ”But the atmosphere got quite grim pretty fast. Just… Tense. I imagine the streets are completely empty by now.” She started absentmindedly turning her engagement ring. Leaving had hurt a bit, even though she’d done it before. The reason why was just quite awful this time around and she didn’t know in what state it would be when she returned, if she ever would.
