t felt like winter was going on forever. Though Rhysand was used to being surrounded by snow all year long, this felt like something completely different. For once, the snowstorms they were experiencing were worse than ever and aside from that, the letter from Apollo warning them for an Undying threat possibly coming their way, made it feel like they had angered the Gods. Rhysand understood all reason for the Gods to be angry with him, and his sister, but he didn't understand why the whole of the Highlands had to suffer. Not only that, but word was that the whole mainland of Avalance was experiencing an unlikely harsh winter. Something was off.

His whole day had been filled with speaking to guards, commanders and the people themselves. The inns were overcrowded and as it was a time of need, Rhysand had opened the castle for refugees to have a warm place to stay. The usually silent halls were now filled with soft whispers and hushed voices. All afraid of what was to come. He passed a few people huddled together around a small fire pit in the hallway near the entrance, giving them a nod and a careful smile. He soon found himself back in his own living quarters. He released a sigh, glad to finally get himself some rest. Tomorrow it would start all over again.

The unimaginable rough winter and the coming plague of undying was a curse with a small slight silver lining. The cold and the snow were unmeasurable. It was like something Carmilla had never experienced before. She didn’t mind the cold that much, but it did become a problem. Inns were overflowing, they were short of shelter and so forced to open their doors for refugees. Carmilla didn’t particularly enjoy having to share space with strangers, but she had soon found a positive aspect of sharing space with the commoners. The best way to align the people with you, to make them trust you and to make them rely on you – was to find a common enemy. A common enemy forced everyone to stand in a straight line. There was no room to doubt their leaders, to think about the rumors and whispers that had been going around. And with a friendly smile and a helping hand Carmilla could easily earn the trust of the people. She portrayed herself as the friendly lady, al though she was pretty annoyed by the many people and with the whole situation. She was also worried of course. Who knows how this would end?

She looked around. Everyone seemed to be provided with some blankets and a bit of food. For now, they’d be alright. Time to find her brother. She still wanted to talk with him about the whole situation. Till now they hadn’t had a time yet to discuss things. As soon as the news had arrived, they immediately had to take action. Things had settled down a bit, but she assumed Rhys was still busy. Still, she decided to go to his quarters just in case he had finished talking with the guards. With a bit of luck, they had just enough time to simply talk things over. The two knew each other like the back of their hand, but she still wanted to make sure that their thoughts aligned. She halted in front of the door. She knocked twice. It was more to let him know she was there instead of asking for permission; she’d enter either way. She opened the door and peaked around the corner.

ontinueing on like this would only exhaust his body even more, but he knew that if he abandoned his people at the peak of a crisis, or maybe they hadn't even reached that peak yet, the last thing he was going to worry about would be exhaustion. So, he pushed himself over the edge, just a little. He hadn't done everything to get here just to lose it all in a matter of months.

The silence around him was deafening. Meaning that the two knocks on the door immediately grabbed his attention. The first feeling that arose was annoyance. He'd worked all day and somehow people still managed to find him and, probably, bother him. But as soon as he saw the familiar face of his sister, did that feeling wane. ''Carmilla. Bless the Gods it's you.'' He sighed, relieved. He gestured for her to enter, dropping in a chair near the fire and stretching his legs. His sister could never bother him, if any, she was probably one the few that could cheer him up. Besides Cirina probably, but she had suddenly vanished, which just added more to his pile of worries. Nothing seemed to go right as of late.

She was glad to finally catch a break from pretending to be the lovely, caring lady. Of course, she could be caring and loving, but only Rhysand would be able to bring that side out in her. She halted in front of his door. She could imagine he needed some rest from everything. It had been incredible hectic, and they barely had a chance to catch their breath. It still felt like she was doing wrong by just standing still, as if she had to be moving 24/7. She knew taking a break couldn’t, not if it were to be only for a few minutes. And besides, she’d have a talk with her brother; it would be for business, not for a break. After knocking on the door, a short silence fell. She assumed that her brother didn’t want any company from anyone else as he deliberately had left the crowd to sit in his own chamber to be alone. But she also knew that she could help him. So, she peaked her head around the corner to see how Rhysand was doing. Perhaps he had fallen asleep in a chair from exhaustion, but once she looked around the corner, she noticed him looking at her.

''Carmilla. Bless the Gods it's you,'' Rhysand sighed relieved. Carmilla smiled and stepped into the room. She closed the door softly behind her before stepping toward Rhysand. The man dropped himself in a chair near the fire. Carmilla glanced at his face, noticing the exhaustion in his face. He seemed to get worse. She knew that frantically worrying about it wouldn’t help, but she would of course still worry. She eventually took place in a chair next to him, her eyes still lingered on him. ”How are you holding up?” she carefully asked. She knew a lot had happened and it must be taking its toll on Rhy. She also knew that there was almost no time to take it easy or to rest, but she’d still highly suggest it for him. ”You should take some rest,” she therefore softly added, knowing that it might not be what he wanted to hear.

armilla was never someone that could bore him. Annoy him, sure, after all they were siblings. But he loved her with whole his heart, and it would be a very hard task to stop him from doing so. He couldn't stay angry with her for long, knowing that he could not go without her, just like she couldn't with him.

Rhysand shrugged at her question, not sure if there was a right answer. ''I'm okay. Just tired.'' There was a whole lot more to it, but the man didn't want her to worry. Even though it was just by a couple of minutes, he was still the older one and he didn't want to worry his 'little' sister. ''You know I can't. Not with this crisis knocking at your city gates.'' He looked at her, wondering why she was here. Ever since the death of their father, they started looking out for each other more, self-preseverance perhaps. But Rhysand did it out of love. ''How is everything with you?'' He could probably guess that Carmilla wasn't happy with the state of things, just like him, but letting people starve or freeze outside in the cold, wouldn't do their image any good. He just hoped that she had come up with a better solution.

Hunter of Stars

For a second she had hesitated to enter the room or not. She knew that Rhysand wouldn’t mind her presence, but maybe if she didn’t bother him, he’d be getting some rest. He probably had been busy with talking to guards, helping people and planning things. And as he now had retrieved into his chambers there was a high risk, he had finally found some time for himself. To relax, to come back to his senses. So, on one hand she didn’t want to bother him and grant him the rest he needed, but on the other hand she knew that there wasn’t time to waste. She had to talk to him, they had to discuss their approach and next move. So, despite her doubts she entered the room. Upon entering the room Rhy had lifted himself from his chair but let himself back in the chair as he noticed that it was his twin sister. She was happy to see that he indeed didn’t seem to mind her company but was worried with the exhaustion she saw painted all over his face. She asked him how it was going, although she could guess the answer on it – still, she just wanted to know, hoping he would tell her if it got worse or not.

Her brother shrugged at her question. ''I'm okay. Just tired,'' Rhysand answered. Carmilla knew he probably didn’t like to worry her and was therefore most likely acting tougher than he actually was. Knowing this she suggested that he might need to get some rest. She knew it was nearly impossible because of the many problems they had, but still, she didn’t want him to suffer from it. ''You know I can't. Not with this crisis knocking at your city gates,'' he responded, an answer she had anticipated, still she sighed softly. She nodded and took place next to him in a chair. ''How is everything with you?'' he then asked her. Carmilla faintly smiled. He’d probably know how she felt with all these strangers in their home. But just like him, she didn’t want him to worry about her either, so she shrugged as well. ”I’m alright. I do my best to help as many people as I can,” she answered with a slight smile. She then turned a bit more to Rhysand. The talk shouldn’t and couldn’t be all small chit chat. They had matters to attend and no time to waste. ”How long do you think we can keep it together like this?” she then asked, a slight worry laid in her voice. ”I mean, we’re going to run out of supplies eventually and all the roads are impassable,” she added. She didn’t want to lay any more pressure on her brother than what was necessary, but she expected him to have thought of this eventual ending.
