Grumbling he walked through the crowd toward the bar. Today had been his first workday. Ever since he had left his father’s home, he had told himself to never obey to someone else’s rule ever again. He had left his home for freedom, to do whatever he wanted to do. That promise had already been damaged a bit when he had decided to join the Division. Stubbornly he told himself that he was still free, that he still could do whatever he wanted to do, the consequences were simply a bit different. But now, today, there were no excuses that would make it right. The facts were, that he had a job. He didn’t have it because he was short on cash or because he wanted to work. Hell no. He’d rather sleep on the streets and pickpocket some money off strangers for food. This decision wasn’t his to take. It was Thomas’s. After the two had successfully escaped from the Damnation, they had returned to Thomas’s home to discover the ravage the men had made of the living room. It was clear that they had been searching for something but hadn’t found it. Chairs had been broken, shelfs had been thrown over and the content of every drawer had been spilled over the floor. The damage was as high as almost irreplaceable. And the only one to blame was Kaleb. The boy had made a mistake earlier that day to rob from the gang. They had recognized his face and without thinking Kaleb had ran to Thomas, dragging him down in his misery. Kaleb wasn’t the brightest and most of the time he didn’t think of the consequences. Tommy had already threatened to kill him once and Kaleb wouldn’t doubt it if the man would punch him in the face the next time they saw each other. It was clear he was still mad at him. He didn’t blame him. However, Thomas had made him a deal on how to pay for the damage the gang members had caused him. He had to work for him at the racetracks. At first, Kaleb tried everything to avoid working for him. He didn’t mind Thomas as a boss, but he’d still rather live on the streets than work for someone. He offered to repay Thomas in another way, with stolen goods, but the man wouldn’t even wither. It became clear that Kaleb didn’t have a choice. So, here he was, almost at the end of the day with a full day of working behind him. And he didn’t enjoy it one bit.

Now it seemed like he found a silver lining. There was a bar at the racetrack as well. Kaleb had kept his distant from it as he knew he would get drunk the moment he got his hands on some alcohol, but now he had found the perfect excuse to go to the bar. His job was to take care of the money after all. So he had to collect the money at the end of the day from the bar. He’d simply go a bit sooner, right before closing time, so he was assured of a few drinks as well. He didn’t think that the bartender would make a problem out of it. Some bartenders in pubs or inns refused to give him a drink because of his young age, but he assumed that this bartender wouldn’t make a big deal out of it as Kaleb worked here as well. He wasn’t a familiar face yet, but that would change. Once at the bar he laid eyes on the bartender. ”A glass of rum please,” he asked with a slight grins.

The bar looked so much nicer now the interior was entirely finished. Thomas had made sure the workers had focused on finishing the buildings surrounding the track first. While they were now working on preparing the track for the grand opening and the first race that would follow, the tavern and inn were operative already. He had volunteered to help out behind the bar. Considering his experience with bartending it was a great opportunity to teach the employees a trick or two. Not that they all needed it. It was going quite fine actually.

There had been a crowd every evening since he had arrived, some days busier than others. Tonight was slow but he had managed to fill his time nonetheless. Talking to the patrons and entertaining them, subtly hyping them up for the opening of the course later. Word of mouth advertisement still worked best. It was getting rather late already though, so he had sent the two other barmaids to bed. He would close off soon too.

His attention was drawn by a boy walking inside near closing time. He excused himself to the man he had been talking to and moved behind the bar to see what the other was up to. He vaguely recognised him as he had seen him walk around the property before. He figured he must be one of Tommy’s employees. ”A glass of rum aye? A wise choice”, He returned the grin. He grabbed a clean glass and filled it one third up. ”You arrived not too long ago, didn’t you?” He then asked to confirm his earlier suspicions. ”You look even better from up close”, He winked. Even if he had been mistaken and this was just a regular customer then at least the compliment would distract him from his fail.

A sigh of relief left his lips once he finally reached the bar. Finally, he could just take a moment for himself and relax. He hoped he could get a few drinks for free. Maybe it would be if the bartender knew he worked here as well? Kaleb glanced at the young man behind the bar that laid eyes on him. ”A glass of rum aye? A wise choice”, the bartender said before grabbing a glass and filling it. A small grin appeared around Kaleb’s lips. Luckily, he didn’t seem to have a problem with serving him alcohol. Would he feel the same way once Kaleb had one too many? ”Thank you,” Kaleb muttered, lifting the glass a bit, before taking a sip. He closed his eyes, enjoying the familiar burning sensation in his throat. He wasn’t planning on having a conversation with the bartender. He usually didn’t mind a bit of socializing, but after today he could use some time for himself. The young man seemed to have different plans.

”You arrived not too long ago, didn’t you?” he asked. Kaleb looked back at him. Only a second later he realized what the man meant. It seemed he already got recognized. ”You look even better from up close”, the bartender then added with a wink. For a few seconds Kaleb stared at him with a slight look of shock on his face. He didn’t understand why anyone would say such a thing to him. He was used to the opposite, to be called street rat or worse. Was this some new way of insulting him? Subconsciously he pulled the strains of hair a bit more over the left side of his face. His left eye was missing. Only the stitched eyelids indicated that it was missing. It had barely been a month since he had lost his eye and still felt very self-conscious about it. Meanwhile he had averted his gaze and decided to simply ignore the comment. ”Yeah, I’m new here,” he instead answered, deciding to keep it at that subject. ”Basically forced to work here,” he added with a small grin, before looking back at the young man. ”How long have you been working here? Can’t be that long,” he asked, knowing that the racetrack wasn’t finished yet. The boy could’ve started yesterday for all Kaleb knew.

The fact that the newcomer went straight to the bar could mean a couple of things. He had enough experience to have seen it all happen a hundred times before. Depending on the establishment it could either mean the patron was too shy to have a seat with other customers or he wanted to be left alone. Considering the fact that the bar was almost empty he guessed it would be the latter. Not that it would stop him from striking up a conversation. He was a social expert, or disaster, depending on who you’d ask. The shock clearly visible on his face told him he had not at all expected to have ended up in a conversation.

Too bad. He had walked into his territory now, and he always made it his personal quest to make sure everyone could walk out with at least one good new memory. The boy ignored his compliment. He then did the effort to cover the left side of his face. Peculiar. He then vaguely saw why. Before he hadn’t even noticed yet, it was the movement and the self-conscious expression that had drawn attention to it. He did not flinch, however. He also didn’t stare at it, which was a bit difficult but he just kept his focus on his other eye.

Eventually the other answered his question. He confirmed his suspicions. ”Basically since it opened”, He said, vaguely gesturing around the place. He then took another glass and filled it with a third of rum too. He took a sip before putting it down on the wooden tablet. ”Forced to work here eh? There’s a story there I’d like to hear”, He said with a grin. It was obvious that Tommy had to do something with it. He wondered what had went down he didn’t know about yet.

While covering up his empty eye socket he quickly realized that it would also be a way to attract attention to it. He just hoped that the bartender would catch the hint and not talk or ask about it. He didn’t want to repeat dumb story where he had made yet another mistake that could’ve been avoided if he had just been a bit more careful. He had been lucky that Kaz had been there to attend his wound or else he might’ve been dead. Al though it was Aveline who had taken care of his wound. It didn’t matter. He’d probably wouldn’t see either of them anymore. He ignored the compliment of the man, didn’t know how to respond on it. He was too sceptic to even think it was genuine. Instead he focused back on the rum. He took another sip from it, before answering the earlier asked question.

He tried to make it a bit comfortable and added a small grin to his words. He then returned the question to the bartender. ”Basically since it opened”, the man answered. Kaleb nodded. He concluded that he probably was a friend of Thomas as well. At least, if he really worked here since the beginning, he should be someone Thomas had approached fairly early. Kaleb looked up when another glass was put down next to his. He glanced at the boy who filled the glass with a bit of rum. Apparently, he wanted to join him in drinking. Kaleb still felt like relaxing by himself, but it didn’t seem like the man would leave him alone any second. ”Forced to work here eh? There’s a story there I’d like to hear”, he said with a grin, proving that he’d rather have a conversation with Kaleb then let him be by himself. Fine. Kaleb let out a soft sigh before straightening his back. ”Well..,” he started. He placed a hand in his neck and rubbed it. He felt a bit awkward and ashamed explaining it. Knowing how stupid it was and knowing how it could’ve been easily avoided if he had been more careful, as much other things in his young life. He tried to figure out a way that would make it seem less stupid than it actually was, but there was no way around it. ”Basically I robbed the wrong gang by accident and they made a mess of Thomas’s house while following me. So now I’m here to repay the debt,” he then explained with a sheepish smile. He glanced back at the young man with a smirk and shrugged. ”I’m not the brightest,” he added.

In some ways he saw people as a puzzle. One he wanted to solve because he wanted to understand them. Their sorrow but also their joy. He had become quite good at finding out all of the above but still in a way it was subtle enough so he did not offend them. He had a good notion of when he had to keep his mouth shut too. He had to slightly reform his judgement on the boy; he could now understand why the young man had chosen to take a seat at the bar instead of in front of someone else. He seemed very self-conscious about his appearance. He wished he could tell him that he had absolutely no reason to, that he was handsome and attractive just the way he was, but he decided that it would be a bad call, considering his earlier response on a compliment.

It would not keep him from having a friendly conversation with him though. He decided to poor some rum for himself. It was almost time to close down the bar and he deserved to unwind after a long day too. He then strategically got the other man to talk. He had learned that people appreciated it when they could tell a story to someone who actually listened. And he did. With great interest. Not because he was faking it, no, it was genuine. ”Oh, don’t you say that! We all have different talents”, He responded. ”Tommy gets in trouble all the time too, doesn’t he? It has nothing to do with being clever, it was just bad luck”, He added. He had said so himself, it had been an accident. ”There’s worse ways of punishment”, He then laughed amused. He’d take this place over a prison cell any day.

Kaleb had never been any good with compliments. He was a mess, a dumbass and he had peace with it. If someone said something positive about him, he’d immediately assumed that they either needed something from him or that they were teasing him indirectly. He was glad that he could ignore it and move on from the weird compliment. He’d rather drink his rum in peace, but it seemed like the bartender had other plans. Maybe it was because he had recognized him or maybe because it was near closing time, but for some reason he felt the need to talk to Kaleb. Kaleb could give him the cold shoulder and just ignore him, but that would be rather awkward when Kaleb were to come back to him to collect the money. So, he’d decided to play along and have a friendly conversation with him. The question was one to be expected. Yet he didn’t have an answer ready. As usual, Kaleb didn’t think of the consequences and didn’t think longer about his decision than a second. He tried to think of a way to explain the situation without sounding stupid as fuck but found that soon impossible. He eventually sighed and just explained the situation as it was.

The young man listened to him. Perhaps he had been so bored that any story could entertain him. Kaleb felt at least a bit more comfortable now that they were talking about his stupid actions rather than about his appearance. ”Oh, don’t you say that! We all have different talents”, the bartender responded. Kaleb frowned at those words but kept the grin around his lips. ”I suppose I still have to find my talent then,” he said with a wink. Even if he had to think of something, he was good at it the only thing he could think of was being stubborn. Maybe being stubborn was just his only talent. That and getting into trouble. ”Tommy gets in trouble all the time too, doesn’t he? It has nothing to do with being clever, it was just bad luck”, the man continued. Kaleb chuckled softly. It seemed as if he tried to make Kaleb feel better, but Kaleb shook his head. ”If you knew me you’d be agreeing with me,” Kaleb responded with a smirk before taking another sip of the rum. It seemed his innocent words could’ve convinced the young man that it al really had been just an accident – and it had, but those kind of ‘accidents’ happened all the time. Kaleb should’ve known how to avoid them by now. ”There’s worse ways of punishment”, the man then said amused. Kaleb laughed softly and shrugged. ”I guess that’s true. Maybe I should be glad that I ended up here and not in prison,” he muttered. He knew many people would rather have a job than be a thief on the streets. Perhaps he should try to show a bit more gratitude. He looked back at the young man. ”My name is Kaleb,” he introduced himself and held up his hand. They might as well get know each other better as they were sure to run into together more often as they both worked here.

The young man seemed to be warming up to his company. He had at least managed to get him talking. Sharing stories was an important first step in building some sort of friendship. Even if it only lasted for a couple of hours he wanted to keep him entertained for a while, after what had probably been a long day for him. The way he was ridiculing himself told him he did not have much self-esteem. He knew exactly what it felt like to look into a mirror and pick apart every flaw until there was nothing left but a miserable mess. So naturally he tried to lift his spirits a bit.

”For some it takes a while longer”, He encouraged the other. He had experienced it himself too. It was only when he had fully accepted himself he had found his passion. Then he had learned he was great at entertaining people. At making them feel comfortable around him. He still used that ‘talent’ to this day in his job. He was blessed to have been able to do what he loved doing for a living. ”I will have to get to know you better then”, He smirked at his comment. He wouldn’t mind. At all, honestly. So far the young man was pleasant company.

The conversation had started flowing and he couldn’t be happier. He took another sip from his drink as the other was speaking. ”Yeah, it’s not that bad eh? There’s rum and all that” He grinned at him. As much as he wanted. Or well, as much as he could hold, and would be able to pay for. ”Milo”, He then introduced himself, accepting the extended hand as he shook it softly. He leaned on the bar for a bit as he glanced at the last few patrons making their way to the exit. He bid them all a good night before they left. ”So, do you actually have any affiliation with horses?” He then asked curiously. Perhaps that was the punishment side of it. Maybe Kaleb here was terrified of horses. Imagine.

The conversation seemed to go a bit better now that the man hadn’t complimented again, but it still felt a bit odd to talk to someone who tried to cheer him up. It didn’t happen often, and Kaleb knew that the man would withdraw his words if he knew him longer than just a few minutes. That’s why he kept quiet when the man told him that it’d just take some time for him to find his talent. Kaleb figured he’d already found his talent, but that it was rather a curse than a talent. In any case, he was delighted that the bartender wanted to cheer him up, even though it made him feel a bit uncomfortable.
”I will have to get to know you better then”, the man smirked. Kaleb chuckled softly and nodded. ”Oh I’m sure you will,” he answered with a grin. If it wasn’t for him coming here more often then it could also be Tommy who would complain about him not doing his job right. His bad reputation was sure to be known and to be spread. He could try to hold to the guidelines and be a good boy, but wasn’t that a tat too boring? ”I look forward to getting to know you better as well,” Kaleb added with a friendlier grin. It wasn’t often that someone would be so friendly toward him, and it wouldn’t surprise him if that were to change if the man would know more about Kaleb, but for now he felt genuine excited to maybe make a new friendship.

Only the last words were words Kaleb could agree with. There were worst punishments than working for a friend. ”Yeah, it’s not that bad eh? There’s rum and all that” the man grinned. Kaleb nodded and smirked. ”Exactly. Free booze is always a win,” he responded, although he wondered if the drinks were really free. He doubt it. It’d be bad for business if they were. Then it would be certain that Kaleb would spend most of his time in the bar instead of doing his job.
”Milo”, the man introduced himself after Kaleb had done the same. They shook hands. Kaleb nodded and took a sip from the rum after letting go of his hand. He followed the man’s gaze to the last few leaving the bar. He softly sighed. Now they were alone. Did that mean they had to wrap up as well? And that Kaleb had to do his job? He really didn’t want to, not yet. He was finally enjoying himself. ”So, do you actually have any affiliation with horses?” Kaleb looked back at Milo. He shook his head. ”Nope. Nothing. Never even ridden one,” he answered with a slight grins. Maybe he had ridden a horse when he still lived at home, as his family was pretty wealthy and would most likely prefer their son riding on a horse than to walk on the streets among the poor. Pretty ironic. ”And you? Is that the reason you decided to work here?” he asked with a slight grin. He couldn’t understand why anyone would work out of free work, but it’d make sense if he enjoyed the sight of the horses. Then again, if he did enjoy being with the horses shouldn’t his job be stable boy instead of bartending? ”Or do you prefer people over horses?” Kaleb therefore added. He felt way more comfortable now he was the one nagging into someone else’s life.

And there it was. The promise of a good time, for as long as it would last. The other expressed his wish to get to know him better too. He couldn’t help but softly smile at those words. It caused a warm sensation to spread through his chest. The prospect of spending time with someone as interesting as the man sitting at his bar made his skin tingle in anticipation. As if the cue was given the last patrons decided to leave, probably heading to bed next door. He was tired too, but not so much he wanted to leave just yet.

”Free booze?” He echoed with an amused tone in his voice. ”I mean, one night won’t hurt. We had decent turn-over tonight”, He then shrugged. To emphasize, he emptied his glass and waved at Kaleb to do the same, before he refilled both glasses. He then found out the other had no interest in the horses. A pity. He did not share Thomas’ passion for them, but he could appreciate being around them. The way Kaleb worded his next question made him chuckle softly, the sound vibrating in his chest. ”I’d always choose men over horses when it comes to riding”, He replied, unapologetically straightforward, placing his hand on his chin to rub his lower lip in an effort to hide his smirk. ”The reason why I work here is because I worked as a bartender for years. I figured I could as well put my experience to use and help out Tommy until he finds suitable employees”, He then answered his question casually. As if he had not just made a comment about.. Yeah.

Temptation is my medication
notes: geschreven via mobiel, excuses voor typefouten (a) | @Milo
The moment Kaleb had walked into the bar, he had the plan to get tipsy in silence and then quickly handle the collecting of the money before dragging himself to another bar to finish off. This was supposed to be merely a pit stop. A short break of the hectic new job he got and the beginning of a relaxed evening he had earned himself. Knowing him the evening would most likely end with him in the gutter with a few new bruices gifted to his face, but it'd be worth it. The bartender had other plans and despite Kaleb's urge to still get the silence he came for, he had eventually broken through Kaleb's doubts and now they were intertwined in a friendly conversation. The last visitors left the bar, leaving the two of them alone. Kaleb wondered if that'd meant that he had to get back to work, but Milo continued the conversation as nothing had changed, so Kaleb did the same. If it were up to him he'd get drunk right here and now. It would safe him a trip to another bar and alot of money he didn't have.

Partly joking he agreed that free booze was not the worst punishment. He didn't expect the bartender to really give him the drinks for free, but it was worth a shot, right? ”Free booze?” Milo repeated. Kaleb nodded with the smirk still on his face. It might've been rude to assume, but Kaleb didn't care. Besides, Milo seemed rather amused instead of offended. ”I mean, one night won’t hurt. We had decent turn-over tonight”, the man then gave in with a shrug. For a second Kaleb looked surprised at him, baffled that it actually worked. He didn't even have to beg or throw his best puppy eyes at the man. A smirk appeared on his face as Milo emptied his glass and gestured Kaleb to do the same. Obedient he shot the last bit of the liquor and put the glass back on the bar to get refilled. The burning sensation in his throat was one to last and his shook his head a bit while squeezing his eyes. It was a familiar feeling and yet it surprised him every time. With a smirk he looked at he refilled glass. He lifted it and nodded. "Thank you kind man," he said with a wink before taking yet another sip. The alcohol didn't burn as much as the shot had made it easier to drink. It wouldn't take long for the alcohol to do it's work and for him to get a bit dazed. He was way too stubborn to stop himself from drinking or even to know his limit. It was doomed to go wrong, or exactly right.

The topic changed to the horses. It was a question to be expected, but the answer would be rather boring. Kaleb didn't find any interest in the animal. He only found them annoying when people from high ends would ride around on them, ignoring everyone in their path and just assume everyone would make way for them. Their arrogance annoyed him and caused him already to have cut multiple belts of saddles so their riders would fall of face first in the dirt. It was always satisfying to see, though he couldn't enjoy the sight for long as they'd go after him without a doubt. As his answer wasn't anything interesting, and as it sparked curiosity towards Milo, he returned the question to him, wondering if that was the reason for him to work here. Milo chuckled at his words. Kaleb tilted his head while staring at him with a questioning look in his eye. What was funny? ”I’d always choose men over horses when it comes to riding”, Milo said. "Huh?" was Kaleb's response. The poor boy had never paid much attention to sex or anything in that trance as he had simply never felt the need or urge to. He was way too busy with his own problems and money issues to think about such vile things. A few seconds of silence continued. Kaleb noticed how Milo tried to withhold himself from smirking, which made Kaleb think he was either making fun of him or making a bad joke that he didn't get. Only after those few seconds Kaleb realized what Milo meant with his words. His face flushed red as the realization settled in and he immediately averted his gaze to his glass to avoid eye contact. Desperately he tried to think of something clever to say to atleast redeem a bit of his pride. He'd almost felt embarrassed that he hadn't understand the joke right away. Eventually he cleared his throat and finally dared to look Milo back into the eyes. "Well, I'm sure I'm better at riding men than I'm at riding horses," he responded with a grin, although you could notice the nervousness in his eye. It was a clear bluff, but he wouldn't back down that easily. He wouldn't let himself get nervous, astounded or shocked by the conversation topic. He had to show he could handle it. Plus he was way too stubborn to admit he hadn't any experience, even though his reaction should be a clear answer to that. ”The reason why I work here is because I worked as a bartender for years. I figured I could as well put my experience to use and help out Tommy until he finds suitable employees”, Milo then answered more seriously. Kaleb felt relieved that the man atleast still answered the question and that they didn't have to get stuck at his incredible awkward moment. The blushes were luckily already fading. "I see, Tommy is probably very happy with your help," he said. A slight smile creeped on his face. "At least, if your as friendly to all your customers as you are to me," he added. He knew that being friendly and social was a key of being a good bartender. It would help with getting more orders and regular customers. Most bartenders were good at socializing, but not everyone had the patience to listen to the sob stories of their customers or to react al the same to everyone. He'd admired that Milo still put in the effort to have a conversation with him even though it was the end of the day. Kaleb would almost feel guilty if it wasn't Milo who had started the conversation in the first place.

The past few days had been great for business. He knew Thomas wanted to invest all profits directly into the renovations of the racetrack. But a few drinks wouldn’t hurt, right? He wasn’t planning on stealing from his brother though. He’d neatly tell him exactly how glasses (bottles?) he had emptied in his absence. Was the man to decide he needed to pay them, then he would do so without complaining. For now he relished the idea of the booze being actually for free. It tasted a bit sweeter that way, once he had adjusted to the burning sensation of the liquor in his throat and the aftertaste in his mouth.

”My pleasure, good sir”, He joked right back, lifting his glass in some kind of toast before he sipped from it. The next comment he made was one that most would reconsider on second thought. But he didn’t think twice about it. Even if he did he would decide to say it anyway. He was not ashamed of who he was. Not anymore. It made the boy feel uncomfortable. Seemingly not in the way that he was uncomfortable because he made a sexual comment about men in particular though. It felt like the sexual nature of the remark in general had made him freak out a bit. He was blushing. Oh, how endearing.

And then he gave the most delightful response. He could feel the corners of his mouth tremble as they turned into a smile. ”Is that so?” He said with a husky, heavier timbre in his voice. It implied much, just about enough, before it disappeared again. He answered his question as if nothing was amiss. The other seemed glad to be able to switch the subject again. ”I am friendly with everyone, of course. It’s part of the job”, He shrugged. The most innocent of smile was then flashed his way. ”Not everyone gets my undivided attention though”, He added. ”Sometimes I miss being a simple bartender”, He then sighed, casually switching the subject again. He loved his new job, but his old one definitely had allowed him to get wasted more often than his current.

For moment it had seemed like the conversation was going fluently. The awkward moment had been averted and they were now simply talking about Kaleb’s dumb behavior and their differing love for horses. Apparently, Kaleb had made it easy for Milo to strike a sexual comment about it, which caught Kaleb totally off guard. It wasn’t like he had never talked or thought about sex. He had enough sexual frustrated young boys as friends to know what they were thinking and to know what the comment meant. He simply didn’t expect such a comment to be thrown innocently into a normal conversation. He couldn’t help but blush and avert his gaze to keep himself together. He didn’t want to show how shocked or surprised he was by the comment either. So, he quickly restored himself and threw a comment back. It was a total bluff. He bluffed a lot, but his poker face was usually lacking – this time was no difference. Thank god the crimson red at least faded from his cheeks. Milo only seemed to enjoy Kaleb’s response. An amusing smile appeared on his face. ”Is that so?” Kaleb stared at him and nodded. ”Yes,” he answered stubbornly, before taking another big gulp of the rum. He was glad when Milo answered the question and that they could return to their previous subject.

”I am friendly with everyone, of course. It’s part of the job”, Milo answered. Kaleb nodded. It was to be expected, but he also knew that it could be tough at times to always be friendly. He frowned a bit when Milo smiled at him innocently. As if another comment was coming his way. ”Not everyone gets my undivided attention though”, Milo added. Something a bit more innocent. Kaleb smirked a bit. ”In that case, I feel honored,” he responded with a smirk and lifted his glass before taking another sip. It wouldn’t take long for him to get tipsy. Another glass and his cheeks would turn red from the alcohol. ”Sometimes I miss being a simple bartender”, Milo then sighed. Kaleb raised a brow and sat back. He stared at the man. ”Then why’d you quit?” he asked. From what he had seen, Milo seemed pretty good at his job. It would seem unlikely for him to get fired the last time he was working as a bartender. It also seemed as if Milo was indicating that he had another job in between, but Kaleb would wait with asking that question. Maybe he’d find out after Milo’s answer.

With some effort he stopped himself from chuckling in amusement once more. The younger man was adorable. His reactions were so much better than those of the people that came into the brothel looking for distraction. His clients had come with a clear goal and thus had certain expectations. They were prepared. Kaleb was not. It made his response more genuine. He wondered how far he could push him. He didn’t want to exaggerate too much though. He was quite certain it would make him leave. It was a delicate balance but he was experienced enough to know when to stop for a while.

Hence why he returned to normal conversation. He subtly leaned closer to him, silently cursing the bar in between them. How much more he could provoke with a simple touch.. He kept it to comments for now. He took a sip from the rum as the other lifted his glass in a toast. ”I didn’t quit”, He answered while shaking his head. ”I got promoted”, He then grinned. It sure was a promotion, at least in his opinion. ”I worked in Wineport for a while, in one of Lord Loran’s brothels. Then I got moved to the House of Sunsets in the Golden Hills”, He explained. He kept a close watch for his reaction to the name, if he spotted a glimpse of recognition or not. The brothel was well-known enough throughout these regions for the fact that it was an all-male establishment. Perhaps he could figure out by himself what that ‘promotion’ had been.

He didn’t know why Milo would say the things he had said. It was like he enjoyed teasing Kaleb and Kaleb was somewhat sure that that was the exact reason why continued. Even though he would try to, he wouldn’t be able to hide his reactions. His initial shock to the words, the realization of what he meant with the words and the embarrassment that would follow, to quickly follow up with the blushes on his cheeks. He knew his responses were the main cause for Milo to continue. So, Kaleb tried his best to act braver than he actually was. He returned the comments, acting as if he knew it all, although his initial responses would already have given the truth. Still, he wouldn’t back down. He wouldn’t be scared away by a man who was merely a few years older than him. Their life experiences couldn’t be that different, right? Alright it seemed as if Milo had way more experience sexually than Kaleb ever had, but that shouldn’t be a reason for Kaleb to get scared. If anything, he should be motivated to proof Milo wrong. It was probably the stupidest thing he could do as Milo wouldn’t be one to stop, but Kaleb wouldn’t be Kaleb if he was uncapable of thinking about the consequences.

Luckily, the conversation returned to ‘normal’ as they talked about Milo’s job. The man said he had missed being a bartender, which made Kaleb question why he had quit in the first place. Kaleb had only experienced Milo as a bartender for some minutes, but he seemed really good at his job. He couldn’t imagine that he had been fired from his last job. ”I didn’t quit”, Milo answered. Kaleb frowned. He tilted his head to the side, wondering what could’ve happened. He stayed quiet as he expected the answer to follow. Milo shook his head. ”I got promoted”, the man clarified. ”Oh,” Kaleb responded. He hadn’t even thought about that option yet. It was surely possible, especially as Milo seemed a perfect bartender. Yet it didn’t explain why the man would miss being a bartender if he got promoted. Kaleb therefore couldn’t help but stare at Milo with a questioning look. ”I worked in Wineport for a while, in one of Lord Loran’s brothels. Then I got moved to the House of Sunsets in the Golden Hills”, Milo then explained. ”Oh,” Kaleb responded again, this time surprised. He stared slightly shocked at the man. He surely hadn’t expected that answer. He wasn’t familiar with the House of Sunsets, but he had heard enough of it to knew what it was. With those thoughts he realized what Milo’s promotion might’ve been. The crimson flush returned to his face on the moment of realization. Again, he averted his gaze, not wanting Milo to see the slight hint of panic in his eye. Was it even fair to take that conclusion? The man seemed fairly familiar with sexual interactions, but that shouldn’t be reason enough to assume he was an escort. Or was it? Kaleb didn’t know. It wasn’t like he had met one before. Curiosity conquered the embarrassment and he slowly looked back at Milo. ”What were you promoted to?” he asked softly. He tried to act secure and certain, but he was merely able to keep his voice from trembling.

One of his many talents was to lead a conversation. It was easy enough for him to ask the right question at the right timing, talk about himself just enough to keep the other’s attention, direct the subjects in ways that kept the atmosphere balanced on the thin line of enjoyable and flirty. He had talked to so many people before that it almost came as second nature to him now. It was a form of manipulating, but one he had adapted without feeling any guilt because in the end he hoped to keep his partner or partners entertained and happy. Which was why he had let the previous topic go, granting Kaleb the last word.

It seemed like the mention of the House of Sunsets had made him uncomfortable again. It made him believe stronger in his theory that the boy had not much experience when it came to sexual stuff. Not that it mattered. He had started from zero one day as well. After a few moments Kaleb had pulled himself back together, his curiosity conquering his awkwardness. He asked what he got promoted to. ”I’m a male escort”, He honestly replied, without even blinking. He was not ashamed of it, he would never be. However he did know some people were just not open-minded enough to accept him for who he was. ”To me it’s a job like any other. But I do understand others might find it repulsive”, He shrugged. He took another sip of his drink. He didn’t care for judgement. If Kaleb wanted to drink the rest of his rum and walk out, then he was very welcome to do so.

The ease and comfort only lasted for a few minutes. A few minutes where the conversation returned back to ‘normal’ and where his heart stopped pounding so incredible fast. He had recovered from the embarrassment and was on his way to be his edgy self again, when Milo dropped another bomb. Despite never ever entering the brothel, Kaleb knew exactly about what kind of establishment Milo was talking. The brothel was widely known and had also reached Kaleb’s ears by some friends who liked to joke about it. Some jokes were harsh, others suggested some sexual tendencies. In any case it was enough for Kaleb to figure out what kind of brothel the House of Sunsets was and knew what he could expect if he were to walk in. Milo said he had been promoted, but promoted to what? Kaleb could easily conclude to what. He wasn’t that dumb. Yet still he felt the need for confirmation. He wanted to know if his thoughts were right or if the man was teasing him yet again. He didn’t want to embarrass himself anymore than was needed.

His cheeks had turned red once again. And again, he had also averted his gaze again. He didn’t want to seem weak and he hated that he couldn’t fake the confidence he wished he felt. Still, stubborn as always, he returned his gaze to Milo. ”I’m a male escort”, the man answered. For a split-second Kaleb’s eye widened before nodding and trying to recover himself. It was the answer he had expected and yet it still came as a surprise. He immediately felt curiosity burn and wanted to ask a million of questions but felt still incredible embarrassed to even think about asking them. ”To me it’s a job like any other. But I do understand others might find it repulsive”, Milo continued while shrugging. The way he explained it, so calmly, as if it didn’t matter to him, made it easier for Kaleb to relax as well. Kaleb didn’t mind the occupation of Milo at all. As long as he was happy right? Kaleb smirked a bit. ”Well, most people think being a thief is repulsive as well – which it probably is, so I’m not one to talk,” Kaleb responded with a smirk. The nervousness was still there, but he felt way more relaxed. He felt at ease in Milo’s presence. He didn’t really know why. Maybe it was the alcohol. With those thoughts he shot the last bit of his rum and held up the glass for a refill.

For the longest time he had been ashamed for who he was. Those days were in his past. Of course there were still struggles when it came to his identity. But he was done hiding. He was done trying to pretend they were not there. He dealt with it at the appropriate times and tried to enjoy life to the fullest in between. He loved his job, he truly did, and he was not afraid to admit it. The judgement was nothing new, and he knew he could take it. His answer seemed to surprise Kaleb, and at the same time it didn’t. He had probably guessed already. He continued to explain that he thought of it as a job like any other.

That seemed to make Kaleb feel more comfortable. It was the truth though. He was a bartender, and he was an escort. It gave him satisfaction and it made him happy. So why not? The boy went on to share his opinion. ”Honestly Kaleb, people will always have opinions”, He said in an amused tone. He watched how the other emptied his glass and asked for a refill. He pulled out the bottle and filled it half, after which he added some to his own glass too. ”I have better things to do than to listen to them”, He said while he was busy with the bottle. Once he put it down, he grabbed his glass. ”Life is a party, you just have to bring the booze eh?” He grinned. He took a drink from the liquid to prove his point. A party indeed. "So, how does it feel then? Going legit? With this new job", He asked him. He admired Thomas for giving Kaleb the opportunity to get out of those criminal circuits.

Even though he could probably guess the answer he still asked the question. His cheeks had turned crimson red again and again he felt the tendency to avert his gaze. But he was stubborn. His stubbornness would often lead him into trouble, but this time it helped him to keep his eye on Milo as he asked the question. He felt nervous for the answer. He expected to get more embarrassed and uncomfortable once the confirmation was given, but once Milo actually answered the question he felt weirdly at ease. It didn’t make him feel uncomfortable nor embarrassed. Of course, he felt a bit nervous as he didn’t know what to expect, yet the calm manner Milo had answered his question made it easier for him to relax. With Milo’s words he also realized that he wasn’t one to judge. Kaleb had a way of living that was frowned upon as well and it was still rough finding people who would accept him despite his wrong habits. It was a different issue and barely worth to compare, but it made him realize that Milo might know what it felt like to feel alone. He wouldn’t even think of asking it or wondering about it. Those feelings would be hidden deep within to never be released to the surface.

Maybe it was to clear the last tension he felt or maybe it was to make Milo feel at ease, but he found it worthy to share his opinion. ”Honestly Kaleb, people will always have opinions”, Milo responded. Kaleb nodded. ”That’s true. You can never do everything right,” he agreed before emptying the glass. Maybe that was the reason why he had given up trying to do what is right. It was already impossible to please his father, to achieve the standards he had set for him, so it was easier to just not try at all. It was an idea worthy to explore, but Kaleb was way too interested in the alcohol to continue those thoughts. With a smirk he held up the glass for Milo. He nodded a thanks when the glass got refilled. Kaleb took another generous sip. He was already getting tipsy which was noticeable by his loose behavior. ”I have better things to do than to listen to them”, Milo added to his words. Kaleb nodded again. It was clear he agreed as he ran away from any authority that he had to listen to, till now. ”Life is a party, you just have to bring the booze eh?” Milo said, again speaking Kakeb’s language. ”Exactly. Booz makes everything better,” he agreed with a grin before taking another sip. The burning sensation of the alcohol had faded some time ago, which made it easier for him to gulp the liquor down. "So, how does it feel then? Going legit? With this new job", Milo then asked. Kaleb frowned a bit at the question. He hadn’t expected to return to the subject of his job and to be frank it killed his mood a bit. With a deep sigh he laid his head on the wood of the bar. ”I hate it,” he murmured. He closed his eyes for a few seconds, enjoying the cool sensation against the side of his head, before looking back up to Milo. ”I mean it keeps me off the streets,” he continued, but still without a grin. ”Which sucks,” he added. He wrapped his fingers around his glass and looked at, thinking about all the things he could’ve done if he hadn’t spent his whole day in this boring place. ”I miss the thrill of the streets, the danger and the adventure,” he explained. His lower lip trembled a bit as he pouted. He looked back at Milo. ”You know what I mean?” he asked, wondering if Milo had the same need of adventure or if he simply enjoyed the ‘thrill’ of his current bartend job.

It had taken some time but now he could actually feel confident in saying he didn’t give a fuck about the opinion of those that didn’t matter to him. He valued the feedback of Tommy and Grace, for example, but he had stopped trying to fit in. There were more important matters to spend his energy on. Like cheering up the lad sitting at his bar and showing him how great life could be when he stopped caring too. At least he agreed that booze made everything better. ”Cheers to that”, He grinned, raising his glass and drinking from it after.

The question he posed obviously wasn’t received well. He extended his hand and patted the boy on his hair. ”There there”, He hummed. He noticed how soft his hair was. He couldn’t help but to fluff it for a second before he pulled his hand back and leaned his elbows on the bar. A small grin toyed around his lips at his words. ”There are other types of adventure”, He winked at him. He then reached beneath the bar to grab another bottle. ”Come on, I know a fun game to play”, He smiled at the other. He gestured him to follow as he walked towards the back, where the stairs would take them to his temporary room above the bar.
